My bf made the reservation to surprise me and conversed w/ the chef prior to our arrival to confirm their knowledge of my intolerance/disease to be sure that this was not a problem. So, first, and most important to me, that worked out wonderfully--NOT sick at all (THANK YOU!). Now let me give you a quick background, I have lived and worked all over the country and travelled the world. I have eaten in some wonderful restaurants around the world. I have also worked in some wonderful restaurant ('four star') kitchens, as well. I LOVE food. MG, hands down, was one of the best meals I've ever had. In my life. Seriously. The chef will not substitute anything in his meals, but as I said earlier, we let him know that I was coming, and he was very helpful. It is unfortunate to see negative reviews and I can only base my review on my experience. I highly recommend.
Pros: service excellent, food is ridiculously great, excellent value (would say UNDER priced)

I absolutely LOVE the Buy 1 Get 1 Free Sushi deal. Before finding Shiki 2 years ago, I had never really tried sushi because it was too expensive and I was afraid I wouldn't like it. But you can't go wrong at Shiki, everything I've tried has been delicious.
I really like eel ( which I was nervous about trying but it doesn't taste anything like what it sounds like-- it has a very pleasant sweet taste) so I switch between the Sweet Dragon Roll and the Eel Fashion Roll. They both have eel and avocado, but the Eel Fashion also has cream cheese in it.
For my second roll I always go with the Shiki Crunch roll that is topped with crunchy tempura crumbles and delicious eel sauce (a sweet, thick sauce not actually made from eel, just traditionally served along side eel dishes).
At any other sushi place I either walk away still hungry or having dropped a ton of money. At Shiki I'm full on sushi for only $12.

Amazing food. Highly recommended. We went for our anniversary and were treated with the upmost kindness and generosity. We felt like special customers, and our food was exquisite!!!
We are going to make it our new tradition to go there every anniversary :)

Cosmic Cantina is a classic hotspot of Durham. Cosmic is located in the second story of a building off of 9th street. It might be hard to find, but once you discover it you will be back time and again. The actual building is pretty run down, but the food more than makes up for the interior. I recommend the burritos, they are the best around! Also there salsa is excellent, thick and chunky and homemade! It is also very reasonably priced, $5 for a regular sized burrito, with a side of chips and salsa. The mini burrito is $3 and is the perfect amount for most females (you will be full, but not stuffed to the brim).

Mad Hatter has everything for a casual meal that is anything but typical. The food tastes fresh and refreshing, not heavy. They have lots of vegetarian and healthy options as well as sinful treats like cookies and cakes. They have free wi-fi, so you'll find lots of Duke students camped out. When it's really busy, they do take up some needed tables, but I've never had to wait long for a table to open up. My young son loves to go there, and I love the wasabe wrap with salmon. Yummy!

Cosmic Cantina, a little hole-in-the-wall above Perry St. in Durham, is one of those places you miss when you're not in town. It's in a studio-loft space on the second floor with a back deck in a quasi-urban area, and it's almost tough to find if you've never been guided there yourself, but that's part of the charm. They're actually open daily until 4 a.m., which is hard to beat. As a Duke student, I know it's worth the walk or drive from campus at any hour of the day. Personally I like the chimichianga, but it's the steak, chicken and cheese quesadillas that bring me back. Absolutely delicious, and the cheese quesadilla is only $2.06. And I've read reviews of Cosmic lamenting watery salsa; I wonder, what kind of salsa are you used to? No tomato-salsa? Keep it to yourself, and leave Cosmic for the lovers.

they have a good bar be que sandwich and the service is fast and the price is not bad either. they are great about getting thigns odne right so if you are really picky about your food then you can rest because they will always get it right, well they did for me anyways. other than their food, they look clean and have a good snaitation rating.
