appetizers are plenty big to share and you can get 3 for the price of an entree. We left spending right at $50 for four. Patio was great! more

Z Tejas Grill - great family atmosphere 11/7/2010

Had a wonderful visit with my family from out of town. The food was exceptional. The atmosphere on the patio was beautiful and refreshing.Great family outing! more

How could service be so bad? 4/8/2009

We went to Z-tejas for my birthday, but there was no celebration, just a couple & a baby, out for a meal. Pros: We had a table Cons: The server that came with the table more

Sides Still Count: side dishes and out-sides 1/19/2009

On a Fri. night, restaurant was busy and bar was packed. Why do they own outdoor heat lamps, place them precisely on the patio, and then choose to not use them?? I felt more sorry for the waitstaff and the hostess though than I did for myself for having to wait for the quoted 2 hours. Waitstaff and host staff should not have to belly-up or trample customers just to walk through the restaurant. more

Nice place for large groups 10/19/2008

I've been to the restaurant twice with large groups. Both times we made reservations for lunches, and was seated promptly. The food was good and no mess-ups on taking orders or splitting bills. I particularly liked their Chile Relleno, which was not fried (healthy), and full of flavor and surprises, very much like the kind of chile relleno you get from inner mexican cuisine rather than tex-mex. There are also a hand-full of other dishes my friends enjoyed (while I ordered Chile Relleno over and over). Everybody I know likes this place. Only downside is parking. We've always car-pooled and parked on the side of the streets. Pros: Great downtown feel, great mexican and tex-mex food, great for large groups Cons: Parking, kinda crowded, a little pricy but hey it's downtown more

One of my Favorite places 10/2/2008

I don't think I have ever had a bad experience at Z'Tejas ever. In fact I love to eat there! These are some of my faves that you really just can't go wrong with... Pros: Free valet, Margaritas, food, multiple outdoor seating areas Cons: Queso is just ok, smoking not allowed on any one of the outdoor areas more

Great Patio dining, mediocre food 4/13/2008

Can't complain about the patio dining atmosphere, which is wonderful. However our food was just a little above average (maybe even just average) considering it was barely warm and not much to distiguish it from lesser priced restaurants in town. The sides were uninspired although it is a growing chain so consistency must be maintained. I would unltimately say go to this place for the atmosphere don't expect to be blown away by the food. Pros: Ambience on the patio Cons: average food more

Worse Brunch Ever!! 3/17/2008

If I could rate it a half star I would. When I first moved to Austin my roommate at the time worked at Z'Tejas and talked about their brunch. I had been in for lunch and it wasn't bad, so this Sunday when my girlfriend and I were wanting to try a new place for brunch we decided on Z'Tejas. She likes their margaritas. Pros: nice outdoor seating Cons: terrible food more

Austin Favorite 11/2/2007

Z Tejas is one of my favorite restaurants in Austin. The food is a combination of Tex-Mex, Southwestern, something or another but what it comes down to is that it's consistently good. They have the best salads (I love the ruby trout salad and the pecan crusted chicken salad) but they also have a variety of delcious fish dishes. If you are looking for something on the lighter side, sometimes I'll order the Ahi Tuna appetizer and a side salad. The wait can get long sometime so be prepared. There are two bars you can sit at in the meantime and enjoy a margarita. more

Unique restaurant 8/23/2007

I was staying downtown and someone suggested Z'Tejas. I can be a picky eater, but I found a few things I would have liked. I chose the Red Chile and Mango Steak Salad and it was delicious. It had some kick to it, but I LOVED it. Pros: food and service Cons: parking, but there is valet more

Delicious food! 8/20/2007

I would recommend anyone to stop in and eat at Z?Tejas. I love, love the Chile relleno! It is absolutely amazing!! It is so flavorful and unique. Their food is so fresh and delicious I can?t think of anything bad I have ever had there. I recently tried the pecan crusted chicken salad and I was impressed. I have found that all of their salads are extremely delicious. Of course, you must try their famous margaritas too! They are the best tasting margaritas I have ever had! I have never had a bad experience at Z?Tejas, the food and service is always excellent. Pros: Unique Food Cons: Parking more

