Toast - average to good food in a dirty hole! 3/29/2008

I have been coming here since they opened. This is when they had great service, a clean restaurant and stayed on top of their game. Now I eat at Toast few and far between because of the horrible slow inconsistent service, employees that you are unable to communicate with due to language barrier, but mainly because of the deplorable, disgusting, dirty, going down the hill fast condition that the restaurant is kept in. Yes, the food is average on most items and some entrees are quite yummy. But once you take a look around the sad state of what used to be an immaculate restaurant how can one eat the food not knowing what the kitchen looks like. Seriously, the bathrooms are absolutely disgusting! The walls all over the restaurant are knicked, food and drinks spilled, the couches need to be replaced, the furniture is knicked. The floors have a greasy slimy sticky feel when you walk. Well, it is always crowded and obviously some people don't mind the filth around them. But I would say in that nice area their are so many other restaurants on that street alone to visit. Hopefully, the owner will show up and take a long look around. Clean up your act toast and maybe you will get some of your regular customers back. Pros: Food is consistent! Cons: Bad service in complete filth! more

A Toast to Toast! It's Great! 2/14/2008

My friends and I go to toast every couple weeks, usually for brunch. It's my favorite place for breakfast food, and I love the neighborhood. There's great shopping, etc. nearby on Third and it's right down the road from the Grove. What's great about Toast is all of the options they give you! You can customize your own meal. The scrambles and omelette's are fantastic. They also have a lot of really healthy and organic options which I really like. You can order a turkey burger or turkey bacon instead of beef, and you can substitute salad for everything that comes with fries. Their salads alone are fantastic-- the one that comes with pieces of veggie burger in it is so creative and delicious! I've also been to Toast for dinner, which is good too. It's more like eating lunch for dinner, but for a casual bite with friends it's perfect. Their wraps are great and I love their chicken and rice soup! The option to order the mini-wraps along with something else is really convenient for those who have trouble making up their minds. It is an extensive menu, after all. Try the falafel wrap, yum! The only downside is that it tends to get very crowded on Sat/Sun mornings, but the wait isn't usually too bad. Service is fast, valet is a rip off but what else is new. Parking is never easy on Third. This place is very student-friendly probably because it's pretty cheap and really good, I always run into people I know from USC. Pros: good healthy options, big portions, cheap, fun on the weekends, good hangover food! Cons: crowded sometimes more

Not That Dog Friendly...But Good Food! 2/13/2008

So I planned a whole Valentines day for my husband and our dog. We read from this web site that they give water and treats to dogs but when I asked for some treats, the waiter said that they do not do that. We went there for breakfast around 10AM and the wait wasn't too long. I made my own scramble with sun dried tomatoes, goat cheese, avocados, and turkey sausage with potatoes. It was good but luke warm... I wasn't too happy but I ate it anyway. My husband ordered the tripple berry pancakes which were AMAZING. I want to get those next time. For lunch, order the club sandwich! You will be able to take the rest of it to your office and finish it later on. It's that BIG. All in all we had fun but would only go there if we were in the area. Pros: Tripple Berry Pancakes and the Red Velvet Cream Cheese Cupcakes!!! Cons: No dog treats, food was cold, kinda pricey for an every day thing. more

The food at Toast is OK. Not bad at all but nothing to write home about. Their salads are a good size and their dressings are decent. But 'the scene" is just a bit too much. If that is what you're into, you will love Toast. personally, I'd rather go to Joan's down the street because the food is better and although the lines are long there too, I think the wait is longer at Toast. Pros: Decent food, fun location near the Grove and Third Street shopping Cons: Crowded, Lack of Parking, more

Trendy, Fun & Good Food!! 1/3/2008

Consistently, I have had satisfying experiences at this trendy cafe. Waiting times were minimal and service decent for each of my visits. A great place to have brunch and occasionally see stars. Toast Bakery Cafe has all the ingredients for a cool experience. As a side note, parking can be found on the smaller streets around the neighborhood. more

