A warning: if you purchased a ?groupon? type certificate from Double Take Deals which was advertised in the Clipper Magazine (Dec. 2012 ? Jan. 2013, Gresham/Clackamas Edition) be forewarned that you will not get $30.00 worth of food for the cost of $15.00. As you go through the process of purchasing, there is no mention that this restaurant will only allow you to use 1 certificate per table. You don?t actually find this out until after you have paid and printed the certificate ? it is in the fine print. We thought it was just a fluke, because who in their right mind would purchase a certificate for $15.00 to turn around and get $15.00 subtracted off their bill? I guess Tippy Canoe just wanted me to pay for a portion of my dinner ahead of time on line. Needless to say, they would NOT accept both certificates and repeatedly told us that the owner, Shirley, had signs up in the restaurant for the servers to absolutely not allow more than one. It sounded like the staff was threatened in some manner, because they would not budge, even after they agreed how silly it was to get $15.00 worth of food for $15.00! They said they do this so they can get repeat customers ? I?m not sure what kind of customer would come back after realizing they had been taken advantage of though?!? more

$4.00 to substitute a baked potatoe and $1.00 to add onions! are you kidding me??? Only came here because Tad's was slammed. Food not worth the price. Will not be back at these prices. more

I have eaten at Tippy Canoe many times. 4/5/2012

I have eaten at Tippy Canoe many times. The prices have gotten higher, however, the food isn't always worth the price. I have continued to go because I like the location and I like to help local businesses. I will never go back to Tippy Canoe again, though. I emailed the email address onthe Tippy Canoe website for events. I am getting married in June and I thought this would be a nice place for my rehearsal dinner. There is enough space and it is close to my venue. After almost two weeks of waiting for a response, I finally called the restaurant. I spoke with a girl who told me that email address goes directly to Shirley herself, the owner. She took down my name, phone number, and email address and told me she would make sure Shirley got back to me. This was days ago. I have not received a single email or phone call. Apparently Shirley's Tippy Canoe, although empty everytime I drive by, is doing so well that my business isn't worth her time. I feel sorry for the servers who will loose money due to their owners awful customer service and business practices. more

Best food hands down! 4/25/2011

I see folks saying how expensive this place is and I understand. However, this is balanced by having the best freaking homemade food around! Add to it, if you are lucky enough to get Shirley to wait on you, you will have an experience you won't soon forget. Don't be fooled by its tucked in the corner outward appearance. Inside is large and decorated so lovely. Add to it jazz in the evenings and this place is awesome. My favorite is a Sunday morning breakfast. Be fearful of the the truckers or loggers breakfast. My daughter ordered and I swear she got 6 full plates of food!!! Everything we have eaten there is to die for. Made from scratch family recipes. Good home cooking in beautiful establishment. Keep up the good work Shirley! more

Delightful, friendly place with delicious food! 12/12/2010

I live in Vancouver, WA and we were down the Gorge decorating an outdoor Christmas tree and were on our way back, when my Sister-in-Law suggested we stop in for dinner at Tippy Canoe Bar & Grill in Troutdale. So we're adventurous and did! We all totally loved the atmosphere. It's delightfully decorated for Christmas. The staff was so friendly and helpful. And whoever cooked each of our meals was a master chef. We were warned the servings would be generous and they sure were! The Reuben sandwiches couldn't have been better. The Canadian burger juicy and delicious, and the Halibut and fries awesome. Might I add, my strawberry margarita was spectacular also! We sure will spread the word about Shirley's restaurant to all we know (it's worth the drive). The prices match the quality of the food. Splurge and go this holiday to Tippy Canoe Bar & Grill. You won't be disappointed! Kids will love all the cute decorations! more

My opinion 3/30/2010

I grew up in Corbett and had never been to Tippy Canoe. For my brothers 39th birthday we finally went. It was a great experience. Tuesday night we were the only table there. There were a couple people in at the bar but that was it. Since we were the only table our waitress was very attentive and the portions made my husband very happy. I had the grilled Salmon and then the bread pudding they both tasted great. The prices were high but we had got a $25 GC from restaurantcom and that really helped. You justy need to remembe to have cash with those GC. Pros: Great service and great food Cons: Prices more

Tremendous! 3/8/2010

The drive to Troutdale is well worth it to meet Shirley and enjoy a wonderful meal. The food is delicious and plentiful thus justifying the price. For breakfast enjoy the stuffed french toast or seafood omelet. Pros: Fresh ingredients, massive servings, hospitality wonderful more

Disapointment 2/14/2010

We wanted to go out for Valentines day dinner with our daughter and son-in-law, on Saturday, rather than wait till Sunday and fight the huge crowds. Dinner started with 3 salads, and one bowl of clam chowder, delicious. Then our dinners came, 2 prime ribs, one crab cakes, and one grilled halibut, at best they were OK, the twice baked potatoes tasted mostly like sour cream, the carrots and some unknown other vegetable, were nothing special and tasteless, the prime rib was unseasoned, and lacked any flavor. The crab cakes, billed as like served on the east coast, were nothing like east coast crab cakes, mostly breading with shredded crab, and very little of it. And the halibut was OK, but needed tartar sauce to give it some flavor. Then we made the mistake of ordering dessert, cheese cake and bread pudding, cheese cake was pretty good, but not great, the bread pudding was burnt, not sweet AT ALL, in something that tasted like milk, with the flatest whipped cream I have ever seen on top. If this had been an inexpensive dinner I wouldn't have complained so much, but for dinner to be well over $100 before tip, I felt I had to speak up. Pros: Great dinner salad Cons: The rest of the dinner more

