got ripped of and insulted in the end for overpriced food 4/1/2012

so so food and awful bad service.Very greedy and rude people. They will charge you more for what you see on the menu. Then they will say you rude things if you try to argue call u fat, or try to call 911. best is stay away for them. There are honestly many other better thai food places in the city where you can go. I honestly do not recommend this to anyone as food is really pricey and owner is really very greedy and rude. I would not recommend anyone to go there not only me there are several other people who have encountered the same thing. I wish I could really complain about the behaviour of that manager. more

Worst Restaurant in Atlanta 7/21/2011

Worst restaurant experience of my life. I visited Penang last night after hearing good reviews from a friend. The appetizers we ordered were based off of the server's recs and they were mediocre at best. But that's not the point of this review. The real focus is the fish. \r \r We ordered the Thai Chili Fish as one of our mains. As soon as the fish was put on our table the stench was nauseating. It was hot, rotten fish covered in red sauce. I immediately told the server and she removed it. Out came the ""manager"" from the kitchen. He said nothing is wrong with the fish but I can ""subsidize"" you with something else like a desert. We said no thanks. At this point everyone is sick from the smell of the fish. He brings us the check and the fish ($26) is on the bill. I told the server, we are not paying for fish that is inedible. So the manager comes back out. He has a cell phone in his hand and says ""You call or I call"". We are confused. Who is he calling? A fish monger to tell us the fish is edible? No, he says ""911. You don't pay, I call 911"". I said, please call and bring the rotten fish back out here. Of course, he didn't call. They brought us a new bill sans fish. Paid and left. \r \r Needless to say, the food was horrible and the management atrocious.\r \r more

Best Malaysian I've Found in Atlanta 2/18/2011

This is one of my less frequent Buford Highway haunts, but still a good one. It should be noted, though, that I only rate the food. I'm not into ambiance getting in the way of some good eats. As others have said, the service is poor (sometimes exceptionally so), and the decor of the place is campy at best (with an explosion of fake bamboo). Also mentioned by others, the food does have some occasional misses, but my experience is that it's more like 1 miss out of every 4 visits (although that may be 1 of 3 for trying new items). I've found most of the food to be very good, especially the twice cooked pork shank (which might be one of my top 5 dishes on Buford Highway). So brace yourself for the waiters when you go in (I once had one ask me, ""You sure you don't want DIET Coke?""), and get ready to play a little food roulette, but for me the rewards are worth the risks. more

Excellent Malaysian food! 3/5/2010

I have been to Malaysia a couple of times for considerably long visits; and I can tell that this restaurant truly offers authentic Malaysian food. The roti canai, beef rendang, kari puffs, kari ayam, nasi lemak and Hanianese chicken rice are all absolutely fantastic, as are the noodle dishes, the various kinds of fried rice and the couple of different types of whole fish. I have been to this restaurant at least fifty times over the last couple of years and the food has been consistently delicious. \r \r Those complaining about customer service must really broaden their minds a little bit. We go to this restaurant to experience Malaysian cuisine in a Malaysian setting. We really should not be expecting the same style from every culture. In most other cultures, the server does not come to your table every few minutes to ask you how you are liking the food. I thought the staff here was nice enough and, of course, the food is absolutely marvelous! Pros: all the food I have ever eaten here! more

avoid this place, very poor service 8/21/2008

extremely poor service, it took the staff a long time to get our initial order, we waited 30 minutes for our drinks and appetizers, we had to flag down several staff before we got any silver ware and all we got was a fork, no spoons or knives. and our dinner never came! ( we waited close to an hour ) finally we got fed up and left!\r would not recommend this place to anyone, I have been here before , the service has never been great , the food average, but this it looks like this palce is going downhill Pros: cant think of any! Cons: can think of lots! more

