The food in this place is mediocre. I love the atmosphere - maybe a little too loud. I didn't really enjoy the food. There was nothing special about it :( I treated my family ou...

Sure could be better 2/6/2008

Definitely not worth the money. Went to Jar with a party of five. All order steaks or chops. All came out either over cooked or too rare. Very strange seeing as they wait staff seemed to really take an interest in getting that right. I had the pork chop and it was so over cooked it was tough to chew. The sides were nice and the little birthday tart they brought out was nice, but please, for this money they should do much better with the meat. Can't recommend it. Pros: Nice atmosphere. Nice Staff Cons: Way overpriced given the quality. more

Disrespectful service 2/1/2008

I heard many good things about this restaurant and was excited to try it. Unfortunately, I will not recommend Jar to anyone for a couple of reasons: (1) the food is exceptionally salty. Their ?signature dish? pot-roast was incredibly salty that I had to drink 4 glasses of water when I came home (and mind you, I only drank water at the restaurant so I was not dehydrated); (2) the maitre d? had the audacity to ask us to leave just as he handed us the bill because other patrons were ?waiting? for our table. Our reservation was for 6:30 PM, and Jar booked the next seating at 8:30 PM. Why should our party be penalized because the restaurant was overbooked? I am quite upset that we spent $1300 for dinner and were asked to ?hurry up? with our dessert. This is low class, in my opinion. more

Good American food, not too crowded 1/3/2008

The decor is definitely old school and the service was good. The dinner crowd was much older when I went. My boyfriend was more impressed by the food than I was, but I still thought it was good. Dinner gets expensive because everything is a la carte. Our salad was very small, not enough to share between two people, but the steaks were very well portioned. My opinion: good American food, but an average experience overall. My boyfriend's opinion: impressed enough to go back. Pros: well-made steaks Cons: menu is a la carte, expensive more

Old School Steakhouse 7/9/2007

This place is awesome. It is an old school steakhouse, like something out of Ocean's 11. And I mean the 1960 movie, not the modern day trilogy designed to make good actors boring and at the same time a lot of dough. Anyway, despite the below average name (Jar?? Thankfully shortened from its original ""Jar Jar Binks"" name) the place has a great atmosphere and awesome food. The crab devilled eggs are great. The pudding was super rich and very good. And the potroast (yes, potroast) was amazing. The steaks were also very good, if not great. The dining area is one large open room with low ceilings and it looks like a hybrid of the 1970's and mafia-bar backroom. It is loud but it just seems fun. The bar area is also a great a place to eat dinner because it is wide and spacious. Its a perfect place to go with the boys for a nice dinner out. The staff was great. Dressed like old school steakhouse servers, they paid attention to detail and made you feel important. The best part was the faux leather chairs with narrow arm rests and wheels on them. The kind of chair you could see your grandpa or Jimmy Hoffa swiveling around in. Sweet. Pros: great atmosphere, old school, service, good food Cons: dumb name more

Amazing Steaks, great wine list and a terrific atmosphere - you will feel so at home here!!!!! 5/10/2007

Jar is truly a unique place and you will love it every time you go there and believe me, you will easily find yourself going because this place is not only a great restaurant, its also a great place to meet for dinks and end up catching a great bite to eat. We've been there countless times, from ?mozzarella? night to late night dinners and the place never fails to deliver. Their Kobe Flat Iron steak, often a special, is to die for, along with the purple yams and you must try the various citrus salads. If you have room, treat your taste buds with the cobbler. The wine list is truly impressive but not intimidating and you will easily find something to suit your budget. The ambiance and atmosphere along with the service rules, and most importantly the attitude and arrogance you find in most restaurants of this caliber, is non-existent here. Everyone is so genuinely nice and makes you feel so welcome, you want to keep going back. Thank you, to everyone at Jar, you are all jewels!!!!!! Pros: Food, Staff, Service, Atmosphere, WIne list Cons: Parking - Valet only more

Amazing! 4/20/2007

All aspects of this meal were delicious! From the drinks and chips at the bar to the amazing desserts. I don't know if I'd recommend to some one who didn't eat meat, as that was certainly a highlight. The fried green tomatoes were perfectly cooked with a delicious garlic sauce. The roast was so tender you could eat it with your fork. The butterscotch pudding and banana cream pie were out of this word! I would go back for a special occasion in a heartbeat. more

It should be called JAM, not JAR 4/15/2007

8PM reservations on a Wednesday night for 3 of us. Open area and nothing to muffle the noise of the patrons. Food was good, not stellar - it was the service that ruined everything. The place was not crowded yet the wait staff couldn't wait to take our plates away - even when we were still eating off of them! We had to say at least 3 times, we are still eating that and hold on to our dishes. Not good. Appetizers - Lobster Salad (tasty), Lobster & Tomato soup (overly salty tomato liquid, can't call it puree, w/ 2 small pieces of lobster served in the middle - not good), Roasted Beet Salad w/ Goat Cheese (very good, flavorful and fresh). Entrees were lamb (ok), halibut (nice), salmon (very good). Sides are not included - we had roasted asparagus (very tasty and cooked just right) and mashed potatoes. Desserts were good - apple tart and chocolate pudding. Again, for the price we expected more out of the dishes, not very memorable and the service was horrible (our waiter was fine but the staff...a bus person started to take the mashed potato dish away even as one of us was scooping some out to put on their plate - well you get the picture. Several times we had to say NO, we are NOT done). We will not be going back especially when there are so many other better places. Pros: Beet Salad, Salmon, Roasted Asparagus Cons: Noisy, Rushed Service, Expensive for what you get more

