Pinchers Grill on Hypolita (just a few steps from St. George street) has an amazing variety of foods for a seafood restaurant. I am not really a seafood fan but I could hear a lot of people around me saying that the Alaskan snow crab was delicious. My favorite was seeing the variety of ways I could have gator served to me: either as an appetizer, po'boy, or wrap. Gator is delicious and a Florida vacation must have. The prices are reasonable and the atmosphere on the patio outside is gorgeous as night falls. There are torches on the fences and candles on the tables and live music on the weekends. DON'T miss the opportunity to try their homemade Sangria by the carafe, either red or white. I didn't even know there was white. They're a new restaurant and a lot of people seem upset to hear that Pizza Garden is gone, but it really seems that Pinchers is doing more with the space.

The Krystal in St. Augustine always has a relatively speedy drive through, but having had to go inside (as multiple people had separate orders) was an eye opener to say the least. I had the same exact experience roughly a year ago and I thought to myself "it can't possibly still be as bad." It was. Being accosted by a homeless person before entering (which I know I can't really blame on the restaurant) might have been the highlight of the visit. Not only does the ONE person behind the counter slowly lumber every single order over to each customer in the dining area, it seemed I couldn't even hear any other employees in the back. It was dead silent in there. It took about twenty minutes to place our order and receive it. We didn't get our fries and had to show her our receipt to prove we ever even ordered them. Krystal needs to learn that no one expects their food brought to their table at a restaurant whose floor is covered in garbage. The food was decent and reasonably priced, just don't EVER EVER EVER EVER go inside.

I was going to be gracious and not post a terrible review of this Baymont Inn and Suites in Garden City, GA, just outside of the historic district of Savannah, but I complained on their website about a recent stay, and they had the nerve to respond saying that my issues would be addressed and then start sending me SPAM e-mails about staying with them again. That was the final straw. I paid about 140 a night and it turned out that there was DOG HAIR all over my comforter, and when I wanted to confront the manager about it, he was trying to rush out to pick up some elderly people he had forgotten to pick up earlier that evening in the "free shuttle." I'd already had to wait about an hour to talk to him, so I made sure to talk to him before I let him leave. I did get half off of the room, which was great, but I lost about an hour of my vacation and was left wondering what else wasn't clean in my nice looking room. Oh yeah, the spa was broken too.

Businesses in and around St. Augustine tend to be misleading when trying to tell visitors on their websites how close they are to either the beach or the historic district. This seemed to be the case when some friends came to visit and stayed in the KOA on Pope Road in St. Augustine. The website had apparently boasted that they were walking distance of the beach. This is not necessarily true. Perhaps a nice biking distance, but no walk to the beach, especially not if you plan on carrying anything. The facilities there were nice enough, with cheap pedal/paddle boats for rent (though no one there to help us out of the boats) and EVERYTHING closing at 8pm: the game room, the camp store, the POOL. It isn't even dark by 8pm in Florida at the time of year. That was somewhat disappointing. The campsites were also a little cramped. Luckily there weren't any neighbors, so we could still play lawn games. Be careful what sites you rent, because you are oftentimes right behind businesses, and some unlucky people were behind a car wash with vacuums going all day and into the early evening. They also have brochures in their camp store for "kabins" that are not on their property: luxury ones with bathrooms. They like to mislead you. They also say they are the closest campground to the oldest city. This is not the case. The much more beautiful and accommodating Anastasia State Park campground is closer. Just be sure to book there in advance!

The beautiful little custard stand that is Rita's recently became perfect: they now accept visa and mastercard. Before we were limited to getting custard before or after a walk on the beach to when we had cash on us, but now there is NO limit. Something about frozen custard is just so much more satisfying than ice cream. Frosties at Wendy's taste like total horse crap compared to a nice cup of chocolate frozen custard. I have not tried their shakes or ices, but I'm sure they are amazing. The girls at the counter are also always SO pleasant to deal with, and you'd think they'd hate being there, seeing everyone come up to the window in their suits. I'd be jealous as hell, but no: these girls seem to be happy to serve you. I don't know what it is about Rita's, but they just have the recipe for success.

We stopped at a small Chicago pizzeria this past weekend and asked what the wait was for a table. We got a rude shrug. So we left and found Go Roma on a corner. It looked empty, but we decided to chance it. Suddenly, a huge crowd rushes in behind us and pretty much in front of us (I just can't get used to big city jerks!). But anyway, the food was delicious. You order pizza (which is flat and hand tossed, not deep dish) by the half plank (for 2) or plank (for 3-4). They also had great little bottles of wine and many kinds of beer. They're set up like Crisper's, where you order and bring your number to your table and they bring you your food. The atmosphere was clean and cute, with those little light bulbs on the tables that look like candles. I kind of regret not getting "Chicago-style" pizza, but this experience couldn't have been better, except for all the rude people.

On our last day in Chicago, we ventured downtown just to see this museum and were somewhat disappointed. We were hoping for some amazing installations and many more paintings and illustrations than were present. We did accidentally skip the sculpture garden, but we saw way too much photography. I'm not saying that that's not an art, it just wasn't what I was expecting. This might have been the current exhibit, I'm wondering if they even have a constant collection? Anyway, the view from the fourth floor was stellar and a few of the works were more thought provoking than much of the stuff in the art institute.

The ferris wheel is pretty much the only reason to go to Navy Pier. I was visiting this past weekend, and on a rainy Saturday, we headed inside to avoid getting wet. The stores are sub-par and were perhaps too reminiscent of the usual St. Augustine tourist fare, and it seemed that half of the place was made up of convention space. The water taxi's and boats are cool. We saw the fireworks that night that were incredibly low and were poorly set to some pretty quiet music. Perhaps this was due to the poor weather earlier. So, considering how great it looks from the top of the ferris wheel, there just isn't that much to do at Navy Pier.

I was going to go and have the soup/salad/bread stick lunch at the Olive Garden last weekend. It was very recently advertised on TV, and while I'm sure I could have asked for it, it wasn't anywhere on the walls or menu, so I ended up getting a baked ziti dish that was delicious and my boyfriend says that their muscles are wonderful as they are soaked in less of a butter sauce and more of a soup. I hadn't been to an Olive Garden in at least five years and this is a good one. Olive Gardens are like Denny's in that usually, within a certain town or region there is a "good" one and a "bad" one. I don't know where the bad one is around here, but this one is a good one.

Maybe because I'd been hearing about this for so long from people who live in Orange Park and other people who knew the Landing in it's "heyday," I was expecting more. All I got were three or four stores selling sports paraphernalia, closed nightclubs, chain restaurants, and a FILTHY, empty food court. And this was on a Saturday afternoon. There was a free concert going on, but there was no one there watching it, which was creepy. The Hooters was PACKED, so I guess that's a good place to eat there, and there were some interesting looking restaurants kind of off to the side. I just learned rather quickly to avoid the landing and just head to San Marco instead for great restaurants, shopping, and a nice atmosphere. The entire downtown area just doesn't seem to want people there on the weekend. It's a ghost town.
