Dress Right is a great tailor, and I trust my best clothes here, even though it costs a little more than other places. It looks more like a dry cleaners, but what's really special about this place is Jeffrey, their tailor. It's not uncommon for you to try on clothes, and he'll start to tuck here and there for different alteration options to make the clothes look better. Of course, it's up to you to decide whether to accept these changes. I've done both, and he turned a bargain Brooks Brothers outlet suit into a well-fitting tailored one. While the numerous alterations set me back $50, it was worth if for an interview suit. I've also had basic hemming done too. If you bring in an article clothing and want to maintain a certain detail (e.g. jacket sleeve hem detail or buttons), be sure to speak with him about it.

This store just moved to Chestnut Street, near the Green Street branchon Chestnut, and both are across the street from Daffy's, making it a nice bargain shopping destination. Buffalo Exchange seems to have trendier clothes than Green Street (at least the Green Street on Chestnut), but also has slighter higher prices. This is a consignment shop, so you won't find the dirt cheap prices that you can at thrift stores, but you can find brands that normally would be completely out of reach for me. The last time I was there, I saw brands such as Marc Jacobs, Armani Exchange, and Helmut Lang.

If you love rich and subtle flavors, creamy sensual ice cream and a cute modern ambiance, try Capogiro Gelateria. If you have never tried Gelato, please go. If you have been to Italy and returned to the States in search of anything that tastes like real italan gelato, you will not be disappointed. In addition to the one on 13th street, a new one opened on 20th and Sansom and several places like Capricchio's has a few flavors from them on their menu. After having Capogiro gelato, it is hard to go back to Ben & Jerry's.

The Roxy is a small independent movie theater with 2 screens that generally show one mainstream movie (e.g. Harry Potter) with one indie or foreign film like Ma Mere. Two cute individual bathrooms and a tiny waiting area. Unfortunately, the manager, a man in his late 40s-50's can be really rude. Practically yelling at folks in line. I had a particularly bizarre experience where I had gone to the bathroom and he was trying to prevent me from returning to my seat to collect my belongings. The female staff are very pleasant. Offers traditional movie snacks--popcorn, candy, soft drinks etc. If the male manager took an anger management course, this could be a much nicer place to see a movie.

For those who are wondering whether or not to go to Century 21, let me tell you about the types of bargains I have found there: Michael by Micheal Kors pair of brown slacks for $39, hot puma T-shirt for $10, Victoria's Secret underwear for $2 each, a Grail T-shirt for $39 (normally sold for $100). I was also five seconds away from buying a Guess leather jacket for $115 before I remembered that my other financial obligations! They also sell many other high-end fashionable and trendy clothing with deep discounts. I've spotted brands such as Pucchi, Versace Couture, and Marc Jacobs. They also have a home department, and good men's and children's department. This really is a store for somebody who likes bargains, and has some patience because it can get crowded, and sometimes it takes awhile to look through things.

As a disclosure, I didn't end up renting from Aly, but of all the dozens of brokers that I met, I was most impressed by her. She wasn't pushy and asked questions about what I was looking for, and really seemed to listen, because some time after, she called me up with other apartments that seemed to match what I was looking for. She's an independent broker, and not affiliated with a larger realty. She told me that she's been doing this for 10 years and appeared very knowledgeable about the Astoria area. Ultimately, I decided to live in another neighborhood, but if you want to live in Astoria, I highly recommend her.

I was apartment hunting in Queens, NY when I saw an apartment that I loved through this realty. I put down my deposit and filled out the application, with assurances that all would go smoothly, but it did not. I had made clear that I needed to move in by a certain date, and was told it would be no problem, but each day I checked to see if my application had been accepted, they either avoided my calls or promised they would call me with updates, which they didn't do. Because they were so sure that my application would be approved, I turned down my second choice apartment when my application came through there. Several weeks later, when my job in NYC was about to start and I had no place to live, I called the realty and they gave unbelievable excuses for the delay and offered to show my other apartments. They knew that I might be desperate but I wasn't going to fall for the bait and switch, so I pulled my application. Then it was a hassle getting my deposit back! I have excellent credit and work and rental history. I stayed with a friend for a month and then finally found another apartment, where the application process took all of 2 days.

I have bought almost all my gifts for my nephew at this toy store. It's small enough to be manageable but with a good selection. The toys all are "educational" but are still loads of fun. The staff is very knowledgeable and has helped me pick out appropriate toys. Also, I bought a toy that my nephew loved (a first remote control car for 18 month old boy) but sadly it stopped working shortly after I gave it to him, and I had no trouble whatsover exchanging it for a new one (even though it was outside their 14 days return/exchange policy time period). The store is located in Tribeca, on W. Broadway and Church Street--you'll see the big yellow flag outside. Free gift wrapping too!

There are 2 branches of the Find Outlet in Manhattan, and I've only been to this one (the other is in Chelsea). I've been once and I'm already hooked. They have brands like Alice & Olivia, How and Wen (and many others that I hadn't heard of). They have great prices for things that will sell for double elsewhere (although note that for the true bargain shopper, you still have to be willing to shell out about $40+, many things are in the $100 range, but the key here is "value" since these are high-end rare finds). I think that in terms of prices, the store is comparable to Century 21, give or take depending on the item. Of course, you'll have to deal with the crowds and no-door dressing rooms at Century 21, and the Find Outlet is smaller and more manageable. On my visit, I bought a pink short-sleeve cashmere top for $55, with intricate knitted detailing that's femme but not too girly, something that I can wear to work but still feel like a million bucks. It's worth a browse!

I do most of my grocery shopping at Trade Fair, since it's on my way home from work. Generally, I'm pretty satisfied with it. It has very good prices and a decent selection of multi-ethnic choices. Their deli in the back is decent. Interestingly, their spices are excellent and much better priced than a place like Pathmark. The main downside is that the supermarket, like many in NYC, have narrow corridors, and it’s a relatively small supermarket. If I’m in the mood for a larger more comfortable shopping experience, I’ll drive to Pathmark, but for convenience, I’ll go to Trade Fair.
