Best

I am a loyal customer of Alberto Amore of Astor Place Hair. As you may know, Astor Place is closing at the end of November due to the impact of COVID-19. I set up a GoFundMe for...

Worst

After I finished work, say around 830 or so I decided I wanted to cut off this annoying mop that I have been experimenting growing. I simply dont have the patience to keep growin...

Astor Place is much smaller than it used to be. But still a good NYC deal 1/13/2008

NOTE: The place has no longer has three levels. They are only below ground now. Rents got crazy and now the ground floor has been taken over by a Cold Stone Creamery. How appropriate. It's still good in a pinch at the last minute with no appointment and little cash. Pros: Cheap. Good for a quick wash/trim on your way out somewhere. Cons: Grungy place. Surly staff. Be sure to ask questions and pay attention. more

Great deal on a haircut in NYC, Jose at Astor Place 12/29/2007

I moved to the city this Fall and was a bit nervous about finding a new hair stylist. After seeing the many positive comments on this website about Jose at Astor Hair, I've decided to give the guy a chance! I've been to Jose a few times since I moved in and at all times, he did a superb job! First of all, Jose listens to your requirements and then, takes the time that is needed to do a good job on your hair. Being an accountant, my hairstyle had to be somewhat corporate, yet I didn't want to look like my father. Jose cut my hair exactly how I wanted it to be cut and I was very pleased with the results. Jose is busy most of the time with clients, so I recommend calling ahead to make an appointment. Pros: Great haircut, takes time to do a good job, great deal more

Go to Rita - The Angel of Astor Place! 12/28/2007

If you are considering going to Astor Place, there really is only one person to see there if you want the very best stylist in the New York City. Ask for Rita and you will not only leave there with the best hair cut you?ve ever had - you will also feel like a million bucks because she really makes you feel that way. Going to see Rita, who I have now been going to regularly for the past few months, is more than just getting a great haircut ? It is an experience! She literally gave me an entire new ?look? which has been a real boost for me both socially and professionally. She is also very friendly and personable which is added plus. Whether you need a cut, color or are looking for a complete change of style, Rita will give you whatever it is you are looking for. Rita is not just a stylist, she is an artist. I used to hate getting my hair done, until I met Rita ? now I actually look forward to it knowing I will leave her chair looking and feeling my absolute best. I have already sent a few friends to her, both men and women and now they would never even consider going to anyone else. more

Different but Good 12/28/2007

This place kind of freaked me out because it does not look like anywhere else I have ever been to get my haircut. If you are picturing bright lights, chatty middle aged women, and the standard salon interior - think again. This place is in a basement and there are about 40 stations for people to cut hair. The stations appear to be thrown together by pieces found in rummage sales. That being said - I LOVE my haircut. I got my hair cut by "Steve," although his workstation also said Mustaffah, so I am not sure what his real name is. Anyway, I gave him a little bit of guidance and he took it and improvised and gave me one of the best cuts I've ever had - oh and it was $30!!!! So even though it was a little bit of an odd place, I will DEFINITELY be back. Pros: Great cut! more

You want THE BEST CUT at Astor Hair? ALBERTO! ALBERTO! ALBERTO! 12/19/2007

I had never before met a hair cutter I could truly call an artist. That was, not until I met Alberto and he began to cut my hair. Not only is he possessed of the gift of good conversation and a bursting joie de vivre, he is a true natural at cutting and sculpting a head of hair. He will also tell you a thing or two about soccer! Forza Juventus! So, if you want the absolute best, see ALBERTO. I guarantee that your haircut will be ALBER-FECTO! Pros: Top quality haircuts Cons: Dumpy environment more

WILL NEVER GO BACK 12/16/2007

I jumped on the opportunity to get a haircut today because Astor Place Hair was one of the few opened on Sundays. I work late during the week so I said what the hell? WORST DECISION ever..The guy who cut my hair was named Alex and he was such a miserable guy..He was rude, careless, unfriendly and he rushed through my haircut. He never asked me if the length was good and he acted like he had no idea how to cut hair. I've never felt so stupid after leaving this place and I will never give this dump another second of my business. It's moderately cheap, but for a stupid funny looking haircut and very miserable barber, its NOT WORTH anything. DO NOT GO HERE!!! please take my advice and please understand that places like this should never be functioning or servicing people because they do nothing right. Not worth it, terrible atmosphere, and really unfortunate. HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND.... Pros: NONE Cons: everything more

Greedy Italian- otherwise a decent place 12/4/2007

I have been to this place several times and been quite satisfied with the service and environment. However, I was very disappointed when I last went, and the Italian guy who cut my hair handed me back the $1 tip I gave him saying he 'can't buy anything with this'. How unbelievably rude and embarrasing to the customer. $1 is standard tip for a simple, cheap haircut. So while their mannerisms can be crude at times, they give a good hair cut. Btw in case you were wondering, I ended up giving him an additional dollar and this time he took it :) Pros: Good atmosphere Cons: Employees not trained in good customer service skills more

