loads of books - open late 9/14/2007

This is great. I'm actually allergic to cats, however I overcome the itchy skin and puffy eyes in order to shop here a couple of times a month. There's a daunting selection of reasonably priced books. more

Uncompromising -- they don't care if you don't like it 5/17/2006

One of the charms of used book stores is that half the reason they exist is that the owners just love acquiring and being surrounded by all those books. If you actually want to come in and buy something, they'll consent to sell it to you, but they'll go out of business sooner than pander to the public at large. Don't like cats? Don't come to Twice Sold Tales. The people who run it do like cats, and they'd rather have the cats than have you. What they do worry about is if you mistreat their cats, and there are a couple signs warning about this. The recommended book shelves hold unexpected nuggets of literary gold, and a random wander through the place produces an armful of everything you weren't looking for. It's true that the owners aren't going to come up to you and make nice and ask if they can help you -- but they also won't give you a hard time if you hunker down on one of the wooden stools and just read. They also have classy taste in literature. It's nice to see English majors find a niche in the world. more

Twice Sold Tales: Books in a Cat Playground 5/11/2006

I used to come to the Capitol Hill location on Fridays, just before midnight, and at midnight almost everything went on sale. But a few years after the other locations opened, the first storefront wasn't doing as well, and shrunk by a third of its size; fewer catwalks, but more of that catbox smell. Having Half Price Books move a few blocks away probably hurt them a lot! Some of its former employees complained about the neurotic aspects of working there, but it's still hip. I come by occasionally, because they still have some unique finds on occasion, but they seem to have been dwarfed by their aforementioned new neighbor. more

Large selection but rude owners 5/10/2006

Twice Sold Tales just off Broadway on Capitol Hill has a ton of books--the science fiction section usually has a great selection. The cat bridges above your head are novel but the cat boxes stick even though they are cleverly disguised. The staff/owners has/have often been rude but then the next time almost friendly. They do seem at least to know what they ahve if you ask for a specific book. And they are open pretty late. more

Open almost all the time 12/29/2005

This is a funky bookshop off broadway in Seattle on Capital Hill. This store never seems to close and searching for your hearts desire can keep you occupied for hours while you find many books that will draw you interest and realize you will never have time to read all the great books that you will find here. more

do you love books???go here!!!!!!!!!! 10/21/2005

this is one of my favorite places in the world!!!!!!!! if you love books, this is the place for you!! this is a used bookstore, the majority of which, are in excellent condition and they also usually have multiple copies of more popular books! also, if you have books you are done with, and don't want to hang onto, you can bring them with you for cash or trade value!!!!!! so, cozy up in one of the corners, and don't be surprised if you turn around to find a furry friend rubbing up against your leg! more

For the Indiana Jones In Us All 9/21/2005

Twice Sold Tales is your typical 2nd hand bookstore. Just off Broadway, you can skip the ease and cost of a regular bookstore and enjoy the search and thrill of victory (or defeat) in the many shelves of partially organized second handness. The problem, of course, is that their is no inventory, so unless it's a big name book and unless it falls neatly into one category, some books might take hours of searching to find, sometimes for nought. On the other hand, it might lead you to finding other books you'd forgotten all about wanting to read, and usually this means you can get all these books for about the price of one new Harry Potter. Twice Sold Tales is a second hand bookstore, which means that it's shelves have some character, but not necessarily the characters you're looking for. more

late night used books 9/9/2005

This store never seems to be closed, be it 12 noon or 12 midnight. I really enjoy browsing the shelves for some new find or a dusty, older edition of a classic favorite. The prices are great for used books. Also, they do a Staff Favorites display that is always good for finding new things--the people who work there have great taste. more

Used books 9/8/2005

Twice sold tales is my favorite place to buy books - you can spend hours in there looking through all their stock and they have lots of really sweet cats who live in the store to keep you company. It seems to be open all the time, and they have some kind of special that discounts the books 25% after midnight (used to be, anyway). Very reasonable prices and decent selection. more