Not impressed 9/11/2007

I only got a salad but even then I wasn't wowed. The portions were small and the waiter was rude. I'm sure they probably have some decent food but I probably won't return any time soon. If I'm going to wait for a table, I'll go to Doughboys up the street. Pros: Trendy, cool location Cons: difficult to park, average food, rude waiter more

This isn't a place you can roll out of bed and grab breakfast or brunch. The people here are going to be seen. I'd say "trendy" sums it up. The food is good and the wait isn't as bad as it looks. Just expect a waiter to ask "are you soo loving it." This may have been an attempt to coin the next "that's hot" phrase. Overall, i'll return...just wish it was a little more low key. Pros: food is pretty good and you can get healthy alternatives Cons: Wear the latest "it" clothes more

Best Tomato Basil Soup EVER! 8/18/2007

I see the point about "the lame scene of wannabees" - however-I consider myself a PROUD wannabe and I think most people living in the middle of LA are wanting to be something- which is NEVER a bad thing!!!! The Tomato Basil soup is seriously to DIE for!!! The texture is a perfecty pureed, smooth chunkieness and absolutely delicious. The Asian salad is a guilt free double dose of antioxidants that is HUGE and extremely filling. I Have never had to wait long for a table, and the service has always been talkative and pleasant. One of my favorite places to eat- although It is best when it isn't overcrowded, which is rare. Pros: Huge, creative menu. Cookies that come with your coffee, fast service, comfy couches to lounge on. Cons: overcrowded, loud, full of "eyebrow raisers" more

This is my first review on CS so be gentle. Been to Toast couple of times and each and every time was a great experience. Personally, I'm a meat lover, but I tried their Tuscan salad and it really blew me away and wanting more. Portions are big, the staffs are friendly and helpful, services are top-notch. In addition to the the food, the scene is filled with the hip and the cool. If your party has more than 4 or 5, call and reserve a table 45 minutes ahead because seating can take a while. more

This place is over-rated. The staff is too busy trying to look good that they really aren't attentive to customers. The vapid host was not able to seat people at proper tables in order. After the hassles, we weren't in a mood to squish the 3 of us at a table for two. The food was fine. We were lucky enough to enjoy the outdoors and the perfume of the sewer wafting into our noses while trying to eat. Not worth the trouble to eat there. Pros: Interesting people watching Cons: The whole restaurant experience more

Awesome salads 6/12/2007

Just moved to the area and drove down 3rd street to catch a light lunch. I have seen this place packed before and figured I would check it out. Great salads, I'm a fan of the Garden Salad. Service has been on and off. Sometimes we've gotten great service, other times the server was too overloaded with other tables to realize we had been waiting ten minutes for them to run our card. Overall, I've enjoyed this place and will definitely be coming back to try new stuff on the menu. Pros: Great salads, couches you can sit and eat on Cons: Service can be slow during peak hours, the wait can be long on busy days more

Why did they put a boutique in the back of the restaurant?? There is no where to stand as it is when I am waiting on a Sunday, why couldn't they have just added more tables or a waiting area. The service is good but it seems like no one there is a constant. I have never had the same waiter twice. I'm over this place. more

Overcharges on Credit Cards Ignored - Manager says he has can't do anything. 5/9/2007

behrgreer Provided by Partner
Used to love the food at Toast, but after this recent experience, I can't imagine ever going back. A portion of our group's lunch tab was charged to my card, my receipt reads one thing, and the amount charged to my card is almost 25% higher than what I signed and agreed to pay. And I am not the only one. Three other people in our group have the exact same circumstance. SO, the very next day I called Toast and told them they over charged each of us. After telling the story to three people, the Manager who did not identify himself by name, put me on hold just after I said my credit card had been overcharged. When he returned he told me he could not help me. When I questioned that, he then said that I had to call back tomorrow and talk to ?Yossy,? the owner. ( I asked for confirmation on the spelling of the Owner's name and this is what I was given). Frankly from the moment a customer calls saying they overcharged me by as much as 25%, a restaurant or retail store should take the customer's name and number and promise to have the owner call back. I bet if I report the entire charge as unauthorized to my bank , I'll get a call from Yossy. Bottom line, good food cannot overcome disatrous service and customer relations. more