Not just for simple cuts! 11/30/2007

I decided to go from boob-length hair to a pixie after my wedding. I was terrified, and though I'd had my hair cut at Astor Place before, I was nervous about taking something so complicated to them. Stevie did an AMAZING, AMAZING job on my hair--I didn't know exactly, precisely what I wanted, he had suggestions and they were spot-on. This looks like a three-digit haircut--for $25. Pros: cheap, friendly atmosphere, no need for appointments more

Coming here every time....every time to Rita!!! 11/15/2007

I came upon this place because I work close to it and read the glowing reviews. The first time, I went to Jose and he trimmed my VERY difficult hair exactly the way I wanted it and was wonderful to talk to! This time, I tried to get in with him, but he was swamped so I walked over to the lovely Rita's station. She immediately looked at my hair and said she could cut it in an hour. I went to a cafe and came back and she was ready for me!! (This never happens with hairdressers, in my experience!) We talked at length about what I wanted and she asked questions and was very meticulous with what I wanted. She talked me out of more highlights due to possible damage it could cause (a VERY honest thing to do when most would just do it for the money) and cut my hair BETTER than my original, very expensive salon cut!!!! She explained her layering and razored my bangs in a way that I doubt they will ever look bad again. I am SO impressed with her professionalism and you cannot beat the price. I LOVE this place! On top of everything, she has a wonderful personality! I highly recommend Rita and Astor Place Hair. Pros: Fantastic cut, fantastic value, great overall experience Cons: None! more

Best Hair Cut & Style Anywhere! I have New & More to Say 11/1/2007

OMG!!! Everyone should go to Rita; no matter what!!!! We do!!!! You will have the experience of a lifetime!! You will never look better and if you're smart you will never go to anyone else!! She gave me the most beautiful, classy highlights and designed the best haircut ever after my hair was ruined and spending a fortune at a "chichi" salon!! Rita Ragone is the best kept secret in NYC and the world!! You really need to this for yourself; she can create a new look and make you feel like a million bucks! Her personality is incredible and you will be treated like a star (she definitely knows how to treat you like a star, her list of celebrities is a couple miles long)!!!! I am sending everyone I know to her. NEW: Rita out does herself every time; I know you think this can not be the truth but she is simply the best!! She is an amazingly talented artist and pays attention to every detail about your hair style, cut and color; she creates perfection every time!!!!!!! Please do yourself a favor and give yourself the best gift ever by going to Rita!!!! You will look like a million bucks by spending a little bit of money; do it today!!!! Pros: Rita Ragone Cons: Places is old & could be cleaner; Rita's station is impeccable & always spotless! more

my hair is kind of uneven 10/30/2007

I went here because I read all the reviews and I am short on time and money. The lady who cut my hair had horrific hair herself (teased!), did not really speak english and my hair is slightly uneven on closer inspection. Also, not the cleanest place ever. Maybe I'm dumb because I didn't "ask for rita" like all these other reviews said. Skip it unless you have something really easy to do to your hair. Pros: cheap Cons: my hair is uneven more

Rita is incredible and talented! 10/17/2007

I am unbelievably proud to be one Rita's many happy clients at Astor Place! She is without a doubt the most professional, courteous and talented stylist I have ever been to and I have been to almost a dozen salons all over Manhattan. Once you find someone as great as Rita who does everything brilliantly, you will never let anyone else touch your hair again. She is always upbeat and friendly and her cuts and color treatments are perrr-fect. Rita is a real artist and when you leave her chair you know you have been to someone special who takes real pride in their work. I actually can't wait for my next Rita fix because I know I will leave with a big smile and looking my very best! Thank you Rita! Pros: Everything.. more

Best Hair Place in the city! 10/10/2007

Rita Ragone is without a doubt the most talented hair stylist in NYC and possibly the world!! Her cuts are the best and her color is always perfect. Rita should be getting the big bucks at the "upscale" salons but lucky for us you get even better hair styles, cut & color without the expense. You get the star treatment when you are in Rita's chair. She is the reason Astor Place Hair gets a 5+ star rating!! Pros: Quality beyond compare Cons: The place needs a make over! If it was not for the talent I would not go there! more

Alberto and Astor are the Best 10/9/2007

I've been going to see Alberto every month for the last 17 years - no joke. From when I was a single high school student to now married Wall Street exec with 3 kids. Perfect cut every single time - no joke. My colleagues all go to high priced salons - not me. Alberto knows exactly how I want it , but he asks me every single time anyway just to make sure. He may have a huge line of people waiting for him, but he still takes his time to make sure his cuts are perfect and his customers are happy. He's always jolly and full of energy. Just mention soccer and watch him go. I've referred lots of friends to Alberto and they have become loyal customers as well - some of them have moved to Asia and Europe, but visit Alberto for a cut when they return. I can't recommend Alberto enough. Not only will you gain a hairstylist extraordinaire but also an instant friend, soccer coach and the favorite Italian uncle you always wanted. more