Promising food; service could use improvement 1/16/2008

Impressions from a first visit: service was adequate, if not particularly friendly. We were evidently seated by the same hostess described by the reviewer on 10/10/2007 (or someone who studied under her): a scowling woman who snatched up menus, led us to a table and dropped them, and walked off without saying a word. Servers after that were better, but didn't 'table check' until we had finished and were ready to leave. (Also, I could really have done without the pop-country radio station that blared loudly from speakers in the dining room throughout the entire meal...)\r \r The food was mostly good. The roti canai, although not ""crispy"" as described on the menu (I guess ""soft, pliable, chewy Indian-style pancake"" doesn't have as nice a ring to it), was accompanied by a very nice curry sauce. Steak satay skewers were also good, with a mild turmeric flavor from the marinade. Char Kuey Teow, one of their signature dishes, was somewhat bland: similar to pad Thai, but in a brown sauce without any distinctive sweet or salty flavor, which really cried out for some garlic, chilies, fresh cilantro, etc. It tasted like a dish from which some ingredients had been left out. Nasi Lemak, another signature dish, was much better-- I can't say I really noticed much coconut flavor in the ""coconut rice,"" but it was good rice, and the accompanying curried chicken, fried egg, and vegetable side dishes were also quite good.\r \r All in all an okay visit, and I'll give them another chance. I'm not someone who needs to be fawned over by waiters/waitresses when I eat out, but I do think this restaurant could stand to work on their service a little, unless it's their intention to discourage non-Asian customers from eating there, which I'm sure isn't the case. (A greeting or ""hello"" when customers walk in would be a great start.) more

Exceptionally poor customer service, food is ok if you know what to order. 10/10/2007

Reading reviews dated back to 2003, I am surprised the customer service has not improved over years. I was greeted by unfriendly, expressionless waitress the moment I stepped into the restaurant till I paid the bill. During the meal, never were we asked whether the food was ok. She came back with the receipt without even saying thank you. In 6 months, I have been to this restaurant 3 times, and each time service was bad.\r In general, food is ok..but not everything. Oyster omelette and nasi lemak are good, you can try that. The rest depends on your luck and chef's mood? I have had Singapore fried noodle which was close to tasteless, koay tiaw (flat rice noodle) soup which was nothing like the authentic dishes you can find in Penang. Anyway, though food is not bad, I will not go back to this restaurant anymore. The bad service ruins my day. One can always find other Malaysian restaurants in Atlanta. Pros: food (if you miss home food, or want to try malaysian cuisine) Cons: bad customer service more

bad customer service and spotty food 10/29/2006

I was amazed when I was approaced by two servers for not leaving a tip. They kept saying it was my responsiblity to leave a tip. I did not leave a tip because the service was horrible. Tips are not mandatory and waiters and waitresses are not 'entitled' to anything. To make matters worse one of the servers came out and cursed at me and my family and challenged us to a fight. A really good way to build up a good reputation. As for the food, it was just OK. i plan on calling the manager and owner to straighten out this incident. more

Love this place! 5/4/2006

I've been dining here for years, and it's always great! Fridays and Saturdays are pretty crowded, but you can call ahead. I recommend the roti canai for appetizer, the chili chicken and kan kun belacan (entree and veggies), and the peanut pancake for dessert. Also, if you like coffee, try the iced coffee w/milk. Pros: food, service more

Great Restaurant 9/30/2004

This is one of our favorite restaurants. We never had a bad service and all the waiters are personable and extremely helpful. All their dishes are exceptionally good and consistent. Our personal favorites are Penang Asam Laksa, Rojak, Nasi Lemak, and mee goreng. Great prices and easy parking. I highly recommend this place! Pros: Great food, Great Servie, Easy parking more

Food is ok, service is not 5/25/2004

Most of the food is average. However, some dishes are very poor imitation of authentic Malaysian food. The worst part of dining here is the service. Some of the waiters/waitresses are just RUDE!! Pros: ambience Cons: , food more

Reminds me of home.... 1/13/2003

YUMMY! Food is very authentic to Malaysian/Southeast asian cuisine. If you like spicy food, you'll have to give this place a shot. We always order the beef rendang, belachan kang kung (vegetable), roti canai. Get ice kachang (a must to cool down your stomach) and bobochacha for dessert. Service can be bad when they are busy but they have made improvements. Pros: authentic food Cons: service is fair more
