This zoo has a great idea - combine zoo and aquarium in one place! A wide variety of animals and exhibits that any and everyone will enjoy! They have tigers, primates, elephants, wolves, birds, aardvark, reptiles, and more. Their aqua friends include beluga whales, walrus, sea otters, and puffins in one habitat, and a full aquarium with both north and south Pacific marine life such as sharks and octopus. There is something at this zoo for everyone. In addition there are plenty of educational opportunities either hands on marine displays or educational discussions and shows. The cost is very fair ranging from free (kids age 3 and under) on up to $8.75 for adults. I highly recommend taking the kids, or some other family or friends, and spending the day enjoying these great creatures!

Wow, I finally found a little kids' heaven right here in University Place. Odyssey 1. Oh yeahhhhhh, how cool is this place. My oldest son had been to a few birthday parties here with his dad and brother, so I had never been. Since school was out on St. Patty's Day and it was raining and I was feeling rich, I decided that Odyssey 1 was the place to go. What the heck, I thought, try it out. If it sucks, then I can choose to not come back.
I found a coupon for $5 in tokens. The admission price was good for all of us: $11 total. I was amazed by the largeness of the play structure and it's relative safety and cleanliness. The employees regularly patrolled it too, so that was good.
We ordered pizza, and I was fully expecting the same gourmet quality of a Chuck E. Cheese piece of cardboard. Not so. Their pizza was actually quite good and flat. I was surprised, so then I wasn't so taken aback by the $16 price for a large pepperoni. The games were fun too, although $5 in tokens does NOT go far at all.
It wasn't packed like I thought it would be with school out and rain. We had plenty of time to sit and chat with the locals and eat our pizza. I never felt rushed or overwhelmed. Even the baby liked it. So I blew $27 to entertain my kids on a rainy day, and it was so worth it.

This is a non-profit art house theater staffed partially by volunteers in downtown Tacoma. The ticket and concession prices are a little cheaper than commercial movie theaters, and the selection usually includes movies you can't find anywhere else in the Tacoma area. Sometimes they have midnight movies or special events, like a special run of Hitchcock movies.

The Blue Mouse Theater is the only one of its kind left, certainly in the area, if not in the whole country. A small neighborhood theater dating back to the 1930's, with authentic original decor and a small stage where they used to give away free dishes on Dish Night. :-)
Seeing a Fred Astaire movie in this theater is an experience unlike any other, for it gives the movie a genuine and authentic feel I have ONLY found at this special little theater!
But they have mostly new movies these days.... although at a bargain price. Tuesdays are bargain day. They also have something special - wireless headsets for the hearing-impaired (you do have to ask at the ticket office for one).
I feel very lucky to have such a special movie house so close by!

The Thomas Kinkade Gallery, located in the Tacoma Mall, is a truly amazing place. Kinkade is the Painter of Light, so the gallery uses light to showcase the many reproduction paintings. Control knobs let you change the lighting from bright to dim and back again, and this allows you to see the paintings changing colors and "lights" winking on and off. An incredibly amazing effect! You can compare the different paintings side by side, as well, with the light effects - much better than looking at them on a computer screen or in a catalog.

The Tacoma Rainers are the minor league farm team for the Seattle Mariners. The stadium is older but a fun place to sit and take in a ballgame on a summer night. There is an old town feel to the park! Tickets are about half the price of a major league game and you get to sit a lot closer - which comes in handy when they said guys down to the minors after being injured or something.

Coming from Seattle and having gone to Woodland Park Zoo many times as a child and now as a mother, I thought, that little Tacoma zoo can't be much. WRONG!
Not only is this nestled in the beautiful Pt. Defiance Park, but it's built on a hillside that overlooks the water. The have pumped a lot of money into the zoo to make it world-class. I enjoy walking around, and it's super easy to get around. It's always clean too, which I appreciate. It's much more modern, open and clean than the dirty old Seattle zoo.
The amphitheatre is a great place for kids to learn new things about animals, and they have an aquarium right in the middle of the zoo! Granted, it's pretty small, but when you're small, you don't care.
The new KidsZone is FANTASTIC! My kids just love it there. I'm so glad that we have a membership there, since I feel that it's much more of a worthwhile investment than what we spent on the Seattle zoo. It's close, lots of FREE parking, easy to get around, stroller friendly (and they have great strollers to rent too), great exhibits, friendly staff, beautiful setting, and the biggest factor - my kids love it!