Go to Rita: Great stylist, colorist & make-up artistry!! 10/5/2007

This is the person you want for re-doing your look -- hair, color and make-up. I found Rita by accident and I feel absolutely blessed to have been so fortunate. She is precise, highly communicative and has both a sense of purpose (serious) while being lively and humorous. Love this woman -- she does my hair color, my cutting and my make-up. I used to go to Devachan but their prices for basic services zoomed way out of my bracket. Stop transferring your wealth to overpriced salons!!! Rita is fantastic! Pros: Rita's skill, professionalism and humanity Cons: Astor could use a re-modeling/paint job more

Incompetant and don't listen 9/18/2007

I've had more than one haircut here and haven't been impressed, but today was the last straw. I just wanted my bangs trimmed and I was quoted that it would cost $6.00. Great- it should have been painless. Well the hairstylist didn't listen to anything I said. I told her I have side swept bangs and that I only wanted half an inch taken off. Instead she took off 2 inches! Which is really significant with bangs. And she cut my hair the complete opposite of how every other stylist has ever cut my bangs (even students have done a way better job). It's going to take at least 2 months for it to grow out to where it should be. And my bangs look feathered as well. All of this took about 30 seconds to complete and then she charged my $10! I asked for my money back but the guys who run the place said all they could do was charge me the quoted price. Stay away. Aveda Institute is a thousand times better and just a couple of dollars more. Pros: Cheap Cons: It looks like you got a cheap haircut more

Great Overall Experience 9/7/2007

I was so nervous about getting my haircut because I was one of those people that wanted a definite change but nothing too drastic but with no real idea of what I wanted. I called to make sure these guys could take me as a walk-in and they were fast and friendly on the phone. When I got there, they took me right away. The stylist (Rita) was so nice and really knowledgeable. She listened to everything I had to say about what I wanted and offered me some suggestions. The whole time she was cutting, she was making sure I liked it and that I was comfortable, but not in an overbearing way. The cut was fantastic! I am so pleased with the outcome and just had a great time while I was there. I'd walked past the place for years-- definitely worth going in. Pros: Friendly Staff, Trendy Atmosphere more

my hair is orange-red 6/30/2007

I went to Astor Place because many of the stylists have been in the business for many years, they are experts. I have naturally medium-blonde hair that was dyed lighter. I asked one of the colorists, if she could return my hair to its natural color. She said that she could. An hour later my hair was this uneven dark brown. It was a disaster. I asked her to fix it and she actually yelled at me and said that I didn't know anything about hair. The manager agreed that it was a big mistake and had another colorist "fix" my hair. Now my hair is this unnatural orange-red color. I can't even go to another salon because my hair is so damaged from the chemicals that it would break if I tried to bleach out the rusted hue. Overall, Astor Place seems like a fine place to get a hair cut. Some of the colorists even know how to do their jobs. While I was there I spoke to some women who are loyal patrons and very pleased with their services. I, however, will not be going back. more

Jose is the guy to see 5/9/2007

Ive been going to Jose for years now, and I dont think Id let anyone else touch my hair besides him. He listens to everything I have to say and cuts my hair exactly how i envisioned it. He even pauses along the way to make sure hes doing exactly what I wanted. Anytime I need to get a trim before an important event, like an interview, I go to him and he will fix me up in no time flat. I remember one time i tried to dye my own hair blue... after one wash it turned into a putrid looking dark green. I went to Jose and he fitted me into his busy schedule to clean up my mess. I ended up deciding to dye my hair completely black, which was incredibly well done from root to tip. I didnt live in manhattan until 3 years ago, but even before then, a trip into the city to get a cut by Jose was worth the trip. Prices is incredibly reasonable for a hairstylist in manhattan, I have long hair and a wash and cut comes to under $20. Be sure to tip well; though it would be hard not to after you get his great work. Pros: Great work, inexpensive, attentive more

Jose is the best bargain in New York 5/7/2007

I have been getting my hair cut by Jose for two years. From day one he listened to what I wanted and gave me the exact haircut that I wanted. He is always ready with a smile and some great conversation while he cuts your hair. I hear his specialty is highlights, but I haven't tested his skills yet in this area. But if I do end up wanting highlights, I will definitely trust my hair to Jose. He's the best! Pros: Jose, Jose, and Jose more

Editorial
  • A village legend, this no-frills, family-owned hair salon hasn't spent a penny on advertising--or, apparently, on interior design upgrades--since opening its doors. What Astor does have is a massive reputation for inexpensive, quality service on a walk-in basis. It's also a gigantic melting pot, where teens, celebs, Wall Street execs and soon-to-be punk NYU freshman unite in the common goal of good hair. Eighty-eight stylists specialize in everything from fades, etchings, color (punk to traditional) and curly styles to hair extensions, weaves and braiding.
