Back in the old days (ok, I'm aging myself here), going to the movies wasn't just about sitting in a cookie cutter theater, watching Coke ads and Fandango puppets, while wondering if the dorks behind you would stop chatting long enough for you to hear what's going on.
It was about an experience. Getting dressed up. Going somewhere classy. And not having to tap into your children's college fund to do it.
That is the kind of experience the Riverview Theater looks to bring back. With their very well maintained theater, glamourous in it's restored retro glory, ONE screen (yes, count it, just one), and authentic buttered popcorn, not to mention the fully reasonable $3.00 price, the Riverview is one of Minneapolis's true treasures.
Offering a wide variety of films daily, usually running the gamot from kiddy flicks in the matinee hours, to more indy-artsy fun stuff in the late evening showings, the Riverview has something for everyone.
While the seats don't recline, and if you're long legged you'll leave with a cramp, the authentic auditorium seating is enjoyable and promotes a sense of moviewatching community that you don't get at the other chains.
Even more interesting is that once in a while you'll get more than just a cheap movie there. This week, they played all three Lord Of The Rings movies, back to back, uncut, starting at 11:00 am, for just $6.00. Where else? And when the Packers cream (I mean, play) the Vikings, you can watch the game on the big screen. Usually for free.
Everyone needs to go to the Riverview at least once in their life, or Minneapolis experience, and if you're a resident, this place is definitely worth supporting!

The Cleveland Wok is situated on a pretty little block of Highland Park, in Southwest Saint Paul. The entire Highland Park neighborhood is quaint and cute, so to find a great Chinese Buffett in the middle of it is like finding a precious jewel in a treasure box.
I don't know what there is to eat on the actual Cleveland Wok menu - and here is why:
Who actually goes there for the menu items? If you visit Cleveland Wok anytime from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, all you will see is people lining up out the door, even mid-winter, for their amazing Buffett lunch.
The lunch is all you can eat, and the variety of delicious food they offer is amazing. You can get over thirty different dishes, all for just $5.99!!!
Some of my favorites include their Crab Rangoon, the Spicy Pork, Happy Family and Sesame Chicken. All the dishes are well prepared, and use quality ingredients. Though the atmosphere can be a little cramped, just waiting for a small table there makes you feel in the know. Like you and a few select others know something wonderful about this little Asian jewel, that the rest of the city has yet to find out.
Next time you're hungry for authentic Chinese food, at a great price, try Cleveland Wok.

Growing up near Little Italy, I was a bit skeptical when I moved to the Cities and people I knew would rave about Cossetta's. I thought to myself "how good can it be??"
But the first time I went into Cossetta's, my mouth was agape, and I was duly impressed. To begin with, their traditional Old World style decor, and adorable brick & wood work make it a very cozy and enjoyable place to spend an afternoon eating lunch. Though the second floor can get a bit crowded during meal times, it's always bustling and lively, and fun.
Their authentic Italian deli, complete with an array of wonderful cheese's, meats and olives does not dissapoint either. Though the prices may be a bit high, you get what you pay for in quality. Their traditional Italian sausage, either cased or in bulk, is delicious, with just enough spice.
And their restaurant, serving magnificent mostaccioli, pizza, sandwiches, lasagna, beer and more, is enough to keep a person going back weekly, just to try everything once.
Cossetta's is worth the buzz!

Do you remember that scene in Elf, where Buddy the Elf walks into the coffee shop and shouts "Congratulations, you did it! Wow! The Best Coffee In The Whole Wide World! Way to go guys!!" Well, the sign outside of the Lake Inn, on 28th Avenue and 42nd Street in South Minneapolis, says pretty much the same thing.
The only difference is, they're not exagerating. Now of course, everyone has their own opinions on who really has the best burgers in town. But Lake Inn is definitely worth checking out in your quest to find the best. Their burgers are pretty darn good.
And so is the atmosphere, for that fun, local, neighborhood feel. Kind of dark, would be smoky if Minneapolis were still a smoking town. And definitely divey. But all fun. The rest of their menu is great too. BBQ Wings, Sandwiches, etc, nothing dissapoints here.
Check out the Lake Inn next time you're hankering for a good burger and fries.

