Been going to Astor Place for what seems like forever. Five years back I gave Jose a try and what was once just a place to get a quick and cheap haircut, is now a place to get a quick, cheap, and excellent haircut. more

If you want a good haircut, go see Jose at Astor Place. He has been cutting my hair for over 5 years and consistently does an awesome job!!! I am very picky when it comes to my hair and Jose is the only one barber I go to. Besides a great barber, Jose is a kind person who is very enjoyable to talk to. more

Since I moved to NYC a few years ago, Jose is the only person who has cut my hair! He always does an excellent job and truly cares about his work. Plus, he is always friendly and interesting to talk to. He deserves all the superb comments and loyalty expressed in the reviews here. more

Jose has been doing my hair for 17 years. He is the best. You really owe it to yourself to try Jose. Just sit in his chair and tell him what you want and I guarantee you will leve Astor Hair feeling like a million dollars. He works magic with the scissors. No one in the world like Jose! 10/19/2005

For over 10 years, I have been a dedicated customer to Jose and only him. There is no real way for me to verbalise my feelings for this man (trust me I am very critical and very particular when it comes to my appreance) except to say that I have been based in Sao Paulo, London, Bombay, Los Angeles, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Dakar, Karachi, etc. over the years. Nevertheless, Jose is the only person in the world that I will let cut my hair. I know it is only a $15.00 cut (men's cut & wash), but still no matter where I am in the world, every two weeks I am on a plane back to New York for Jose. Jose, has cut, coloured , shaved, you name it he has done it to my head. Jose is the only person in the world, seriously, that can touch my head! more

I've been getting my haircuts exclusively by Jose, for over 15 years. There is truly no reason to go to anyone else. You will not only receive an incredibly perfect haircut but you will also engage in satisfying conversation. Jose will remember you and you will appreciate his sincerity, considering he cuts 1,000's. Astor Place is this best value in NYC. Ask for Jose, he's been cuting my hair for 10 years. Highly skilled in all areas of styling and a good conversationalist. Never had a bad haircut. Jose is the best in the barbershop. Don't forget to tip him well. more

Jose Will Own His Own 8/15/2005

Jose has been my haircutter for about 11 years now. Mind you, he wasn't the first stylist I was pointed to when I first went to Astor, but he's been the one stylist that's always been on point with me. He's dedicated to his craft and very much in tune with his customer's styling requests. Jose doesn't just cut it at the stylists chair, however, he is also quite adept at holding an intelligent and even humorous conversation, if that's what you seek. I see this man opening his own business one day, so you should get to know him now before he moves on to bigger and better times. For my part, thank you for all the cuts, conversation and wisdom, Jose. You are definitely the BEST!! more

Alberto Alberto Alberto - enough said 8/15/2005

Astor Hair is all about choosing the right haircutter. For me, that haircutter has been Alberto. Besides his superb cutting skills, Alberto has always been amazingly consistent. You'll never get any unexpected surprises. Always jolly, and full of pep, Alberto is also Astor's resident Soccer Freak. I learned what Juventus was through him. A NY Classic 8/14/2005

I've been having my hair cut at Astor Place for at least a decade. I've used probably a dozen different stylists ... I like to change from time to time so I'm not dependent on the same one every time. When I get home, my wife always says, "Nice haircut," which I interpret as clearance to use that stylist again. The only time I was less than ecstatic with the result was when I tried to micromanage the stylist, a mistake I've never made again. If you have an idea what you want, you ust tell him/her "not too short," or, "just a trim," or whatever's on your mind, and you'll be a happy camper. Remember to give a nice tip ... anything under $5 is cheaping out. Pros: inexpensive, great ambience, fast in, fast out Cons: crowded weekends more

José has been cutting my hair for the last 10 years impeccably. I am very critical about who touches my hair and he has been doing a terrific job while maintaing with the different hair styles and our own needs as time goes by; he is an Artist in his own right! I also consider José a friend, who will listen to what you have to say, whether is related to getting a haircut or asking for his opinion on work and/or personal related issues; it's like having a Hair Stylist, a Psychiatrist and a Bar Tender all in one! worst ever 5/8/2005

barber spent less than 10 minutes cutting my hair. she barely used her scissors, she just buzzed away with the shaver, and used her scissors only to cut my bangs. she had some problems fading my hair properly and she looked surprised when she shaved off too much and my hair started sticking out (i guess she's not experienced with different hair textures). sideburn lengths were uneven, one was cut lower than my earlobe, and the other side was half an inch higher. after i told her, she tried to fix it, but when i went home and looked in the mirror, my sideburns were still uneven, so i had to cut it again myself. i could have given myself a better haircut, and for free. that's how bad it is. I met José almost 20 years ago, since then the monthly routine never stopped. My last visit included my son (4 years), my daughter (8 years) and my wife. I must agree with all the praise for Jose. He is the best. A great guy and great with hair. He's been cutting mine for more than 15 years, adapting his work as my needs have changed over time. In fact, I lived in Washington for several years, but I never once had my hair cut there! I would always get it done back at Astor in Jose's chair, dropping by during visits back to New York. When you're in this part of the city - This is the place to be! When you've made your way here, JOSE is the stylist to see! He gives you a quality cut with care and courtesy - and when you get to know him, a great conversation as well. AND, if you're looking to color your hair, he is the MASTER COLORIST - blending, beaching, and bolding your way to a new and improved look with an artist's vision and a surgeon's skill.
