Nutel sold in mid 2012 and was renamed Royal Park Motel & Residence. The new management is less conscientious than the last. Poor cleaning, poor attention to maintenance. It is best as temporary housing for those in transition. About the best attribute is the safe parking under the building. more

A classic pay by the week (or Month). 2/28/2012

I stayed at the Nutel for a time. I once woke up with a sign taped to my door that said "There are three 'girls' Candy, Baby Girl and Jackie who have been robbing people who let them into their rooms. They don't live here and re not allowed on the premises." The whole place smells like piss, bleach, and concentrated Ramen noodles. It is conveniently located across the street from Mcarther Park, right off Alavrado St. with easy access to L.A.'s finest fake ID's, and affordable sex. The reason why people like Fante made places like this sound amazing is because they were talented writers, not because the places were or are. The Nutel is a classic pay by the week (or month) hotel. They give you their Time Warner rep's number at check in. I imagine a tourist would be quite shocked at the accommodations; though I have no idea how a tourist would wind up here. The Nutel is a sh**hole BUT as a single white female I was never raped or severely harassed, it's cheap and the management asks very little of you at check in (no credit card, check, deposit etc.) I never encountered any bedbugs and the maid bleach the room to bits once a week. If you are paying $40 bucks a night for a room in LA...you get what you pay for. The Nutel is fine. more

i cant beleive it 1/31/2010

when i was yonger this motel was the half decent on a hard core block near the liqour store. I never visit the actual motel but a one point there was a space above that was rented out to a church so see at one point i figured passing by after 25 years later things were better but i guess not. cant even rate it faithfully. more

slumlord owned 10/6/2009

The Nutel, is under siege from gang members selling crack-cocaine. Their customers urinate on the carpeted stairwells. 85% of the units are infested with bedbugs. A few registered sex-offenders are tenants. There is minimal to No security. High crime area. No heat in units. You would have to purchase a space heater. more

What Happened to Residential Motels/Hotels 1/16/2007

When I was growing up, I used to see movies about residential motels and always thought it would be sort of interesting to live in one. Well, a few years ago, I got my wish. When I lost my business, I got evicted and ended up in a residential hotel in Hollywood that was called The St. Francis. Don't bother looking for this because it's now been turned into a hostel called The Gershwin. You can find it on any number of travel sites featuring hostels. I have to warn you that there is virtually no sound proofing in this place and it can be rather drafty unless the new owners did something about it. A couple of years after moving out of The St. Francis, I ended up in another residential motel called The Nutel Motel. This one is a bit better because the owner actually treats you like a human being and you get maid service once a week and free toilet paper and towels and sheets to use. It's located at 1906 W. 3rd Street in Los Angeles, just two blocks east of Alvarado. The phone number is 213-483-6681. This motel has small kitchenettes with a stove and small refrigerator in almost all of the rooms and a color TV and private bath. The rooms aren't very large and you can get a one bedroom apartment for cheaper but you don't have to have credit or a deposit to move in. It is a popular motel and the only residential motel left in Los Angeles from what I've been able to find. It is first come, first serve and new residents are on probation for the first 28 days to make sure they will be a good tenant. They do not put up with drugs or deadbeats or troublemakers and will evict if one causes problems. It is in an okay but low income neighborhood and you do have to be on your guard. They do not allow pets and overnight guests cost extra. It is definitely a good place to go if you are in a bind and need a place to stay but at times it is hard to find a vacancy, so keep trying. more