If you ask me, when you're trying to sell someone something as big as a car, and they can go anywhere they want to buy one, then you should be nice to them. Because if you're not, they'll go elsewhere. Moreover, they'll tell all their friends just how bad you treated them.
Saturn of White Bear Lake gives a bad name to that adorable city. Their customer service was not just lackluster, but downright rude.
When I first went in, they basically left me unattended for more than an hour, with nothing more than a brief acknowledgement and the promise that someone "would be right with you". Then, I finally got someone to help me and told them I was interested in the new Saturn Vue. So the guy brushed me off and said that I didn't look like the kind of girl who should be driving a Vue. But he failed to mention what a girl like me should be driving.
No first of all - what kind of sexist remark is that? How rude! What kind of girl DO I look like? The Pinto type?? Puhleeze.
Anyways, when I finally did convince him I was looking at a Vue, he gave me keys and told me to go on a test drive, but never even offered to come with me.
When I came back to the dealership, not having left ANY paperwork, license, anything, I asked about financing, and filled out the papework. He said he'd call me the next day to let me know what he could do. Why couldn't he tell me right then?
The next day rolled around, and no word from the Saturn dealerhip. Then another day. So I called & left a message. Then another day or two. Still no returned phone call. Finally a week went by, culminating with me speaking with a manager, explaining my frustration and saying " I just want to buy this car - why won't you let me".
In the long run I went with a VW instead. But I really liked the Vue, and had heard good things about Saturn customer service, like that's what they were known for or something. Well yeah, now they're known for it - but that's not a positive thing.

Paiges In Time, located in an Oakdale shopping center, is a great big relief from all the cookie cutters Archivers popping up everywhere.
The staff is friendly, and knowledgeable, and always willing to share their latest ideas or layouts.
The store is well laid out with a good selection of fun papers and embellishments that you won't find at the mass market scrapbook stores.
And they offer classes there, as well as a few empty tables for whoever wants to just pop in and crop.
Check them out for their large array of papers, and fun items.

Hope Community Church, located on 7th & 10th in Downtown Minneapolis is a great church to check out if you're just checking out Christianity, or have questions about what the whole church thing is about.
Located in a beautiful, 100 year old building, Hope is a very college age focused church. But that does not mean that it panders to the modernistic approach to God. Instead, Hope is "Vintage Christianity for a New Generation".
The teaching, by Pastor Steve Treichler, is solid, and completely bible based (expositional teaching, currently starting the Gospel of John). The worship is passionate, impactful and able to draw in even the most jaded person.
And the people who go there are friendly, sincere and real.
If you're a new Christian, or just wondering why you should consider giving church a chance, attend one of their Sunday morning services (at 9 & 11), and see what you think.

I love the Gopher Cleaners. Of all the dry cleaners in the Twin Cities, they are without a doubt the most knowledgeable, friendly, capable and best!
To give an example of what makes them so great – I had a gorgeous winter white wool felt coat (god I miss that coat!!!) from Banana Republic, that got accidentally closed in the door of my car last winter. By the time I got out of the car, the belt (it was trench style – will I ever find another coat that cute again??), and half of the bottom hem was COAL BLACK, with soot, road dirt and grease.
I took the coat into Gopher Cleaners, hoping they could do something, anything, but not optimistic. When I went in to get the coat the woman behind the counter looked at my with the most sympathetic and yet understanding look on her face. Acknowledging the wonderful style & unique look of my coat, she said “I know you love your coat. But it’s a wreck, literally”.
Then, she looked up with a smile and told me – “So here’s what I can do…” She then gave me two options – she was confident she could the coat clean again, with a little TLC and a good hand washing in her bathtub (Amazing!). This ran the risk of slight shrinkage, since it was wool though. Was I game?
I was!
When I came back two days later, the woman produced my coat, wonderfully clean, good as new, with no shrinkage, and NO STAINS. Moreover, she only charged me $5.95. SIX DOLLARS. For what was obviously a lot of hard work & time & labor.
I had another coat I took there and forgot about for literally all summer. When I went back in fall it was still there and the same woman smiled at me knowingly. She had replaced all the buttons free of charge for me.
Gopher cleaners has on many occasion bailed me out of a stain mess that I didn’t think was repairable, and then gone above & beyond the scope of service to provide results that were kind and pleasing.
They are, without a doubt, the best dry cleaners in the Twin Cities!!

Lexington Floral is located in Shoreview, on a small lot on Lexington Avenue. There store, on the outside, hides the treasures inside well.
When you walk into Lexington Floral, the first thing you will notice is the breathtaking array of unique gifts & home décor items they have. Including jewelry, cards, wrapping paper, gift items, clocks, vases, and home décor items, there is something for everyone on your gift list.
Towards the back of the store the floral area is housed. Lexington Floral is able to provide your run of the mill bouquet of mixed flora, including carnations or roses.
But where they shine is when you challenge their staff to provide a lush bouquet of wildflowers, or unique and exotic stems. I have received many a lush bouquet from there, including irises, peonies, orchids and more. They also have a great selection of beautiful silk, linen and velvet ribbons to choose from which will provide the finishing touch to any arrangement.
Be prepared to walk out feeling the lightness in your pocketbook however, since Lexington Floral is not inexpensive by any means. But their quality is great, and it’s a fun place to go browse.

Big Bowl Asian restaurant is definitely an Americanized Asian restaurant. But that doesn't stop them from having some great Asian food, including Chinese, Thai & spicy dishes too.
They have a great drink selection, consistant quality & menu, delicious tasting dishes, including a make it yourself stir fry bar, large portions and good service.
One to note, their Singapore Sling is pretty good as is their Coconut Milk Curry.
