Fantastic Sushi in a dated restaurant. 4/14/2006

Fantastic dinner! Recommend w/ caveat. Decor. Especially the tables. Small, and austere, dry, and slightly dated, both in substance and cleanliness. Tables are stale wooden fixtures, the walls - 90s white and as lacking in interest as the walls of the Getty - floor needs a good waxing too. Decent, but expect more from $$$$s. Sit at the sushi bar, though excessively bright, has good ambience and its fun. Food. Omakase seems the way to go. Expensive, ours $150.00, but worth it. Reservations, mention your likes or dislikes for your tastes and freshness. Charred Toro, excellent, the Uni, like sweet melted butter on rice. Very pleased, but expect nothing less, chefs choice and in LA, one expects only the best. Mori did not disappoint!!! A definitely positive sushi experience. Expensive, but worth every penny. If they would just remodel out of the 90s it could be a $$$$$ experience Pros: Sushi, Chef Mori, Sake Cons: Price, Decor more

Excellent Sushi 2/21/2006

Had great sushi at Mori the other day: o-toro, needlefish, kohada, mirugai, wild japanese yellowtail, and even baby abalone. Everything was very fresh and the service was spot on. Pros: fresh fish, service, permium sake Cons: expensive more

Worst service, not worth it!! 1/26/2006

The food is great, most of the waiters are nice, but the manager is AWFUL! So rude that we left our dinner before finishing. You can get sushi that is just as good in about 10 other places without the attitude. Avoid this place!! Pros: Good food, Nice plates Cons: Rude manager, Bad parking, Expensive more

Avoid sushi, Dishes are excellent 9/29/2005

When they opened, it was clean and nice. This place was one of the very few place that served really good food at simplistic ambience. I was quite impressed, except for sushi. I went back several times over the years and dishes are still good and sushi is, well, not up to it's price. I'd suggest you to spend your money on other things. Don't go there often: if they recognize you, they'll jack up the price. Pros: good ippinryori, original dishes Cons: higher price for, frequenters, unimpressive sushi more

Boring Place, Bad Sushi, and Snooty Service 8/28/2005

I could not disagree more with the Citysearch review of this place. After reading its glowing review on this web site, I planned a special night out at a place I thought would be stellar. I was so disappointed! The atmosphere conjures feelings of being in some eclectic retirement home in Miami crossed with a psychiatric ward (all white everywhere). The white walls of the restaurant next to our table had soy sauce stains that had apparently been there a long while. On top of everything, the sushi was terrible and not creative. The portions would have been appropriate if I weighed 85 pounds. Finally, the prices were astronomical and our service was snooty. We won't return. Cons: Astronomical prices, Microscopic portions, Poor tasting sushi more

It was Terrific 6/10/2005

It was Terrific Pros: Nice ceramic plates, No wait for a table Cons: No Low Sodium Soy Sauce on Table more

Simply the Best 5/15/2005

Our favorite sushi restaurant. Expensive and worth every penny. Don't even think Mori Sushi is like any other sushi restaurant. We save and eat here on special occasions. We don't even try to order for ourselves, we order omakase(the chef serves you). This may cost $100-130 dollars per person, but again, worth every penny. It is not a meal but an experience. Mori sends you fresh and exotic sushi that will leave you stunned (like needlefish). The plates and mugs are artwork. I chose this restaurant to propose to my wife(she said yes). We eat here every anniversary. I remember every meal. There is no better uni anywhere! We wish we could eat here every week. Great service, be prepared to tip well. Pros: intimate, an experience more

Great find 3/16/2005

This little known restaurant really surprised me. Perhaps the most genuine sushi experience i've had in LA so far. I've been the Japan several times and had sushi there - Mori was almost the same. The wasabi was freshly prepared - and no more than was already on the fish was necessary (just like the way they eat it in Japan). Many of the patrons were Japanese - which is always a good sign. This place is kinda hard to find - doesn't look like much on the outside, but just look for the fish drawing and go in. You'll be pleasantly surprised. Pros: Sushi more

