I spent a Friday afternoon exploring the Museum District of Tacoma and am so glad that I discovered the STORE at the Museum of Glass. (I did not pay to enter the actual museum...but of course spent way too much money at the museum store!) If you are looking for unique gifts from glass ornaments to funky stationery to unique toys for children, I'd highly recommend going to the Museum of Glass's store. I did some price checking on books featuring Chihuly's work and their prices are no higher than at other bookstores or museum stores. I had a lot of fun browsing the store and ended up with birthday gifts for about 5 different friends and family members!

We went yesterday for the first time, my youngest two and I. I had a harder time finding it because I was expecting it to be an actual museum building, not a storefront in the middle of the street across from the Woolworth's.
When we walked in, I thought, "This is it? Well, I guess it's only $10 and we don't have to join." The girl at the front counter was sweet. We went in. I thought for sure that we'd be there a max of maybe 1/2 hour, since I thought my 5 year old boy would be bored. There were only two other kids there. It was super quiet, so I thought, well this isn't good because that means no one comes here.
I asked the front counter girl and the other two mothers about this place, and they told me that since the weather was so nice that no one was coming, and that most of the people had already come and gone that day for an earlier class. AH HA!
1 and 1/2 hours goes by without me noticing and most especially, without my preschooler noticing. I looked down at my watch, and I was shocked by how long we'd been there. So I joined ($70 got me two households and 3 kids for a whole year, including reciprocity at 17 other kids' museums, 8 free guest passes, 3 free classes, newsletter, etc).
I was then told about all of the other wonderful offerings (Spanish classes, a toddler/preschool class a few times per week, TONS of activities for kids, etc), and I was just simply amazed.
After having had a Seattle Children's Museum membership and letting it lapse because we all found the museum way too boring after a few visits (and too hard to get to and park), I'm so glad that we've found the Tacoma Children's Museum. I agree with the other reviewer who said that this is better than Seattle - MUCH better, by leaps and bounds.

If you are looking for high quality sporting goods equipment...look no further. REI is the cadillac of sporting goods. They have everything from biking to hiking, skiing to moutain climping. The gear they sell is the stuff professionals would use. This is not the place to get something low end you will only use once...so if you are serious about out door equipment, get it at REI
PROS: Best products in every category
CONS: very pricey

Point Defiance park is simply an amazing oasis in Tacoma. The trails that crisscross the park offer an amazing variety of terrain with beatiful views and walks through old growth forest. The 5 Mile Drive is an enjoyable biking route, especially on Saturday mornings when it is closed to cars. Owen Beach is somewhat of a teen hangout, but if you hike north out towards the point there is a lot of great wild shoreline too see including some awesome clay bluffs. At low tide you can hike all the way around the point. This park is one of my favorite places in the world.

Don't get me wrong, I love REI as much as any other NW-erner outdoor enthusiast, but Backpacker Supply definitely has a cool factor going for it. Lots of great supplies for skiing (esp. nordic), hiking, snowshoeing, kayaking, etc., along w/ rentals. Their "sister business" Tahoma Outdoor Pursuits (or something like that) does kayak classes and tours, so that's kind of a cool thing to have right there in the store. Be sure to check out the "bargain" area and see if there's any good stuff there. Cool place to browse and buy outdoor clothing and equipment, and its nice to support the local guy every so often. (Though I believe they are affiliated w/ Marmot, fwiw)

The Centre at Norpoint is just wonderful. It has a huge selection of classes and activities for the whole family from swimming to working out.Kids as young as just a few months old can take "swimming" classes. The prizes are pretty reasonable and the staff is always friendly and helpful. They have a preschool program and offer a babysitting service while you work out. The parking lot is huge and it is always easy to get a parking spot.

Neat, every things organized. For all Tacoma locals, this is a great place to purchase any sport accessory you or others need. They are not too over priced with their products. I would recommend it for purchasing any items for soccer, baseball, basketball and etc...Just any hands on sport. It's great.

The Kobetich Library is a great library although a little small. The hours are pretty good, they are closed on
Sunday and Mondays. The staff is very nice too. They have small children's section, with a table, chairs and some wooden puzzles to keep little one busy while you look at their selection. You can keep books for 3 weeks and you can rent movies for free for 2 days. They also offer a summer reading program where kids can earn prizes and free tickets to the zoo for reading books.

You gotta sift through the industrial area to get to this waterfront ambience but it's worth it. After waiting at the the train tracks for the train to pass at at 7:30 on a Saturday, we made our reservation 10 mins. late.
It's a Marina! WOW!
The wait staff came in droves assisting but not intruding. You can tell that they are all about teamwork at Johnny's!
Seafood is their specialty but I had steak with Johnny's seasoning, of course.
The cocktails are strong and wine glasses small. Dinner was moderate-high in the price range...but worth it.
Johnny's is a perfect balance of ambience and sensory delight...and the location gives Tacoma a BIG city feel.
