Koryo Restaurant

It's not that the service was so bad as much as it was completely lacking in any courtesy or enthusiasm. They sat us next to their own table where they were eating, working on the books and griping about personal family problems, though they could have sat us somewhere else. The food was fine and tasty though they never stopped to check on us. We felt like we intruded on another family's dinnertime. This place is a little hard to find. It's in a strip mall with other places also called Koryo. We almost went to Koryo Noodle right next door. The place is actually called Koryo Wooden BBQ and it's toward the back of the area. The main entrees were delicious. Instead of grilling at the table we had the kitchen do it for us, which save you a lot of time and spares you the heavy grill smoke. I have to say though that the side dishes were not the best I've had and the lighting and service were quite bad. The restaurant was mildly busy and we tried on several occasions to get the waitress to bring water and each time she waived and then walked by without ever returning. This place has by far the best korean BBQ in norcal. You must grill at your table for the full experience. And the meat will taste 10x better when you pop it into your mouth straight from the hibachi. Try the Korean red wine. You drink it from a shot glass, was weird at first but very good! They have the best side dishes as well. Ask for the sweet fried potatoe wedges~!!!! Those things are the SO friggin tasty I couldn't believe it. Don't go if you want a quiet romantic dinner. This place can get very busy and full, so be ready to have a good time. Service can be mediocre to outstanding depending on the server, but it's good overall. It's reasonably priced as well. Open late. Reasonable prices. You can grill it yourself on charcoal, or have them do it for you. It's very much of a mom n pop family place, not in the best part of town, but not in the worst. There's a few other new Korean BBQ places with no english signs, but this is the place I always go to. The meat's tender, the beer's cold, the prices are good, the parking is easy. I came here with my boyfriend tonight for the 2nd time and had delicious delicious food! The bul go gi and kal bi were very tender and flavorful. We didnt have such a good experience the first time we went, which was several months ago, but it seems as if the food and service have greatly improved! And responding to previous people's ratings, I am not Korean but was not ostracized by any waitress. On the contrary, they were extremely friendly and polite! This is definitely one of the better korean restaurants in the berkeley/oakland area!! more