Terrible service! 8/1/2007

I ate at Z Tejas last Saturday. It was a friends birthday. We were having a bite to eat before going out for drinks. The waitress, Jess, was very rude. She even ""shh"" and pointed her finger at the birthday girl. She ignored requests and was overall a terrible waitress. Our appetizers arrived with our food. That was the 2nd problem. Not only that, but I never got my food. Everyone else got theirs and I was so embarrassed. I reminded Jess again and it appeared to me that she forgot. She blamed the kitchen and walked away. After realizing that my party was finishing up and I still had not received my food, I walked to the waitress station to ask Jess to cancel my order because I didn't want to hold up my group. She knew that she would still get her 18% and did not care to treat us with any respect. After that, she asked me if I wanted to take the food with me? I had cancelled the order. I was so emabarrassed in front of my group. I have never been treated with such disrespect. She can have her 18% because I will never return or recommend that place to anyone again. Management should do something about her. Pros: Couldn't tell you, never got my food! Cons: Jess the rude waitress. more

Great Food, Acceptable Ambiance 7/19/2007

I'm not sure what some of these other reviewers are talking about, I think Z Tejas has some of the best food I have ever tasted and I am very particular. I have never had a dish there that I did not like. My only complaints are that there is always a very very long wait and though the restaurant is in two old houses (which is cute), the ambiance is lacking. The bar area is nice but it's hard to get a seat there and the main seating area in the restaurant is kind of bland and generic restaurant like. For a place w/ such amazing food I think the decor could be a little bit more classy. more

Note to Mr. Foles 2/1/2007

This location is struggling and the word on the street is decidedly negative. On my last visit, I hate to say, your staff was rude and unprofessional. It appears that you have in your employ immature children as employees. Pros: Taco Bell Light Cons: Taco Bell Light more

A good time! 7/11/2006

Z'Tejas is lots of fun! Even though the restaurant was busy, we were seated quickly and our drink orders were taken. The menu isn't extensive and there aren't any vegetarian options but selections can be made without meat. I had the Jrk Chicken Salad (sans chicken) and it was FABULOUS! The restaurant is rather spacious so things tend to get loud; it has a bit of a barn feel to it with lots of different rooms. There's also outside dining options and a bar. Pros: Good food, fun Cons: Loud more

A sure hit! 1/31/2006

I don't live in Austin so I was really happy that the one meal I had there about 5 years lived up to my expectations 5 years later! I had the stuffed pork medallions both times and I would go as far as saying that this is the meal I would want if it were my last. My wife had the snapper which was also superb. Waiting sucks but at least the ambience of the place makes up for it. Parking there also sucks. Valet is really the only option. Who cares! Pros: Food, Ambience, Pork! Cons: parking more

What Happened? 1/28/2006

Having Sunday Brunch at ZTejas is like a tradition. We hadn't been by in a few months because we had been trying out other places. We were eager customers when we arrived at 11pm. What happened to this place? The usual prompt, attentive and extremely efficient service was replaced with a lethargic and uncaring attitude, and not from one employee, but from the few we had to interact with. The pert, peppy hostess was quick to dump us off at a table, then nearly five minutes later our server came by and was totally unprepared to take our order. I would mention that it was not busy. The food came out with an uncharacteristic sloppy presentation on very small oval plates; the type you get at cheap Tex-Mex cantinas on South First. The food was not tasty at all. I write this hoping that ZTejas will get back on track. more

YUM!!! 11/15/2005

My sis & I had brunch this past Sunday (11/13) & LOVED this place!!! We had the Tomatillo soup that was soooooo good! We also had the Chile Poblano (can't remember the exact name as it appears on the menu)---it was the best stuffed poblano that I've EVER had! I live in Houston & would drive to Austin just to revisit Z Tejas!!! The service was great! I would highly recommend visiting this place! There's a cool antique shop next door to visit while waiting for your table! Pros: customer service, food, bloody mary's Cons: parking more
