I have always loved going to the Okland zoo even as a kid. My family would have a picnic on the picnic grounds right next to the zoo where they have barbeque grills available and picnic tables with benches. They have huge grassy areas for baseball games or just running around. After we eat we would walk over to the zoo and look at all the animals. It's just a great place to spend the day in.

My little cousin goes to this place and he says he enjoys it which I believe. He meet new friends and he is more nice to people around and is not shy anymore. Its an ecellenct place to let the kids go since it has many places to play and the staff is really cool. I recommended my other family member and they also enjoy it alot too. You should all join if you live around it. Decent pricing too.

The Oakland Zoo isn't as big as the San Francisco Zoo but my kids love this zoo nonetheless. I think it's because after we go around looking at all the different animals in the zoo there is a little amusement park where they get to ride on the kiddie rides. I remember enjoying this as a kid myself and loved the pony rides they had. They no longer have that for some reason though.

More
Oakland Museum of California is like a 3 level building with an additional area for special events. I've been here twice already and enjoyed both times I was there. The first visit they had a special showing of "The Lost City of China" where they had pictures, clothing, and items from the ancient Chinese dynasty. It truly was amazing to see such historic value show cased to the public for a small fee. They also supplied head sets that explained each show case which was great. You can wander off and don't have to stick with a group. The second visit was for school which I had to stay on one level at the museum. It was where they had the various animals and species around California. This is a place you have to visit if your ever in Oakland.

I stopped by this yarn store because I was in the area and I wasn't impressed enough to want to come back. For one, they have the organizational scheme I hate -- sorting yarn by color. To me that says they are not serving a serious knitting and crocheting clientele, but people who are interested in the fad or making endless scarves and shawls. It's not worth making the trip until you are already in the area.

The owner of this store is a sewing guru. She teaches evening classes at various levels which are very thorough. You'll come out of it with a solid foundation in the principles of sewing and fabric selection. If you own a sewing machine, but aren't sure how to use all the features, she'll make a housecall to tutor you on your own machine. The store sells a wide selection of sewing machine equipment, tools, accessories, patterns. More
Think of Children's Fairyland as Disneyland, except on a much smaller scale and without the big fancy rides and roller coasters. Fairyland is the place where a kid's favorite literary characters come to life, like the Three Little Pigs and Alice in Wonderland. All kinds of events happen there throughout the year, like puppet shows, storytime, children's theater, and more. The rides are mostly in the form of merry-go-rounds, a ferris wheel, a trolly, boat rides, etc. I went there often as a kid and had a blast there.

More
Article Pract has a good selection and reasonable prices. They carry plain workhorse yarns as well as fancy novelty yarns. The store set up is cozy but roomy and there is room to sit and browse through patterns. The salespeople are helpful and non-aggressive. However, the store could use more less-expesive yarns, most of their yarns are of very high quality and priced accordingly.
PROS: good selection, location, customer service
CONS: higher-end

Our Children (4 and 5) attend the Oakland Campus, for a year and a half now. The school has made them comfortable, confident, academically inclined and happy. They love talking, painting, writing, playing and learning.
It is very likely the best school they will ever attend.

More
This non-profit organization is an arts education center that offers fantastic classes in industrial arts, gallery shows and cool special events. While I haven't yet taken any classes here, I can definitely recommend attending their annual Fire Arts Festival every July. Two day pass is $40 and well worth it for the one-of-a-kind experience. The festival consists of three nights of spectacular aerial and fire performances, live bronze, aluminum and iron pours and many fire and light installations. If you're interested in classes, check out these options: Blacksmithing, Foundry & Moldmaking, Welding, Glass, Jewelry, Neon & Light, Kinetics, Machine Shop, Stone, Woodworking, Paper Works, and Fire Performance. The two best class titles are "Fearless Fire Eating" and "Dragon Breath."
