Everything is organic, including their wonderful cappuccinos! Local farm eggs delivered daily, great pastries, YUM! 9/7/2006

The first time I went to Cafe Fanny, I knew I was in for a treat. Their food is to die for. I absolutely LOVE the poached eggs on toast. And I didn't used to be a fan of French-style eggs! But theirs are so FRESH! I feel pampered eating breakfast here. I also love that everything is organic, no matter what I order. And it's certainly not easy finding organic cappuccinos in the east bay! Cafe Fanny also supports local farmers, and sustainable farming practices. Their food is amazing, their coffee is fantastic, and even though it's a short walk from the north Berkeley bart, I'm there almost weekly because I am in love with their food! It's worth every penny! Go as soon as you get a chance! Pros: Organic Cappuccinos in the East Bay! AMAZING food! They support sustainable local farming! Cons: Parking can be tricky! (Try the back lot) Limited seating capacity more

Love the chicken sandwich with argula! 5/21/2006

I've been going to Cafe Fanny ever since my sister introduced me to it (she had heard about it in Los Angeles). The counter service is actually very friendly (in spite of what other people have written) and even though you have to wait for the food, it is always tasty and well prepared. A bit on the pricey side but worth it for the fresh and organic eats. I love the chicken sandwich and the cafe aulaits. Pros: Organic, Fresh, Good menu Cons: Lack of seating, Price more

Too pricey, too rude to try again 10/5/2005

The setting is what it is - seats are hard to come by and cramped. The food is decent but never hot. The coffee is always warm. A big disappointment. The staff is generally rude. And, the prices are ridiculous. The food just isn't good enough to merit the prices. I've tried and tried to like it but it will not happen. Pros: Beignets, Zinc Bar Cons: Staff, Prices, Comfort more

Fed up with horrible service 9/18/2005

I've lived in Berkeley for a long time, enjoy the food scene here, and have grown to accept the attitude that often goes along with it. I've eaten at Cafe Fanny at least 30 times, and I have a love-hate relationship with the place. There is no disputing that the food is quite good (not phenomenal). But the service is so exasperatingly bad, that I often vow to never return. In particular, I pay for my beverage and don't get it almost half the time. Last time I was very rudely asked, "Well, did you *pay* for an americano?" The overall staff attitude is that I should feel lucky that they are willing to sell me food -- at quite high prices. Pros: food Cons: service more

My new favorite spot! 2/24/2005

I went here one Sunday morning on the recommendation of a friend. We didn't wait at all, ordered immediately and got a table no problem. My friend and I were sitting there drinking our Au Laits and I whispered to her, "This isn't very hot." They must have the place miked because 5 seconds later a server came rushing out with brand new Au Laits for us and said, " I don't know if those first ones were hot enough for you." Unbelievable! They really go out of their way to make you happy! The food is pricey but exceptional. It's just like a little Cafe on a street in Paris! I love it. The Au Laits are reason enough to go. Pros: Impeccable food, overthetop service, au laits Cons: gets busy, parking more

  • The Scene
On sunny days, customers pick up their food from the small kitchen (which is surrounded with baskets of fresh bread) then eat under olive trees in the nearby parking lot. A small stand-up bar inside, along with sparse outdoor seating, usually fills up with an eclectic mix of locals early on.

    The Food
The small lunch menu is prized for its freshness and clear flavors. With a simple twist, ordinary sandwiches become extraordinary. A sublime grilled-mozzarella sandwich is perked up by tapenade, and an open-faced egg-salad sandwich--toasted triangles of Acme bread slathered with chunky egg salad--gets a lift from a squiggle of anchovies and red bell pepper. Even the French cafe standard croque monsieur is a perfect balance of Gruyere and ham. Save room for seasonal desserts, such as fruit crisps and Cafe Fanny's creamy homemade ice cream.
