I went to 13 coins on 4th of July around 2am, it was quite unruly (very bad crowd) and no security in sight. As I approached the entrance I was harrassed by people who were outside drinking alcohol and picking fights. After getting my name on the waiting list, I was attacked and stabbed by these same people. While bleeding inside 13 coins I was told by staff that I had to leave, while my attackers were allowed to seek refuge in the back and hide a firearm before the police arrived. The hostess that demanded I leave told the police she personally knew the suspect (whom had the knife in his pocket so they took into custody). I've been going to 13 coins for over 30 years - now I think I'll pass. more

Looks like the Rat Pack could walk in any second. Leather high back studded bar stools, pendant lighting, and a relaxed staff all contribute to the retro styling. Food was delicious, but watch out! Not a place for dieters! They don't hold back on the oil! Dine at the bar and watch the cooks toss up a meal in the flames! Good place for after hours chillin' and munchies. Thank you for the worst meal I've ever had. The fatty meat. The raw vegetables. The waiter who acted like he just got fired. What the hell happened to this restaurant. I used to love going here. now its an expensive grocery store because no one knows how to COOK the food. Letting me know I wouldn't have to pay for your first mistake? Of course you took the first plate back. I can bet that even you wouldn't eat it. My second order, I'm thinking who can mess up manicotti but congratulation, you messed up the second meal too. How much salt do you REALLY need in manicotti. Trying to save money by piling on the cheese? The woman next to me ALSO gave you back her plate because your chef didn't know how to cut tomatoes. TOMATOES!!! I paid gratuity because its the polite thing to do. So you should return the favor and give me WELL COOKED FOOD when I've ask nicely and paid for it. Pros: There were chairs. I've heard many good things about this restaurant and had been wanting to go there for a long time.\r \r My boyfriend and I went for our 3 year anniversary and I ordered the filet mignon. The steak itself was decent but nothing spectacular. However, the fried onions on top of the steak smelt horrible. They had the smell of old oil, exactly like the smell of fried onions in a can that are 5 years old. I was extremely disappointed because it was obvious that the onions where either from a can or fried in very old/dirty oil. I don't know much about cooking and food but I know the smell of old fried foods. The pasta that came with the steak was below average as well, just pasta with olive oil and parmesan cheese on top. For what we paid, it was certainly not worth it. \r \r Despite that, the fact that it is 24 hours is great. It is also a lovely environment. Would probably order something different next time. For about five years I ate breakfast at 13 Coins almost every Saturday. It is a bone fide Seattle institution.\r \r Historically it has been famous for many things including huge portions, huge number of choices, huge chairs to watch the open kitchen cooking, and huge waits during busy times. The food was outstanding and reasonably priced, all things considered.\r \r Over the years it has changed hands. The portions have gone down a bit, as have the crowds. Nonetheless, the food is still good. I had lunch there, opting for a good Caesar and adding crab to it - yummy. My friend, Linda, had a frittata which is still huge and still tasty.\r \r more

My boyfriend and I have been going to the Coins for a very long time and it has always been our favorite for late night dining. We go there mostly for the chef's counter show which can be amazing and so much fun! It's great to watch the chefs at work and the interaction between staff and customers makes it an experience that you won't find at many other venues. Quite often if you don't want the side dishes that are offered with the entree they will substitute for you. We love having somewhere cozy to go late at night and the free parking is a real bonus. I don't really like to sit anywhere but the chef's counter and will wait for it. Something else that I find a plus is you never know who might be eating there. One time when we were there we spoke with Elliot Gould who was dining there after the theatre. \r I am only giving 3 stars though because we have noticed a change in the quality over the last couple of years. We had a horrible experience there last year, but I wrote the corporate office who responded quickly with an apology and a $50.00 gift certificate, which covered a nice lunch. The attention to detail just isn't the same. We will still go back, but I do miss the old Coins. You used to feel like you were at a 5 star restaurant. The food and staff were incredible and quite a few of them had been there for as long as we have been going there. Now I don't seem to recognize any of the staff and their training isn't what it used to be. I also agree with the cleanliness issue, the ladies room could use an update and maybe new fixtures. These reviews tell the tale. 13 Coins used to be a great place. We went there and were so disappointed, the food was inedible, the service was at best incompetent. the place was actually dirty with food and debris all over the floor. There are so many great places to dine late in Seattle. I will never go back to 13 Coins, it's was a lot of money for horrible food and service. Rating: NO STARS SKIP IT! more

Dont bother going. New to the area and wanted a cool place to eat. 13 coins looks cool very nice environment but wow.......I didnt eat my dinner. The food was so bad! The GM was extemely passive and did nothing to accomidate us. She did let us know how ""sorry"" she was. lol. That ment nothing to me, I didnt eat and still paid. I had to go to another place to eat. I have been going to 13 coins for a few years. The last 2 times I have gone have been just aweful. The prices have gone through the roof and the food has gotten BAD! My bill was $110.00 for 2 but the food was worth about $20.00. I will spend money on good food and not have a problem but I do have a problem with over priced bad food. My sever left in the middle of our dinner, our new server had no idea what was ordered so I recieved over cooked food and and VERY SLOW service. I called to complain once I got home and was offered a refund. Although this was not why I called, I gladly accepted. When I went in the office to pick that up, the General Manager had no idea what I was talking about but said she would look in to it and call me the next day. I never heard from her. The first time I went to the 13 coins was after a monday night football game, and other than subway it was the only place open. The food was good, maybe a little over priced, but when it is late and you want a good meal you can't go wrong here, they have anything that you could want. Pros: open 24 hours Cons: price more

