It isn't a dessert place per say, but my favorite desserts in town are at Kingfish. They have a shortcake that will make you high!. It is so big that it can easily serve a part of four. One unique touch is that they put a bit of maple syrup in the whip creme. It is amazing. They also serve mammoth slices of lemon cake, and bread pudding. The strawberry shortcake has to be the best dessert in town. Period.

I know there are better sushi places out there. In fact I rarely get to go to Fuji Sushi because my girlfriend alway wants to go to Maneki. But there is one thing at Fuji Sushi that haunts my memory... Oh how I long for you DEEP FRIED CALIFORNIA ROLL!!!. It is the perfect marriage, like peanut butter and chocalate. A jumbo california roll, tempura battered and deep fried. American technology steamrolling over hundreds of years of Japanese tradition. I know its wrong, but I love ANYTHING deep fried.

From time to time I finish up my bicycle rides with a stop at Arosa. They use a nice bittersweet cocoa in there mochas which is quite good. More importantly though are the waffles. Arosa is the only place in Seattle I know of that serves Liege style waffles. Waffles Liegeois are different from what Americans typically think of Belgian waffles in that they are smaller (three and a half to four inches across), denser (i think yeast risen, not baking powder), and are studded with crunchy bits of sugar. It makes a wonderful snack with a good mocha. The service is very friendly as well. They also have a nice selection of panini sandwiches that are quite good as well.

There are times when I get a craving for Kimchi Bistro that nothing else will satisfy. It seems like I have a favorite entrée that , when I'm there,I eat exclusively for two months. Right now it is soon doo boo--a bubbling hot, rich spicy soft tofu soup. It is sooo satisfying on a typical Seattle day. A few months back I was stuck on the spicy pork--a sizzling platter of thinly sliced pork with onion and cabbage in a tangy red sauce (not that you need another reason to change the premier white meet from chicken to pork). My other favorite is Pah Juhn. Pah Juhn is a savory pancake filled with bits of squid and green onion that you dip in a soy based dipping sauce. It has a great crispy outside and a steamy hot inside. Their kimchi is home made and varies batch to batch, but is always good. My only complaint is a couple of the items on the menu seem a tad over priced, but most are appropriately priced.

While Ti Cycles is small and has a hard time competing with the selection of big bike shops, their repair/service has been good every time Ive gone. Several times I have taken my bike there with random problems like creaking noises I cant figure out, and have not been let down yet. On more than one occasion they have fixed minor problems at no charge! I have had wheels trued there as well and they turned out very good.

Weekend Brunch around Capital Hill can be quite frustrating. So many times I have wanted, spur of the moment, to have a late morning brunch with friend. Nothing kills my lazy Sunday mood more than driving to Glo's and being told the wait is better than a half hour. Then to the Coastal Kitchen only to be told the same thing. Usually at this point its off to Pho So 1, but if I Just have to have a traditional breakfast I have not been let down by St. Clouds in Madronna. Yes, occasionally there is a wait, but not as long as others. They do good versions of all the breakfast standards:French Toast, Pancakes, Omelets, Corned Beef Hash, Country Fried Steak and Eggs. My personal favorite is the imperial scramble, which is basically fried rice with a bit of ginger, and a lot of scrambled eggs and sausage. It makes a surprisingly satisfying breakfast. The coffee cake can be a bit dry, but other than that I have liked everything I have eaten there. The service is good and the staff is very friendly. In the summer they have outdoor seating.

I eat at Kimchee Bistro about once a week. It as a small place in the Alley Shopping Arcade on Broadway. It is a few doors back from Hana. Their Kimchee chigae and SoonDooBo are Amazing. The arrive at the table at a rolling boil in heated iron bowls. Their spicy pork is very good as is their pah Jhun. They make their own Kimchee. Its the best. The prices range between $8 and $14 per entrée.

Toby's tavern is a regular stop for me any time I'm on Whidbey Island. It is in the middle of Coupeville which is a nice little historic/shopping town. Toby's has great halibut fish and chips and Penn Cove Mussels steamed in white wine. Toby's is not fancy by any means. It's a tavern in the purest sense. It has recently gone non-smoking though. Looking at the view of cold, gray Penn Cove with a steaming bowl of mussels is a great way to spend a winter afternoon.
