Old-time movie fun! 9/6/2005

This local theater has an old-school feeling to it. The beautiful historic building seems like a place that you see in movies. The movies shown here are usually not always the big blockbusters. But the less seen indies and such. I just love seeing movies here, for I feel like I am stepping back in time every time I come here! more

A touch of nostalgia... 8/26/2005

The Carolina Theater of Durham is one of my favorite places to see a movie. They usually have independent or obscure films that you don't find in the regular multiplex-type theater. Plus, it's a beautiful historic building, which gives you a little feeling of nostalgia--or at least makes me think of what it must have been like to go to the movies when my parents were kids, as the multiplex is what I grew up one, myself. Anyway, it's a great alternative to the "summer blockbuster" movie houses, with their boring crowd pleasers and expensive tickets. more

Independent Films Haven 8/24/2005

The Carolina Theatre is located in the so-called downtown district of Durham. It's also one of the only places in town to see all those artsy, documentaries, "Yu-ro-peein" (just kidding) and foreign flicks that require you read subtitles (in my opinion, the only films worth watching). Although I have not attended one, the Carolina Theatre also hosts many film festivals per year (check out their website www.carolinatheatre.org), as well as concerts (classical and folk/rock). Recently, some guy named Quentin Tarantino (ha) was there for some film viewing/discussion. Anyway, the theatre is not as state of the art and luxurious as the multiplex cinemas, nor will it play the latest blockbuster hits. The seats are rather uncomfortable, old, with cramped leg space but unfortunately (or fortunately?) the theatres are usually empty enough that you can sling your legs over the back of the seat in front of you. It really is a pity not many people have found this little gem of a theatre. Ticket prices are $5.25, or were the last time I visited (to watch "Sideways"). You can also get a Frequent Film card that allows you to see your 5th film free. Give this theatre a try, you just might find a new film that you've never heard of. more

Fun theater 8/16/2005

A very neat old building, with some neat "old style" architecture inside. This theater plays a lot of non-mainstream films, from simple non-hits to indie and foreign cinema. Your only option in Durham if you want to see some more obscure films on the big screen. They also occasionally will have concerts and other events in their large theater. Worth a visit. more

great place to perform 8/5/2005

the carolina theather is great, the acoustics are great. the seating in the caroilina theather is great because the seats are all on top of each other on a tilt sost hat the seaets can see the stage. the backstage areas are laid out and easy to navigate. the only problem is the parking. it is in downtown durham so parking is costly or limited. more

Old-fashioned grandeur. 7/27/2005

The Carolina Theater usually shows smaller or independent features and hosts the occasional festival (such as the North Carolina gay and Lesbian film Festival), so if you like films that are et a bit off from the mainstream, this is a destination for you. The City of Durham put a lot into this theater, and it shows. Carolina Theater is a great place to see a movie. The two upstairs theaters (one smaller, one medium sized) are nice, but the best of the three screens is downstairs, in a room that doubles as an actual stage theater, so it's like seeing a film in a theater from some bygone time. You can also order beer or wine (or even read the famous popcorn instructions) at the snack bar. more

Carolina Theatre - A great venue for live music, comedy & theatre and movies too! 7/9/2005

You can't go wrong here! This is an historic, refurbished traditional theatre that pulls in some really awesome acts at a pretty reasonable price. You can see what is going on now at http://www.carolinatheatre.org/. There isn’t a bad seat in the house, and you can choose floor or balcony seats. The stage isn’t far away from anywhere and the seats are comfy enough to hang out in for even long shows. Plus, there are two cinemas off to the side of the main theatre that show independent films. They are both nice theatres and have that “small town” theatre feel. Go patronize this cool historic theatre while you can, because they are frequently under budget pressure and could go under. more
