Masse's Pastries

The coolest thing about Masse's, I think, is that they make tiny versions of their bigger cakes that look exactly like the big ones. That is, most places that do that make a giant cake with strawberries and cherries and chocolate balls on top, and then a small version that's... just a round chocolate cake. Maybe one with a few strawberries or cherries on it. But Masse's- they'll totally think about what the tiny version of those decorations are and go with it. That tiny cake will have tiny alpine strawberries on it, and tiny red currants to look like cherries, and tiny chocolate balls scaled to match the cake. So for your four dollars for that little cake, you don't just get an incredibly delicious dessert - you get to pretend you are a giant! They also have wonderful cookies. I highly recommend the chocolate cookies. Most of the time I feel that chocolate in a cake or cookie has wasted the chocolate, but these are different. They are packed with bits of chocolate, and walnuts that don't crunch and just blend seamlessly in, and fudgy cookie dough - it's like nothing I've ever eaten before. SO good. Sixty cents each! Worth two or three times that! more

Whenever a special occasion comes up, my friends and I don't even consider going anywhere other than Masse's! Their cakes are not just pastries, they're works of art. And unlike other creations that look almost too good to eat, these concoctions are absolutely as delicious as they look! For my birthday, Masse's provided a german chocolate torte with swirls upon swirls of dark chocolate layered with 14K gold on top. It was magnificent to behold, and every bit as wonderful to eat. I give Masse's an A+. more

Masse's offers the most beautiful, elaborate cakes with lofty chocolate sculptures on top of luscious layers of mousse, etc. They always offer about a dozen varieties of decadent cakes, from passionfruit mousse to key lime pie to opera cake and fruit tarts, each one is a work of art made with top of the line ingredients. The best buy in the store are the "mini" versions, which are approximately 3" diameter versions of the larger cakes. Take an assortment of these minis to a dinner party and let everyone sample the delicious variety. Typical cakes cost about $40, and the minis are about $3 each. more

Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! Masse’s is an experience in baking artistry. This very small bakery offers hugely satisfying, palate-tingling, rich and aesthetically-pleasing baked goods (I call it baked art). From the raspberry chocolate tarts to the mini-tiramisu to the Madeleine’s, you CANNOT go wrong with anything in this place. The treats are relatively pricey, but this is no ordinary dessert! They specialize in creating beautiful wedding and birthday cakes which are worthy of a spot in the Louvre. more