Great Food....... 4/2/2007

Plan to wait even if you have reservations. Very poor reservation management. But, the hostess was friendly. Finally sat down and was greeted by a very informative and prompt server. The ribeye was tender and very flavorful. We had the creamed corn which was very tasty. (By the way, they don't have Mac n' cheese). We tried the banana cream pie dessert which was delicious. Overall a good dining experience. Keep in mind the restaurant is very noisy. Pros: Food, Staff Cons: Plan to Wait Even If you have Reservations... more

Good Pot-Roast and Duck Fried Rice :) 3/2/2007

Too bad I didn't order either one, but my friend did, and he shared it with the rest of the group. I ordered the Asian Pear Endive salad and celery soup. Both were very disappointing. The salad was sliced asian pears with a tiny piece of humboltd fog cheese and the soup was kind of bland and tasteless. The sundae dessert was okay, but nothing spectacular. It's definitely not what I'd expected. Pros: Ambience Cons: Pricey average to below average tasting food more

Very dissapointed. Not worth the money at all. 2/17/2007

I have eaten at Jar four or five times by now, but this last time I was so disappointed, I will never return. My pork chop was not only too rare to eat, but so salty-- I had to send it back. The asian pear-endive salad was terrible as were the overly-vinegared brussel sprouts. Our waiter was okay and the sommelier was knowlegable, but the quality of the food was totally under-whelming and unmemorable. Everything was over-salted, without much else happening on the flavor front. The house chocolate pudding was lousy, and we paid $15 for a piece of gingerbread cake with some powdered sugar on top. The bill was ridiculously high. I don't mind spending money on a good meal, but Jar has definately gone downhill. I'd rather grill a steak at home any day of the week. more

Seemlessly Wonderful 1/4/2007

We've been meaning to go to Jar for a long time, it has a great reputation and a friend of ours actually owns the building (not the restaurant though). Pros: Superb from start to finish Cons: hmmm....I don't live there! more

Great food, great service 12/9/2006

Heard from couple friends about this place and I was equally impressed. more

Great service and food 11/10/2006

I actually didnt expect much from this restaurant since I havent heard anything about it. Ive always drove by and was a little curious to check it out so my boyfriend and I went to check it out friday night. We got seated promptly even though it was busy and we were 15 minutes early. The service was amazing. Our food was even better. The best dish was the signature potroast. It just melts in your mouth. The wine was amazing too! Pros: Service, Food, Wine more

Great food, WORST SERVICE IN THE WORLD! 10/25/2006

My husband and I dined at Jar last weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere as well as the food, until the bill came. The check was for double what we ordered! We calmly told our waiter who assured us it would be fixed. Twenty minutes later, another bill is put in front of us, which was not ours at all. Finally, an hour later we were able to sign the check and leave. I only wish the story ended there. We found out days later that our credit card was charged 3 different amounts. After speaking with two different managers, an account, and the general manager the matter was handled. No one apologized to us or even offered a measly free dessert for our next visit. I will never go back and recommend it to no one. Pros: Good food Cons: Terrible management more

Best restaurant in Los Ange;es 9/26/2006

I have been to Jar 6 times in the past 6 weeks. It has been amazing every time. The lobster appetizer special is a standout, the tomato and sweet onion salad is great, the steaks are the best in the city, and the chicken and pork dishes are amazing too. The wine selection is fantastic. The sommelier, who works every night but tuesday and wednesday, is very friendly and helpful. The service is wondeful altogether -- very fast and the waiters always have great recommendations. Pros: Ambience, Wine list, Lobster appetizers more

The best part about Jar was Weinerschnitzel 9/4/2006

A date and I went to Jar the other night expecting the best, unfortunately the best was not to be found at Jar- it was found at Weinerschnitzel later where we downed ice cream in plastic baseball helmets. Upon arriving at Jar were seated at the far corner of the empty restaurant by the friendly hostess and promptly served by a very professional waitress. The table at the corner must have been a round table with the flaps tucked under- obstructing my 51 legs from crossing under it. The decor was bland and dark, contrasting oddly to the brightness from the open windows at 6pm. It was plain, decorated like the den of a middle aged cigar smoker, with light jazz being played in the background soothing us to sleep. The food specials were explained to us in a way we for sure didnt understand, but pretended to. We got a lobster appetizer, which was surprisingly small and although it had a lot of fancy spices- it just tasted weirdly raw and unappetizing- we were starving and didnt finish it. Then our main courses came. I ordered a salad, my date a steak. Our jaws dropped when my salad arrived. It was my main course and I could see more of the tiny plate then I could see food. It was three leaves of lettuce, 3 nuts and 1/3 peach sliced. It tasted delicious for the whole 3 minutes it took me to eat it. My dates steak was tiny and came with no sides, but ? an onion with fancy crumbing on top. He cut it and his medium steak dripped all over the plate. Thankfully I was starving so I ate what he couldnt bear to. When the dessert menus where placed in front of us we were just too full to order any. The bill was over $80 and we were starving. We began to drool over the prospect of Weinerschnitszel ice cream sundaes. We ate them, they were great. Pros: Weinerschnitzel Cons: pricey, borring, tiny tiny portions more

Fantastic food 7/8/2006

We ordered salads, which were very delicious and original, but the entrees were fantastic. The kobe-style hangar steak was fantastic, and the rib-eye, although a bit rarer than the ordered medium-well, was very, very good. Sides of creamed corn and purple yams were excellent. Service was excellent - our waitress was a professional, who was unintrusive but helpful. Pros: The food! Cons: Pricey more
