I am a loyal customer of Alberto Amore of Astor Place Hair. As you may know, Astor Place is closing at the end of November due to the impact of COVID-19. I set up a GoFundMe for...

Worst

After I finished work, say around 830 or so I decided I wanted to cut off this annoying mop that I have been experimenting growing. I simply dont have the patience to keep growin...

They've earned another repeat customer! 2/11/2005

I went for the first time today after hearing about it through the NYU grapevine and reviews by this site and the Village Voice. I am definitely going back! My hairstylist, Regina, knew exactly what I wanted when I told her how long my hair was before and how I wanted it now. The facial wax lady also did a very good job and my face did not swell up at all like it usually does. I do admit that the ambience has some shock value - it's in the basement beneath Coldstone Creamery - and chock full of barbers cutting hair. But that's one of the things I really liked about it, it had a lot of personality and people with a lot of experience cutting hair...not hacks as some dissenters said here. I'm def. going back to Regina for future haircuts! more

Alberto and Astor Forever 1/13/2005

Since 1989, Astor and Alberto have been there for me with fabulous hair cuts and an engaging atmosphere. Sure, the price has gone up, but it remains an incredible value!! Alberto's cut through marriage, kids & career; he's always been there for me and has always kept my hair well groomed and current. He's even humored my attempts at change. But I keep coming back because he knows what to do with my hair style as it gets increasingly gray. If you haven't tried them; you haven't really lived in New York! Pros: Great value, Call ahead, Nice people Cons: , Closed upstairs more

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR 12/7/2004

I was sick of paying $35 for a men's haircut at a established NYC salon so I figured I'd give this place a shot. If you want a fancy place, this is NOT the place for you. In all honesty, I walked in and almost walked out but decided I had nothing to lose so I gave it a shot. In the end, I got a decent haircut for a very cheap price. Only thing that really bothered me was at the end of the haircut I gave the sylist a $2 tip and he looked at me like I had 2 heads. What does he expect on a $13 haircut??? Pros: Cheap, Fast Cons: , Rude more

Jose is the best! 11/26/2004

Jose has been cutting my hair since I moved to the city... a long time ago. He has cut my hair from crew cut (then) to shoulder length (now) and everything in between. Jose has rescued me from bothched home cuts and one highlight horror I feared could never be fixed. Now I trust only him with my color and my cut. When he tells me he thinks something won't work or isn't right for me I have the goods sense to listen. I highly recommend him. more

Jose 11/21/2004

He has been coloring my hair for 9 years, and I won't go to anyone else. He has also cut and styled my hair. He does a great job! He has a very nice personality, is creative and extremely talented in his techniques. I love Astor Place, they have GREAT prices compared with other hair salons in the city!!!!! more

Astor..no pressure 9/30/2004

I've been going to Astor Place for 9 yrs now after just walking in the first day looking for someone to do my hair. Met Josephine who is just an awesome hairstylist with a great personality. We've become great friends over the years. For those of you who've had bad experience...all I can say is.....what works for me, might not work for you, but because you've had a bad experience with one hair stylist, that doesn't mean that ALL the stylist or the place is bad. I truly love the atmosphere of ASTOR PLACE. Great prices. more

Jose at Astor Place 5/3/2004

Great hairdresser, great colorist, a real asset at Astor Place Hairstylists. Very clean. Pros: great color, great haircut, nice person more

What an experience! 3/31/2004

My sister and I stopped in so she could get her hair cut. We ended up in the basement - it was so much fun! I have never seen such a collection of stylists - and while my sister's stylist was good...a nearby stylist Chris was a real highlight! He was friendly and incredibly attractive - I would go back just to see him, and maybe he could cut my hair, too! Pros: three levels!, Chris, culturally diverse more

The Greatest... 7/21/2003

To the people who hated this place, I understand; it's not for everyone. Sounds like you'd be happier going to Supercuts. The people at Astor have their own styles and way of doing things. Any good relationship takes time. If you think you can walk into any place, cheap or expensive, and be totally happy with the first person you tried, you're delusional. I had a to try a few different barbers, and rely on word of mouth, but once I found him, I stuck with him for 16 years+. I've moved a bit during that time, but whenever I was in NY, I would go back and be treated great, while wishing I could get a haircut just a good in my new home. Now I'm back in NY for good, and back to Astor, using the best barber in NYC...Jay. His brother Dr. Mike is really good too. more

