at least once a month I stop bye Blue Smoke for 1 1/2 racks of their Texas Style Beef Ribs , I call for pick-up when I leave the gym on my walk home that gives me a reason to drin...

Worst

I was expecting a lot after all the hype and Best-Ofs and Critic's Picks, but was severely disappointed. My pulled pork lacked any discernible flavor and necessitated a serious do...

not bad 8/23/2002

The onion rings, mac & cheese, the mephis styled ribs and banana cream pie were very good. The deviled eggs were good but for $6 you think they could give you more than just 2 eggs sliced in half - what did they mix with the egg yolks, truffles? I was surprised that it wasn't as loud as I was expecting - hopefully the hipster wannabe have moved on. I'll go back again.... Pros: good comfort food, nice space Cons: some items overpriced more

Great place to take kids/parents 8/20/2002

We reserved for a Saturday night and the place was packed, and we didn't get seated right away, which was fine, since the service was friendly and real fast. I'm not a BBQ specialist, but I everything I ordered was delicious except for the baked beans (they tasted like celery). I loved the beef brisket, mac n cheese, and key lime pie. This is a no-attitude, casual place that's great to take parents or children. I have recommended this place to friends and will definitely go back more than once. Pros: inexpensive, casual Cons: crowded more

27th street never smelled better 8/19/2002

great service from the front door all the way in and back out again!! Texas ribs dry rubbed!!! Best root beer in town... very cool to see dressed up men and women licking their fingers and gnawing on bones. Great desserts also,I've had everyone of them. Jukebox could use some blues and soul!! Pros: root beer, beer list, food more

Worst BBQ I've ever had 8/18/2002

I was shocked. A friend and I, who between us have eaten at some of the best BBQ places in the country -- Memphis, Dallas, the Carolinas, St. Louis, etc., etc., have never had worse food. The pulled pork was mushy and absolutely tasteless. The smoked chicken was rubbery and had some flavor. The ribs were bad -- the St. Louis and Babybacks were exactly the same in flavor and appearance -- pink, with a smoke flavor that was actually overdone, dry/rubbery, sprinkled with a BBQ sauce that was bland and disappointingly mild. The fry bread was good, and the Key Lime pie was good, but we could not have been more disappointed with the food. Virgil's (which is good, not exceptional) has better ribs, as does Brother Jimmy's. For the best BBQ in NYC, you have to go to Stick to Your Ribs in Queens. Pros: Devilled Eggs, Drinks Cons: BBQ stinks more

Heart Attack Sandwich 8/11/2002

This place had great food! I liked the relaxed atmosphere. The staff was not that knowledgeable about all the food, but I guess that's becuase it is new. They need to teach the waitstaff how to pour a beer as well. It should not have half foam half beer. Back to Business the food was good. more

Good Food Great Service ! 7/24/2002

I visited Blue Smoke for lunch with a few co-workers. Collectively, we had the organic chicken, baby-back ribs, beef brisket, cornbread and macaroni and cheese. This is not for people looking for down home, sauce all over the place barbeque. The food was excellent in a casually elegant way. The baby back ribs were tender, with a smoky flavor and the cornbread was warm, soft and delicious. The lemonade was very tart, however my coworkers ordered the root beer that was served in a frosted glass and they loved it. Definately a great spot for a casual lunch or dinner. Oh one more thing, our service was great. When our server learned that this was our first time there, they gave us 2 peach plum cobblers with ice cream on top on the house! Pros: Great Service, Good Food, Casual atmosphere more

smoky ribs 7/24/2002

I ordered the rib sampler, and while all three varieties were smoky and tasty, none of them compared to the fall off the bone, super juicy, smothered in sauce, baby backs and beef ribs I've had in Atlanta, Harlem (Sylvia's), and various backwoods New England bbq shacks. The ribs are somewhat dry and clean, and perhaps appropriate for upscaled ribs, but personally I prefer a more down and dirty rib experience, that I doubt can be had in the Flat Iron district. more

  • Danny Meyer's sprawling, wood-trimmed barbecue joint, with its oversized booths, showpiece bar and late-night jazz club in the basement, is a hot spot for casual work lunches and fun nights on the town. Crowds pour in, and service is friendly and knowledgeable. The moderately priced menu features upscale comfort food, but only enough to showcase the high-quality ingredients and interesting pairings. The food is fun and unfussy, as creamy deviled eggs and hush puppies with jalapeno-marmalade prove. Pulled pork, though nothing like Carolina's versions, is chunky, chewy, with just enough smoke, while spice-rubbed and sauce-slathered ribs (best enjoyed as a sampler) feature fat-streaked, mostly tender pork and beef.