For a modern kaiseki experience 2/6/2005

I went to Japan about a month ago and had a ""modern-kaiseki"" meal at a ryokan (Japanese Inn). When I went to Mori Sushi last week, I was reminded of my meal in Japan. And to my surprise, I found the quality of the meal, to be as good as what I had in Japan. I ordered the Omakase dinner (at the sushi bar) with a friend and we were served various small dishes, including dashi-cured ikura, kombu wrapped amadai (red snapper), and ended with sushi. I was served kohada and sayori (two types of fish rarely served at other sushi bars), excellent uni and two types of ika. Service was well paced; the selection of sake was limited, but well thought out. Although it was expensive (over $100 per person), it was, all in all, one of the best Japanese meals I have had in the U.S. and Japan. Pros: Great variety, Exceptional sushi, Good service Cons: Omakase is expensive more

Where' s the wasabi? 10/28/2004

This is a place that I actually want keep as a secret for myself+ friends. The intimate white interior (approx. 10 tables) w/ Noguchi paper laterns provide a zen setting, where the focus is the sushi. The quality of sushi begins w/ the quality of the fish and it was a very high quality. Traditionally, additional wasabi is not served with your sushi; which they follow. Service was very good without being intrusive. Ahi tuna taco was a very good appetizer along with the salad w/ a apple/ carrot dressing. Excellant sushi, a good value for the cost. It was very enjoyable lunch and I will be back. Pros: clean space, clean restroom more

Fine Japanese Cuisine 8/26/2004

Unlike the previous critic, who obviously knows nothing about fine Japanese cuisine, I highly recommend Mori. I went with a group that included three visiting Japanese executives. The service was excellent and the food outstanding. We all had Mori-sans omakase, which consisted on a variety of dishes (including homemade tofu and grilled Santa Barbara prawns) and ended with the finest quality fresh sashimi and sushi. No, at high-end sushi restaurants you dont get wasabi on the side, because the chef has already put on an adequate amount before serving. And sushi is eaten with your fingers (not chopsticks save that for greasy Chinese food). The Japanese guests swore that this was as authentic as it gets, and although it was expensive ($1,000+ for our party of seven), it was worth every penny. Dustin Hoffman was sitting next to us and he seemed to enjoy his meal tremendously as well. Pros: Sushi Cons: , Ambiance, Location more

Stale Smelly Fish 8/20/2004

Fish is stale and smelly, cooked food just OK but small portions and very expensive. No wasabi, i guess you gotta buy it. No spicy tuna roll, they said they give yellow tail with jalopeneos and they cant substitute with regular tuna. 4 slivers of sushimi for $12 dollars which reeked like old stale fish. Yellow tail so dried out you could hardly swallow. I would go to a real sushi place next time and save a lot of money. Cons: , very expensive, small portions more

One of the best 6/4/2004

This place, like Nishimura in WeHo, is for foodies. The spicy tuna crowd will like it, but the sushi here is more tailored to purists and fans of hand-crafted approaches. The quality is excellent; I just let the chef decide what I will eat each visit. Pros: Top Quality Cons: , Ok Ambience more

keep on truckin' 4/12/2004

food: average but fresh service: snail pace fresh wasabi: priceless!! actually $7.50 per order if you can't find this unmarked sushi restaurant-very good if you find it, don't go in!! more

It's all in the rice!!! 10/10/2003

Inspite of the price tag, Mori Sushi is the affordable (more/less) version of Ginza Sushi-Ko. The plates were ""groovy,"" yet please the eyes. The sushi rice is nothing short of extraordinary and it has no equals (yes, even better than Nozawa's). Mind you, the fish is not too shabby either. Service is very attentative and friendly, and the owner Mori-san is cool and quality driven. However, unless you have very deep pockets, Mori is more or less a place for special occasions, but what a place!!! Pros: Extraordinary rice!!! Cons: High price tag! more

WOW!!! 7/9/2003

Simply the BEST sushi in LA. Mori makes his own dishware, grows his own rice, and grows/ makes his own wasabi. And the sushi is unlike anything I've ever had. It's a little expensive, but WELL worth it. Pros: sushi, service, decor Cons: price more
