Better than most Sushi Restaurants in St. Louis. 1/5/2009

Let's be fair...this is the Mid-West. Therefore; you will not get sushi the same way you would if you were someplace with a larger, more pronounced Asian population, or somewhere close to a large body of water. Wasabi is the best place I have been; as far as St. Louis goes. The sushi; especially the yellowtail and octopus is always fresh. The specialty rolls seem a bit redundant in ingredients, but with different names. I'd recommend the handrolls. Pros: Many selections to choose from on menu; very courteous staff. Cons: Rolls can get a bit redundant. more

This place is an A+ 4/14/2008

I was up from Oklahoma for business, and to catch a ball game. I had the pleasure of stopping at Wasabi during my visit. This place has everything you could expect out of a sushi restaurant. The atmosphere, great service, amazing sushi, and an affordable price. I understand some are thinking ""what does this okie know about sushi?"", but I travel all over the East coast for business, and make it a point to try the premier sushi in that area. Wasabi definately exceeded my expectations. I was there with a few people, and after eating I was so pleased I made it a point to pay for everyones meal. I was very surprised how affordable this extremely fresh sushi was. One person that was in our group was not a sushi fan, and they fell inlove with this place. The parking can be an issue, but i suggest after your meal take a walk around the downtown area. Pros: Every possible thing Cons: I do not live in St. Louis more

I Have Lived in Japan and this Sushi Rocks! 3/19/2008

I love Wasabi! I know that it can get kind of expensive but we live in the Mid-west and if you want fresh fish (which is what you want for sushi), you have to be willing to pay for it! My husband and I eat here about once a month or so (we couldn't afford it everyday!) but sometimes I stop by for lunch if I am willing to spend $10 (which isn't bad for the amount of sushi that you get!). Pros: FABULOUS sushi! Cons: Expensive if you eat regularly! more

Sushi Sushi Sushi 11/21/2006

Great place to eat during lunch downtown or for dinner before going out. Definitely sit at the sushi bar in the back. The environment is nice with serenity music in the background. The Rainbow and Spicy Tuna are awesome. Can get busy. Pros: Great service and fresh sushi Cons: location more

Great sushi that is served in wooden boats! 9/18/2006

This is a great little place on Washington Avenue. I really enjoyed my experience here - everything from the warm hand towels to the miso soup, to the sushi rolls. The service was good, and the prices weren't too extreme. If you like sushi, give this place a try! Pros: Food, price, atmosphere Cons: N/A more

Best Sushi around 9/9/2006

Highly recommended. STL has many choices for sushi and Wasabi is one of the best. The one in Clayton is excellent as well. Service is always good. They were open for Mother's Day this year and it was an excellent gift for my mom. They gave us a free appetizer called ""Japanese Pizza"". You won't be disappointed. Pros: Everything Cons: Can't think of anything bad to say more

ok for downtown STL 6/20/2006

i went there for lunch during the week to see what all the hoopla was about and was surprised by the complete lack of customer service and creativity. i'm an avid sushi eater and i must say there're better places in STL, for better prices and better selectiosn Pros: the location and ambiance of the place is nice. Cons: service leaves much to be desired for more

Great and not-so-great 4/28/2006

If you stick to the basics, Wasabi is as good as it gets in St. Louis. The rice's texture is perfect; a little strong in the seasoning but that's common for Americans. The basic fish types -- hamachi, salmon, white fishes -- are also great. Where Wasabi slacks off is in other items. Examples: The saba is overseasoned and too firm, as if bought preseasoned like in many other places. The natto roll -- and points to them for even having natto -- had too much dark sesame oil and not enough scallion. Miso soup is bland (probably bland dashi) and tiny. Service is great. Parking on street. Cleanliness generally good but they need to replace the drape over the window to the kitchen. Portion size average but rice to fish ratio a little high. It's the second most expensive sushi in St. Louis. But they have oshibori! Pros: Basics are grea, Good selection, Oshibori Cons: Off basics mixed, Parking, Price more

Much less than I expected 3/6/2006

Considering the reviews and the former Best Of moniker, I expected so much more. The bottom-line of any sushi is the quality of the fish. Although the location, ambiance, and service were appealing, the sushi was well below average. Wasabi served me the first piece of unagi Ive ever had that tasted fishy. The bluefin, yellowfin, and fatty tuna were not fresh. Rolls were loose and the rice was not sticky. A seriously sub-par sushi experience that was priced on the high end. Although the location was trendy, the food was not. Best sushi around is still Crazy Sushi in St. Peters. Worth the drive. more

The best Sushi place I have been to 12/3/2005

I have been to alot of sushi restaurants and this one is simply in a class by itself. The sushi is well prepared, the service is great and the environment is very neat. You must try the Wasabi roll, it is to die for Pros: freshest fish, excellent rolls, great service Cons: none, none, none more

dont be ordinary! 11/19/2005

I have eaten at sashimi all over the world, and to receive the quality that you get at WASABI in both STL locations is a testament to their undying dedication to the customer. Try the toro, blufin, halibut, as questions invent and create your own meals Dont be so ordinary. Get some good Sake and something RAW then go anywhere in within a 400 mile radius, and youll agree they are the BEST. They have the Heart, Skill, and the willingness to do whatever it takes to please you. Pros: Fresh Fish, Great Chefs, Big Portions Cons: na, na, na more

One of the best places for sushi in STL 10/19/2005

Although landlocked in the midwest, Wasabi still offers the best sushi I've had in St Louis, although a bit pricy in comparison to places on the East or West Coasts. The decor is great for a date location too. more

thoughts to ponder 10/11/2005

Anybody who makes it a point to eat california rolls does not know sushi very well. Most places use imitation crab in california rolls. Some advanced sushi eaters will eat a california roll if it is drapped with fish as with a specialty roll and then it's okay because a such a roll with real crab would cost a fortune. Most sushi in America is much bigger than is traditional due to local tastes. Nigiri and maki rolls are generally on the small side, the huge portion thing is all american. more

Imitation Crab Meat?? 10/27/2004

Having worked in states from Massachesetts to California, Minnesota to Texas - and quite a few in between, I have had the pleasure to eat sushi in many different cities across the country, and as such I have quite a few standards to which I expect each sushi bar to reach. One of these is the use of real crab meat in its California rolls - that imitation-flavoured pollock simply isn't up to the job! I regret, Wasabi fails miserably here. Considering the price they charge for their offerings, I expected the real thing, and was very disappointed. As for the other sushi, whilst the fish was indeed fresh and moist, the portions were somewhat on the chintzy side - and they were charging top-dollar, too. The meal proved to be the most expensive I have ever had in a USA sushi bar - and I could have eaten more. Pros: freshness Cons: , imitation crab!, price more

Fantastic sushi experience 4/15/2004

A promising new comer to the average St. Louis Japanese restaurant scene. Huge, delicious maki rolls, tasty entrees and appetizers, fresher-than-average nirigi's and sashimi's combined with a classic traditional Oriental decor make this a sushi experience not to be missed. Services is excellent, but slighly pricey for average consumer taste, on par with other Japanese places. However, the size of the specialty maki rolls and portion of dishes offered make its value exceptional. Pros: Fast Service, Great Food Cons: , Streetside Parking more
