I have been using Jose for around 20 years at Astor place and I have never had a bad haircut. I highly recommend Jose. Pros: Good haircut for any style. Interesting place. Cons: The facility is in a downstairs basement. more

Jose has consistently been superb 9/26/2006

Jose has been cutting my hair for almost 20 years, ever since I was a teenager. He has consistently done a great job, always understanding what hair length and style I desire. When I moved away from NYC to attend college and had to go to a different barber, I always came away appreciating Jose's skill and expertise even more. In fact, I would often wait until I was on holiday break in New York to have Jose cut my hair. Now he is the only hair stylist I go to. I always trust his suggestions and I can rest assured that I am in good hands with Jose. The only downside I can think of is that sometimes I have to wait for an appointment with Jose because he is so popular. more

There's Nobody Like Jose! 7/17/2006

Where do I start? Well Jose has been cutting my hair for 7 years, and during that time I mean NOBODY else has cut my hair. He always leaves me satisifed and at a great price too! Not to mention he always has the newest products at hand! Also, Jose is a great conversationalist with a good outlook on life. Just today he told me that a hornet stinging him this morning was a good thing, because it made him feel alive and reminded him that all people do is complain about nothing. I'll wrap this up by saying thanks Jose, you're the best! more

Great value, especially for trims/simple cuts 6/14/2006

It's great for the value (for the girls - $20 for a haircut and $40 if you get a blowout). Make sure you go there with exactly what you want in mind, and be able to describe it, otherwise you could get a very different variation. Great for trims also. I would definitely think twice about highlights from there though - I had Suzy - asked for light brown/honey highlights and even brought in a picture. Instead of the light brown, I got orange highlights. Literally orange. Apparently she decided to try some new process on me that she didn't quite have down pat. I had to buy a bottle of hair dye and dye it that night it was so bad. So maybe stay away from the color, but the cuts are usually good, and if you get someone you really like, make sure to ask for them again. more

Astor plus Jose - the best every time 5/12/2006

Astor is convenient and efficient. Plus the price and value can't be beat. I've had my haircut by Jose for some time now. It's always something to look forward to. Besides getting a great clean-up, he always gives you great service. However you want it. Takes his time and gives you great attention. Jose is a professional and makes sure you are satisfied every time. And he always in a good mood. Great guy to talk with and always has a good outlook on life. Makes the visit a pleasure. Ask him about his daughter. more

Luigi is my main man! 5/8/2006

I have nothing but praise for this amazing man! I have been to many high-priced NYC salons including Vidal Sassoon and Jonathan Sahag (got cut from Jonathan himself)and have also lived in Boston & gotten cuts on Newbury Street. I always always always return to Luigi. He is amazing and wonderful to talk to also. He is worth so much more than $15.00. He is in Italy for a month vacation and I am already missing him! Astor Hair has some of the best of the best, the trick is finding out who's who! Luigi is one of the BEST!! And I am a female with a layered shag haircut. Jose is the way to go! 5/1/2006

I have been going to Jose for 16 years! He is the best - you can have a great conversation and get a great haircut at the same time. Jose always knows what I need and has never disappointed me. Astor is really lucky to have him! He is great for any hair length or hair type. He has a completely dedicated following - especially my family! We LOVE Jose and would never go elsewhere. Jose is the best! 3/13/2006

I've been getting my hair cut at Astor Place now for almost 20 years. During that time, I've only used 3 stylists. My current stylist is Jose (to the left when you enter) who is extremely good with Asian hair. I always get a clean and even fade from him. He is the rare barber who will give you full attention even if there is a line of people waiting for him (which there often is). I'm a music producer so a fresh fade is essential. A sloppy fade and my business suffers. LOL. Jose is also friendly and conversational. No weird vibes and no akward moments. Good cut, good servive and a good price. Sometimes there's a line for him, but it's worth the wait to look right. Ask him about his daughter anf her doggie. more

Jose es magnifico 3/3/2006

I have been going to Jose for close to twenty 20 years and highly recommend him. Pleasant conversation and excellents cuts. From cutting my hair in the middle of a 4 hour class at NYU to coming in from LA, it has always been worth it. As you can tell, he is very popular so either call beforehand to see if he's busy, pick an off-peak time or have time to do a little shopping in the village - he'll hold your place for you once you check-in with him. since my old stylist left, she recommended Josephine. professional, sweet, she comes through on making the grade. my first highlights were ok, but with Josephine she made me shine. a totally new person, which I received many compliments. I Love her and will continue to go to her. Miguel is also an excellent stylist, between them two.... what one cannot accomplish the other one will. many of the staff are also very attentive and courteous. just remember to say hi to everyone, and you will see them respond back in their own kindness. I have been going to Jose for 18 years and I have NEVER been dissatisfied! I love the way he cuts my hair - he always listens to me and gives me his informed opinion. I read recently that you should take the advice of your hairstylist if you have been with him/her for several years, because he/she really knows your hair. I TRUST Jose completely and have brought my whole family to him. Jose is the BEST! Astor is LUCKY to have such a skilled, wonderful stylist on their team. Definitely a 10 in my book! I also love that you can be whoever you want and look however you want at Astor Place - it is 100% New York!!! Pros: lively, high energy more

ALBERTO IS THE BEST! 2/18/2006

Some one said to me recently "What do you use in your hair cause it always looks so good." It was a real question. Nothing special I replied just gel. I thought about it later...its not the gel. Its the Barber. When you go to see him its not just a hair cut but you hang out! The conversation, the music, and atmosphere makes it seem like the movie Barbershop. Electronics, soccer, travel, or relationship issues with everything in the middle are up for conversation. I've been to other barbers in a pinch but I know where the best is thats why he's been my guy for 15 years. And thats no joke. more

i have been a loyal beneficiary of his talents for over 7 years now, and he has always satisfied and then some. whether it's a finance-job-related short cut, longer spikey jam, or even my every-5-year-mohawk experiment, he has come correctly, and i thank him for it. and you will, too... to update this review for 2009-2010: i have now been coming to Jose for all of the above for the last 9 years now and he never never disappoints! Whether he's on the Times or with the Gypsy Kings he's always grounded. I can always count on an amazing haircut everytime I'm there. What can I say...I have been a loyal customer of Jose's for as long as I can remember which is probably in excess of 20+ years. Actually, my family has been going to him as well, and I have a number of friends that are loyal Jose followers for over 15 years. Not only will you receive a $100 haircut for a mere $15 (man's wash and cut) but you will get some of the best free advice out there. Although I rarely get into NYC anymore as I live in Central New Jersey, I always make it a point to see Jose every 4-6 weeks to get my head straight in more ways than one. A genuinely great person who has a passion for what he does. What more can you ask for??? Make sure to tip him well because he deserves it!!! more

A no go 2/1/2006

I definitely would not recommend this place. I went based on a good review I read on citysearch and really regretted it. The hairstylist hacked at my hair and the scissors which she used hadn't even been sanitised. I went to save money but am going to end up spending more now that I have to get it recut. Never again. more

I have been going to Jose for 4 years now and am very happy with him. Please make sure you give him a nice bottle of red wine for christmas. Jose is a great guy as well as a great stylist. I highly recommend him to everyone. more

Alberto has been cutting my hair since 1997, and every single time he does a perfect job. He has cut my hair for my graduation, my marriage and for other important events. He even makes me feel good about my graying hair. He just tells me, "The gray hair you see in the chair is left over from the guy before you." If you want a great haircut every time, go see Alberto.