Have your order read back to you! 11/7/2009

What started out as a nice family brunch went expensively wrong. My BF and I decided to split a side of bacon - sounds easy enough? No! We asked the waitress how many slices in a side order; she answered 4; we asked for 2 done limp and 2 done well. After delivering our food, then finally our toast, and then after another while, just as I was about to ask, out comes the waitress with plates of bacon. She started to place them all on our table. We looked her and asked what this was? She said 'you wanted 4 orders, right?' We said 'no, we just asked how many slices in a side and that we wanted 2 each cooked different ways.' She said she could take them back into the kitchen and knowing that they can't reuse them, I said 'rather than throw them out I guess we could eat them but we only ordered 1 side'. Well, was that ever a generous mistake!! She freakin' charged us for 4 (FOUR!!!) sides of bacon. When we complained she said she'd send Shirley over to us. Well, Shirley walked right by us 2x. Then when we got her attention she said 'I walked by at the tail end of you accepting them from the waitress so there you go. You offered to eat them not have them sent back so we could reuse them'. At which point, we were all floored. REUSE?!?!?! What the HELL?? My understanding of restaurants is that once food leaves the kitchen and gets placed it cannot be taken back and put out for another customer. In the end, yes, we paid for the FOUR sides of bacon, but will not recommend anyone try them out without expressing this: HAVE THEM READ BACK YOUR ORDER!! Pros: started out good Cons: waitress admitted she was tired and had been off more

Dinner here last night 9/13/2009

I have never written a review before, but felt compelled to do so after eating here (and reading some of these reviews). I pride myself on trying to be objective and have no connection to this restaurant whatsoever. We had heard some good things about this restaurant from friends and wanted to give it a try but after reading some of the reviews posted here I was a bit concerned, to say the least! Four of us ate dinner at Tippys last night (9/12/09). We arrived about 7:00 and the restaurant was very busy. The crowd seemed to be a pretty large mix of people, families, younger couples, a birthday party and some older folks. Our wait for an outside table was about 5 minutes, the hostess was very friendly and informative and explained that all of their dinners were homemade. The overall service was a bit slow, due in part I believe to the large crowd, however we never had any issues like the ones mentioned (an hour for water?) in an earlier post. Our server was helpful and friendly with a good sense of humor. He did forget to bring a beer to the table with our drink order, and had to be reminded. My wife and I shared the fish and chips (we had seen the portions other customers had and decided one order would be plenty for both of us) while our friends had the pork chops and tomato basil linguine. All three dinners looked very nice and were very large portions. The fish and chips were great. The halibut was light and fresh, the salad was very good and the fries appeared to be homemade. My friend (who can be quite picky about food) said his pork chop was one of the best he had ever eaten. The tomato basil pasta was fantastic and also appeared to be made from scratch. We didn?t find a single thing in our three dinners that seemed ?canned or frozen?, all our meals seemed to be freshly prepared. I can?t comment on ?weak drinks? because we just had wine and beer. I felt the wine was reasonably priced ($7.50 for a glass of Oregon Pinot Noir) and the selection good. As far as the food prices go: The pork chop dinner was $15, the fish and chips $18.50, and the pasta dish was $20.95. The prices are a bit high in my opinion and the only reason I didn?t give the restaurant 5 stars. I think this might be a good area for the restaurant management to re evaluate and maybe make some adjustments. There was live music (sax, keyboard, vocals) while we ate that created a nice background for our evening. It certainly wasn?t dance music, but not piped in generic either. Overall a very positive experience. It is hard for me to believe that some of the earlier reviewers, in regards to ?canned or frozen? food,?butter on everything? or ?cold and reheated? actually ate at this restaurant. It almost sounds like a personal vendetta of some sort, which I think is a poor use of this forum. Pros: Great food Large portions Nice outdoor atmosphere Cons: Pricing a bit high Outdoor seats are hard! more

Sooooo disappointing! 6/27/2009

Here are the basics: It took a group of 4 of us over an HOUR to get a simple glass of ice water (which we asked for 4 times!). Then we ordered drinks. Those took an additional 35 minutes to receive. They were EXTREMELY weak and just tasted like fruit juice with excessive ice. We finally got our food order an hour and 45 minutes after we arrived. The food was not as it was described in the menu and two people in our party never got part of their order. The prices were hugely over the top--especially considering the service we received. For such a well-publicized ""local"" place, I felt like a fool spending my money there. I will never return. I highly recommend finding another place to spend your time and money! The Tippy Canoe was a huge waste of a nice Saturday evening! :-( Pros: Nice fireplaces Cons: Horrible service, weak drinks, WAY overpriced more

Breakfast was top notch 6/17/2009

Ok, I am pretty new to the area so I am not related to anyone, don't even know any one from this establishment, and I have only eaten here once. But I was immediately enthralled at finding a wonderful breakfast establishment, albeit a spendy one. My wife's omelet was huge and my own order was perfection. The toast had a generous portion of REAL butter and the homemade strawberry jam was literally the best I've ever had. I loved the outdoor atmosphere in back, although the polished stone seats were as hard as you might expect. The service was excellent and very ""down home"". I will make it out there eventually and see what's up on the dinner menu, but for now I just have to say the breakfast was superb. Just my .02 ?. Pros: Huge breakfast Cons: hard (outdoor) seats more

Great Food! 5/30/2009