the reviews are back and forth on this place, but I decided to give it a shot either way. I am happy I did. Lets get something out of the way - the food here is good. I didn't have any of the problems that some of the other people reported with things being poorly prepared or less then fresh. My food came out really fresh and was well prepared.\r \r I agree that the cream based pasta dishes are probably more rich then most people are used to, I am Italian and the cream sauce was stronger then usual, but not negativley so. These dishes are prepared with rich taste and quality in mind, not being healthy. The easy solution is to order something that isn't cream based, they have such a huge menu you can find just about anything on it - and healthier dishes are included.\r \r The main issue here is the price, and most people are right, most dishes are priced higher then they maybe should be, but not by much in my opinion. The plates are pretty large, which compensates a bit for the high price, I would say. Also, if you are driving, the location has an abundance of free parking (much of it right across the street in the Seattle Times lot), which saves you some cash.\r \r The last stand out is the service and ambiance. From the chefs to the waiters, everyone is really nice, attentive and engaging without being overly so. The location is huge, super clean and well decorated. It's a really nice place and is really large, which explains the prices (in addition to the good food).\r \r If you dont mind paying a little extra for great service, good food and a sweet location - this is the place to go. I picked out 13 Coins during a Google search for ""Late Night Dining"" and decided to give it a try. The ambiance of the restaurant was nice, and I was seated in a spacious booth. They waited on me immediately, and gave me an interesting snack combo of somewhat stale French bread and a mixture of olives, celery, carrots, pickles, tomatoes and salami slices. Not complaining though. The menu looked interesting, with a wide variety of stuff, but the prices were REALLY high, especially for a casual diner.\r \r With such high prices I expected the food to be amazing, and sadly, it wasn't. My girlfriend ordered the salmon pasta dish, and what arrived was a basically generic piece of salmon with some fairly bland noodles, and the entire thing was DRENCHED in buttery sauce. This was unfortunate, since she doesn't like buttery things, but the truth was, it was too buttery even for my tastes. For a nearly $30.00 entre, it was really underwhelming.\r \r My own dish was the Crab Louie, and while it wasn't bad, there was nothing exciting about it either. It was served on a bed of lettuce with a few stray olives and pickled artichoke hearts, all of which tasted old. It also had two hard boiled egg halves, which were undercooked, overexposed to air, gelatinous, and totally nasty. I've had better hardboiled eggs in the salad bar at a fast food restaurant! The entre was a solid 4 out of 10, and it cost $25!\r \r We only ate about half our food before asking for the check, and the entire meal cost over $70.00 including tip! And we didn't drink any alcohol, and I had water. I expect food of this quality to cost around $10-12 per entre, so the prices are just ridiculous. I definitely won't be going back. I went to 13 Coins early on a Saturday evening (before 6 pm) and was seated right away. We sat at the counter so we could watch them cook. We ordered the Calamari for an appetizer and it was WONDERFUL! They did not overcook it as most resteraunts like to do and the dipping sauce was perfect! For entrees I had the Steak David - Filet mignon topped with fresh crab and served with Hollandaise sauce on the plate. I could have had just the filet and been just as happy. The Filet was cooked perfectly and it practically melted away from the knife. It came with pasta which I don't eat. But I'm sure if I had asked for a substitute it would not have been an issue. Also ordered by my party was Veal Parmagiana and another steak. Everyone raved about thier food! Desert was Creme Brulee and I couldn't have asked for better. They fired the top so that there was a nice thick shell. No soft spots which always leaves me a little disappointed. \r The highlight was being able to watch the kitchen staff cooking. We were seated near the Head chef and he was entertaining and didn't seem to mind answering our silly questions about what they were doing. He cracked a few jokes and the whole staff seemed to be having a great time working, which really goes a long way in the overall dining experience. \r I will definately go back... and soon! We visited the 13 Coins, Downtown, on 11-15-07. We had read a number of the reviews, so we were not surprised at anything. We arrived for an early dinner (4 PM), and as we expected, the hostess tried to seat us at the counter. Noting that the place was virtually empty, we asked for a booth and were seated at the only one without a window and with such a dark lighting that it took us nearly 5 minutes for our eyes to adjust enough to see our menus (yeah, exaggerating just a bit). We ordered couple of pasta dishes, both of which lacked much quality for the price -- thin sauce, bit overcooked, too salty. Also, my coffee was lukewarm, which I really hate. Wait staff was adequately attentive. It is classy looking place, for a diner, but with the price, I would not recommend the restaurant except for one visit ... just to verify what others say. I cringe when this place is suggested...the furniture is the only appealing part of the experience. Food is to die for...and not in a good way. Horrendously overpriced for the cheap ingredients and snotty service by bitter servers. The last time I went, the 11-teen-year-old hostess was literally leaning against the wall with one leg up, and didn't even look us in the face when she asked ""how many?"" Grease grease grease is the overpowering taste of EVERYthing. Be sure to keep the salt shaker close. It will help give the impression of actual flavor. more

Came in on a Saturday at 6:30 pm...realized that the wait would be long so we took the bar option (full service menu). We waited over an hour and 15 minutes for our meals to arrive! And when they did....one was totally wrong! When we asked to have it fixed, the server said she would and did....the same time we got the check we got my guest's corrected meal request!!! No apology, nothing taken off the bill....not going to be back!!! more

We arrived at 11pm on a Tuesday night (2 of us) and had to wait 15 minutes before we got seated. We found this quit unusual considering we saw several booths open and plenty of counter space. After the wait we where to our amazement, seated at the counter instead of the booth we requested. Asking about this we where told that the booths that where available where for 4 people only. (we where the only ones waiting)\r After being placed at the counter we noticed the cooks where very dirty, in fact the entire kitchen was a mess. Dirty towels laying on cutting boards, cooks using dirty knives to cut food. Garbage everywhere. Needless to say we decided not to eat there and left.\r I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone!!\r You would have a better time at Denny?s more