The worst "cut" I've ever had 7/5/2003

I say "cut" because this guy basically applied buzzer to head. I asked him for "not too short", but judging by the results, "short" must be when they shave off the top layer of your scalp. And when I tried to change what he was doing partway through he just said, "no, that is not this style" and kept mowing the lawn. I've had a lot of little cheap crappy barber shops before, and this was absolutely the worst I've been too. Pros: I'm still alive Cons: Everything else more

what do you expect? 4/20/2003

I can't imagine anyone being ignorant enough not to comprehend that this establishment is anything other than an hack assemblyline barber shop and, as such, can expect the sort of results that are in accordance with such a setup. The joint is filled with recent arrivals who seemingly attained their "skills" in Red Army military prisons. For many of the patrons of this establishment, this is perfectly fine and, in fact, desirable. For those of you wishing for a more personal experience, you better cough up the bucks and go elsewhere. Pros: cheap, uniform results, fast Cons: see "pros" more

I want my eyebrows & skin back 2/22/2003

I went to Astor for an eyebrow wax, and 24 hours later, my skin is still painful and puffy. She did not follow my directions either and my eyebrows are much too thin now. I went here because of the good Citysearch reviews. I am now seriously questioning the unbiased nature of your reviews. This place was not at all what your site said it was. Who monitors the validity of your reviews. Pros: cheap Cons: cheap, You get what U pay 4 more

Groovy 11/17/2002

My roommate went to Astor and got a cheap haircut, it ended up looking just like Austin Powers, too bad shes a girl and had to grow it out for months before it was fixable. Be careful! more

YOU MUST GO! 9/27/2002

This place was amazing. Don't be fooled by the barber shop feel of this place. They are very friendly, and a wash and cut was only $17! I highly recommend this family owned shop that doesn't even take appointments! Just walk in! I was served right away. I recommend Rosa. Pros: inexpensive, friendly more

Fantastic Value. 9/22/2002

I have been to a variety of chi-chi, high-priced salons in nyc for styling and coloring; none of them compare to this professional, extremely GOOD, and very reasonable salon. I was seen right away WITHOUT an appointment; I was told UP FRONT what the cost would be after an initial survey-- which was well below $100 for coloring/cut -- and above all, I was so happy with the job and still am a month later! I highly recommend Delores...Dont let the initial barber shop atmosphere deceive you; this place is a best kept secret even still... Pros: inexpensive, fast service, talented more

Best of the best! 8/24/2002

At least, from my perspective. Went to get a haircut for the first time in three years - I've been growing mine out from nothing - Jessica helped me through this traumatic process, gave helpful tips, and provided me with a wonderful cut at a low price. Just as good as the salons at a much reduced cost! more

Why pay more for the fancy salons when most of the stylists have no idea what they are doing? Here you can get your hair shampooed and expertly cut/trimmed for less than $40. Great bargain! I was going to Astor (see Dominick) for ten years before I met my husband. Now he and both of our sons have been going for the last 12 years. more

Learn from my mistake 7/8/2002

Let me preface this opinion by saying that I think Astor Place Hair has the potential to be the place where I get my hair cut for the next ten years or more. That said, I suggest you do whatever you can to avoid getting your hair cut by Riccardo. Although hes a nice man and has worked at the shop for 18 years or so, I had a lot of problems with Riccardo (both when I got my hair cut originally and when I went back to have him fix what he screwed-up the first time). In the end, I had my cousin flowbee my hair off and lost six months of trying-to-grow-my-hair-out hair growth. more

Editorial
  • A village legend, this no-frills, family-owned hair salon hasn't spent a penny on advertising--or, apparently, on interior design upgrades--since opening its doors. What Astor does have is a massive reputation for inexpensive, quality service on a walk-in basis. It's also a gigantic melting pot, where teens, celebs, Wall Street execs and soon-to-be punk NYU freshman unite in the common goal of good hair. Eighty-eight stylists specialize in everything from fades, etchings, color (punk to traditional) and curly styles to hair extensions, weaves and braiding.