Used books + open late = fabulous 8/31/2005

I like cats, so I don't mind their company as I browse the stacks. It was great when this place was open all night, so I was sad to see that end. Also, haven't been in a couple months, but did they sell off half their store and reduce their size? Best feature is the list of stupid questions behind the cash register. Love it. more

Beware of Cats 8/30/2005

I am not a cat person, but I love books so I was willing to give this used bookstore a try. But honestly the cats, cat smell, and cat hair where way too distracting to enjoy browsing the books. I will give them credit for the inventive locations of the cat boxes. On top of the cats, my visit was ruined by the incredible rude owner/manager (?) who was berating her employees. I won't be back to this bookstore any time soon. more

The best of all bookstores 8/22/2005

Twice Sold Tales has the prices of a used bookstore with the selection of an independent bookstore. This is the perfect bookstore to browse in, because you’ll find so many books you want to read and you can actually buy most of them. The bookstore itself has a wonderful, warm feeling that all the best bookstores have. more

Honestly, not the best 8/21/2005

I like used book stores, but I was not impressed with this one. It wasn't that cheap and the reason I go to used book stores is to save money. Maybe I've been spoiled by Half Price Books. Also, the selection wasn't very impressive, I couldn't find most of the books that I had gone there to buy. All in all, I'd say try another store. more

Late Night Book Browsing 8/21/2005

Adequately priced books with a few too many cats. This is one of the few late night stops off the Broadway strip that is more interesting than your average bar. The staff is typically more sass than helpful, but that is part of the attraction. Their actual collection of books is great for fiction and general paperbacks. The history and science sections aren't fantastic, but are usually well represented. And the cats...There are a lot of cats running around and the place sometimes reeks of cat pee (usually more so in the summer). Books good, cats bad. more

rad store 8/21/2005

Twice Sold Tales is a Seattle institution. With several locations, there is a good chance they will have what you're looking for at one of their locations. This is a great store for either browsing or going with a specific boo in mind. They have great prices and a decently helpful staff. more

Twice Sold Tales 8/18/2005

More books than a cat can swat at—literally. This place is filled with books and cats alike. Upside: makes for an interesting shopping experience. Downside: it stinks! It smells like cats! Anyway, Twice Sold Tales seems to have almost as good a selection as a new bookstore, with prices half as high. more

Books, with a side of cat pee 8/16/2005

An enjoyable shopping experience, for the most part, but occasionally the store's various cats stink up the joint. This used to be a big problem in the past, but seems to have been less of an issue later. The staff can be sassy, but are generally well-informed on the various books they have in stock. You do have to check all of the bags that are big enough to steal a cat in - apparently this does happen. Those who are allergic, be wary. more

Twice Sold Tales E John 8/14/2005

Twice Sold tales is a medium sized book store that buys and sell used books. This is your run of the mill used bookstore. It has a selection of contemporary literature, art and history. All in all a fairly well rounded used bookstore not specializing in any particular genre of books. The Capital Hill location is open until midnight Saturday through Thursday so it lends it self to some later night book browsing. Outside on the sidewalk you can find some great bargain titles. more

fascinating used bookstore on the hill 7/28/2005

Twice Sold Sales is a neat little independent bookstore that mostly sells used books. Great selection and prices of used titles, and there are several cats lounging about the store. Very cool! The store is open late and I believe all night on Friday nights, providing a nice alternative to bars/clubs. I've stumbled across used copies of books that I couldn't wait to get home to read. Professional, courteous, and helpful staff work there, and if you have any questions, they're more than willing to provide assistance. more

It's a 5! 7/4/2005

What things do you tell people about when you want to convince them that you live in a much cooler place than they do? Twice Sold Tales is high on my list. it's got the cat elevated freeway, it's got the well worn feel, it's got the books, not to mention the best author recommendation shelf in town. Too bad it's not open all night the way it used to be. Nevertheless, Twice Sold Tales is the queen of Seattle book sellers. Long may she reign! more
