I discovered this place last weekend, and it is absolutely my new favorite bar. First of all, the layout is totally cool, with a slick little bar downstairs, and a posh, slightly eurotrashy seating area upstairs. They make great cocktails, and have an interesting selection of wines. They also have a list of scotches, but not being a connoisseur, I can’t comment on that. The vibe was just right…Hazelwood is nice enough for a fun night out, but the staff was friendly and didn’t give us any attitude, even though we showed up wearing jeans and were all in our twenties.

I’ve only been here for happy hour, but I think this place, just steps from the Ballard locks, is great. The guy who waited on us was very friendly and helpful; they have a great selection of beers and a kitschy-lite décor that reminds me of the kind of beachfront bar one finds along the Atlantic coast. I have it on good authority that their Sunday brunch rules and I plan to go soon.

This is an absolutely great place to wile away a summer happy hour…if you don’t mind waiting around. The food and drink specials are great (cheap, spicy and strong…a good combination), but I agree with some of the other posters here that the staff seems somewhat…altered. Running the gamut from slightly high to totally strung out, they could care less about you, or your order. Nevertheless, the deck is cool, the jukebox is hot and the people-watching is primo at this neighborhood joint.

Everyone here is right, KEXP is wonderful. Truly independent radio is a rare and beautiful thing, and I know that no matter where I go in the world, Seattle will always sound like KEXP to me. I just wanted to point out to anyone who doesn’t already know, that their website, kexp.org has live, streaming audio of their shows, plus playlists so that you can find out who you are listening to, and when they are coming to town. Perfection!

Dad Watson’s might just be my new favorite place in Fremont. The atmosphere is dark and cozy. We sat near the back where the secluded, wood paneled booths and eclectic décor reminded me of the kind of old-fashioned restaurants my family used to take me to back in New England. The brews are very tasty (girls, try the Ruby ale) and the dinner menu is great. I had the halibut and chips, which are now my second favorite in town (only because the price is slightly inflated compared to my top pick, Chinook’s).

Rain City is my favorite local video store. They have two locations in Ballard, so I can’t even imagine going anywhere else. The main difference between an independent video store and the chains is that places like Rain City have the weird, hard to find stuff, and the staff seems to have intimate knowledge of their entire stock. Screw Netflicks! When I want to interact with a human being, or just rent something obscure that hasn’t been released on DVD yet, I come here. They have a two-for-one special twice a week (Wed and Thurs I believe), so it really isn’t that much more expensive for the savvy renter.

Jai Thai is reasonably good, and definitely predictable. The restaurant is always hopping, and I haven’t always gotten the best service on weekend evenings, plus there is always a long wait at those times. (Once I even made a reservation, got there on time, and still had to wait twenty minutes for a table.) There is an upside though; last time I was there they were playing a Studio Ghibli film on a big screen. That’s cool, but if you are looking for excellent food, Jai Thai isn’t it.

Now, sometimes you just want to go to a sports bar. This brewery is a great place to go for drinks and dinner before, during, or after a baseball game. It’s big and can probably accommodate a pre or post game crowd, but we went during the first inning and didn’t have to wait at all. I love that apricot ale that they make, and somehow it tastes better here. I’ve herd that you can also get a beer “sampler” which sounds fabulous. The food is good too.

Not so much an Irish Pub as it is a college/sports bar with a thin veneer of Irishness plastered over it. Murphy’s has no atmosphere, and is the kind of place where they serve your drink in a plastic cup, yet it has none of the qualities of a satisfying dive bar.
