Comtemporary art at the Mattress Factory 11/30/2006

This interesting museum of contemporary art is located in the historic Mexican War Streets on Pittsburgh's North Side. It showcases installations (room-sized works) by many world renowned artists. there are some permanent exhibitions as well as those that come and go. Each exhibit has some interesting activities that go along with it, so it makes looking at the works much more interesting and educational. Kids under 6 are admitted free, but tickets for adults is $9. I'm not a fan of contemporary art, so I thought the admission fee was not worth it, but my kids did enjoy the ARTLab art activities. http://www.mattress.org more

Hidden away in the neighborhoods of Pittsburgh, you would never expect to find such an interesting place. It was rennovated from an old Mattress factory and it really has an indepth look at art for all viewers (from those who know nothing about it to very experienced artists) The collections feature mostly media adn are most intersting. The prices are fairly inexpensive and it can be a fun event for families, friends, or even casual dates. more

A Museum filled with Matresses 8/19/2005

When I first visted the Matress Factory, I knew I was in for a suprise. As you can tell by the name, the place used to be matress factory. But nowadays, the place hosts arty and chic installation art. All the art is conceived and produced on-site. Typically new installation go up in the fall and remain until summer starts. more

Experimental art museum 8/19/2005

The Mattress Factory is a cool idea. It’s a museum, to be sure, but it also commissions its own works, as opposed to curating pre-existing works. It lets its artists experiment . As is to be expected with any experimental art, not all of the results are visually appealing, but for every “huh?” there are usually a bunch of “cool!” reactions. It’s definitely worth a visit if you haven’t. more

the urban garden at the mattress factory 8/16/2005

If you think of gardens as planned spaces that reflect nature while revealing some deeper order, the urban garden at the Mattress Factory works with modern style. Blocks of concrete, runs of rebar, stone slabs, and brick walls are arranged with grass, trees, and water to create the perfect space for reflection on life in cities. The art inside is usually worth checking out too. more

Installation Art, good museum 8/16/2005

A great museum located in the Spanish War district on the North Side. If you like installation art, this is a great space. Collection changes frequently and there's an annex down the blow. Admission is cheap and free if you're a CMU or Pitt student. It's worth hitting if you're in Pittsburgh or if you're passing through. There's a small gift shop in the lobby with the usual assortment of museum gift shop things. The neighborhood is being revitalized and is up and coming. more
