The car I rented smelled like cigarettes, had stains all over the seats, chocolate on the volume dial, and seemed to have problems with the transmission. Contrary to other reviews...

WASTE of time. Reserved a mid-size. sadly, they were out! They down-graded me with no rate reduction! Then had the nerve to try and upsell me to full size. Can you say BAIT & SWITCH? So I cancelled. Went to Alamo, mid-size was comparable but they were out so they upgraded me for FREE! I wish I had read these reviews first. AVOID the headache/heartburn of the Payless bait & switch scam. more

I made reservation for Full Size , lady at the desk (Katherine with a bit of accent), printed out all the documentation car for Full size car price but charged me for small size car prepay fuel cost. When I went downstairs to pick up they gave me small size car without even informing me that they did not have any full size available at the time. When I went back to the desk to ask why I was given small size car, she did not even say sorry for what happened, rather told me that I have to wait there until they could find me a full size. I did not want to wait longer for which I have no guarantee that I might get full size, so I had to take Hyundai Sonata(which according to them is full size ). She said I have to pay $20-$30 more because they are giving me full size car. When checking me out upstairs, why printout the reservation for full size car price and charge me small size car fuel, when I made reservation for Full size? more

Booked a compact car online with Expedia. All good until I went to get to get the car after my flight arrived in Phoenix. Agent was rude. Claimed there was a new Arizona law requiring proof of insurance ( I've never had that request nor claim before at the Phoenix airport car rental agencies). When I showed my expired insurance card agent reluctantly accepted the card. Then he put a high pressure sales to get me to purchase their agency gas fill-up plan. I told him I always top off the tank before I return it. He insisted I take the agency plan. I said no. He then said, ""then produce a current insurance card."" I bid the agent a hearty good by and went to Enterprise where the agent said there is no such law and he promptly gave me an upgrade for the same rate with no request for a current proof of insurance card. more

At this point I am looking for a way to take stars away. Maybe I could rate this rental experience a few black holes.\r Anyway, the facts.\r My wife and I rented a car in Phoenix. A Nissan Sentra. It was cheap, not really all that clean, but it was something to get around town for a few days.\r I think it may have been the third day we had it , when that evening while driving west on Northern ave. the glass mirror fell out of the drivers side rear view mirror assembly.\r OK I thought. In the morning we called Payless Car Rentals and they told us to \r bring the car back as driving it this way could be unsafe. I agree.\r Next morning we return the car, fill out an incident report, they give us a different car and away we go.\r Let it be said at this point that except for the missing mirror glass from the drivers door and a few miles the car was returned in the same condition as when we first rented it.\r We received a different car from Payless Car Rentals, a Mazda something, again not too clean, but suitable to our needs.\r A couple days later we returned the car and carried on with our trip, in which Phoenix was only one stop.\r A month after we arrived home we received a letter from a representative of Subrogation Management Team, San Antonio, Texas.\r In this letter we were informed that we were being held financially responsible for the damages. The letter made no mention of an amount being charged.\r A month (approximately) later we received a second letter stating that we owed $1074.15. As we were not involved in any accidents or other incidents we thought this amount to be rather excessive and sent a letter to a representative of Subrogation Management Team, San Antonio, Texas.\r In this letter to her we suggested a payment of $191.96 based upon the prices and rates in the letter she sent to us.\r A representative of Subrogation Management Team, San Antonio, Texas responded with a letter again asking for an amount of $1074.15. She also included pictures of the license plate of the car we rented and a disassembled car door.( I have worked as a mechanic, and this is why I know that the car door was disassembled. Not damaged.)\r This is the last correspondence that we have received and we have not yet responded.\r To anyone thinking of renting a car from these people we would suggest (strongly) get all the insurance that they offer no matter how tired you are from travelling (we thought we were doing this but we just did not pay attention. our bad.) Take pictures of everything. Including the people who check your rental car with you. Have them give you a copy of every piece of paper they scribble a note on. Read the reviews on this company.\r You get what you pay for!\r This is probably going to be an ongoing process. Please stay tuned.\r Have fun and good luck!\r P.S.\r The car VA describes sounds to be the car we had. Was it a silver Nissan Sentra? We rented our car in Sept. more

The car I rented smelled like cigarettes, had stains all over the seats, chocolate on the volume dial, and seemed to have problems with the transmission. Contrary to other reviews, the individual who assisted me at the front desk was helpful, however the individuals at the rental (fleet) desk ran through the instructions so fast that I am convinced they were trying to rip me off on something. I would not rent here again. more

unneeded and un explained costs added to bill 1/3/2012

so we rented a car in az and they asked if my wife would be drivin also and sent us on our way little did i know when we returned the car they added $100 and when i asked them what the other charges were for they said it was cause another person was put on the list of drivers for that car, which would of been ok but they never even said anything about the extra charges they were going to be adding on from the origanal price they gave us and my wife ended up not drivin the car anyways. BAD EXPERIENCE more

Horrible service 6/27/2011

If I could give a negative rating, I would. The service at the counter was terrible. Person was rude and we received quite the negative attitude when we refused (over and over again) the additional insurance. Then the total cost was well over the rate I originally reserved it for due to ""additional"" fees. When we got down to get the car, they even tried to pass off a smaller model than the one I reserved and paid for! We had to go back and tell them to give us another car and again got an attitude. Ugh... I advise that you look elsewhere for renting a car. I know I will NEVER use this company again. more

Rip Off 5/30/2011

Was quoted 89 dollars for 3 days, bait and switch is an understatement. When we arrived they said we could upgrade from a ford focus to a nissan sentra, we are not familiar with either, so we asked what the difference was. We were told that it was a much larger and safer car. They also asked if we wanted to add a driver, so we said sure, just in case one of us wanted to take a break. Our total came out to 180 dollars. Apparently they added 10 per day to add a driver, and 33 for the upgrade. Here's the clincher, when we went down to get the car, we noticed a ford focus next to us and they were exactly the same size. If you want to rent a car, I suggest that you do not upgrade, or add anyone unless you want to double your bill. We have yet to return the car, I am sure their will be a scam there as well. more

Terrible experience 12/17/2009

I was quoted a price or $29.95 plus $17 tax online for a ""budget"" rental. However, at the counter, the total fees exceeded $65. When I was given the keys to the car, they total me to write down all of the exterior damage (scratches, dents, dings, windshield chips, etc.). However, there were so many, that the little diagram was not big enough. In fact, the car had been previously rear-ended and had a damaged rear bumper. When I asked the manager at the counter to help me verify that I got everything, she said she could not and that I would be charged on return if there was any ""new"" damage. When I heard this, I decided not to rent the car and they attempted to say that I was under contract and that I could not get out of the agreement. Luckily, I pointed out the rental agreement did not say anything about the car being previously wrecked. When I questioned if the airbag had ever been deployed, they immediately refunded my money. Do NOT rent here. Their cars are in very poor condition and, after their hidden fees, you will be much better off going to a reputable company such as Enterprise, Hertz, Thrifty, Budget, etc. PLEASE TAKE THIS REVIEW AS THE TRUTH. Cons: Long lines, hidden fees, damaged vehicles. more
