TO low life LISTING this as a 1 STAR 4/27/2009

My friend told me over and over about the food and service and how good it is; and her husband is very picky. I read the 1 star reviews and had second thoughts. First off it is on the Sandy river in a great location, walking inside to a great decor and a friendly sincere welcome. We were a large group and staff went out of their way to make sure we had room AND were comfortable. Service was outstanding, full of concern yet not overbearing and right on top of everything. Drinks were good and far from watered down. The food prices were above a ONE STAR or less restaurant, but where inline for where we were, and then considering the quality far better than Ruth Chris's as an example. The clam chowder was about the best I have ever had, and the rest of the food outstanding and plentiful. And the live music with Ollie made the night. TO THE PEOPLE LEAVING 1 STAR COMMENTS: My suggestions would be that if your only experience is with the $1.99 all you can eat grease ball buffets, palce with no class that you and your trashy friends and selves are used to and the $3.00 a gallon booze you drink straight out to the bottle - THEN STICK with the GUTTER places to eat you are used to and not slam a place with good food and great service. Stay in your slum and review the vermin cluttered joints you are used to with the bums sleeping at the bar. Pros: GREAT SERVICE Cons: Nothing I found more

No retaliation here, just the truth - Save your money! 3/9/2009

In previous posts it states that someone has a vendetta or retaliating against this place. I have not link to this place, I do not know anyone that works there...so now that that is out of the way. more

Can not believe this place hasn't been closed down 2/21/2009

Checking this web site to see what our options near Gresham are, the Tippy Canoe popped up. Having been there recently, and being so disappointed, I can't believe it's still open. Just for curiousity, I scrolled down to read the other fourty some reviews. Among the rants, raves, and warnings of many, there are a random few of an obviously failing, desperate owner. Maybe if he / she sold the place to someone who knew what they are doing, it might just might have a chance. My wife and I have shared experiences with many of the prior reviews, which is why I can't believe it hasn't been forced to close down. For example, extremely high prices, ants on the bar, flies in the open ketchup containers on the dining tables. It's also so dark and reminded us so much of a seedy tavern. The place is very un-family friendly as the entire building is a bar atmosphere. In fairness, the portions are large, but what does it matter when it's frozen, reheated, processed, cold, fatty food ? There's plenty of parking too, because after one visit, you'll stay away too. By the way, what ever happened to customer service ? I am only wasting my time writing all this so you don't waste your money too. I can not believe how expensive the food and drinks were. I would scroll through the prior fourty some reviews before I would give this establishment a try. Someone really needs to teach the owner how to handle and run a restaurant. Pros: parking Cons: terrible food, so expensive, horrible service more

Cozy and quant with excellent food and service! 2/19/2009

There is a lot to choose from on the menu, the portions are huge and very delicious! They are also very generous on their drink pour! The atmosphere is warm and inviting and the servers went above and beyond to make for a pleasant, enjoyable evening! I highly recommend giving Tippy Canoe a try for yourself before believing all the negative reviews listed on here. Nothing I read in the negative reviews were true and quite frankly, they seemed a little far fetched. Maybe a disgruntled ex-employee writing them?!?! Take a drive out to the Sandy River and see for yourself ;-) Pros: food, service, ambience, parking more

Don't waste the drive or the money 1/30/2009

Some friends and I took a drive on the East side, and thought we'd get a bite to eat. One of them mentioned the Tippy Canoe, and I said ""hell no"". He convinced me that by now there must be a new owner, or changes from our last terrible experiences. On our way to the Gorge, I agreed. Well he was right, there were changes - FOR THE WORST! We pulled into an absolutely empty parking lot and thought it had closed. We saw a couple of employees outside smoking, and asked if they were open. They said yes, and this was normal for business. The three of us walked into the dark, tavern (I don't know how they can call it a restaurant). It took forever for the employees to finish their cigarettes and come back inside to offer us the worst service, only overshadowed by the worst food I've ever had. None of our entrees tasted ""homemade"" but the opposite. Pre-packaged, frozen, thawed, stale. Not even heated correctly. (DO NOT ORDER THE CRAB CAKES) I was affraid to ask what was in them, they smelled so bad or spoiled. Insanely over-priced food, very weak expensive drinks, horrible live music catered for the elderly owner that would put the middle-aged or younger asleep. Don't waste your money, or your gas money to get out there. The owner needs to take lessons on what good food and great service is and then teach her employees. Pros: ? Cons: No service, terrible food, VERY expensive more

Had the best time ever! 1/29/2009

I've been going to the Tippy Canoe for some time now and the service, food and atmosphere are still the same. Food is always hot and tasty. Servers are always friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere has changed for the good. Drinks are priced appropriately for the amount of 'drink' you get. Shirley is the sweetest lady i've ever met, well of course second to my grandma, but definitly up there. I bring friends and family in and always recommend the place to anyone that wants a nice, quiet ""getaway"". Oh and on Friday & Saturday they have live music which is always calming and relaxing if you just wanted to have a quiet night out. A definite ***** 5 stars!!!! Pros: alot of parking, happy hour, service Cons: a small drive but worth it more

Disappointment again, sad to see the Tippy sink no sank 1/18/2009

Haven't been to the Tippy Canoe for a few months swearing I would never go back after an extremely bad, cold breakfast served in a dark tavern atmosphere with poor lack of service. My wife and I were on our way back from Oxbow Park, and drove by it on our way home. With no cars in the parking lot at about 5 PM, and was sure it finally closed down and mentioned it to her. She thought she saw lights on and asked if we could give it one more try. We walked in to the same, dark seedy tavern atmosphere. The only others there were a bartender, one server, and a cook smoking a cigarette outside. I said lets just have a drink, but she was hungry. We didn't ask prices, and ordered a crab cake appetizer. As God is my witness, they were the strongest smelling, cat food smelling, poorly presented food I can remember they tasted DISGUSTING ! That was enough for me. My wife struck up a conversation with the server, and things started making sense. She said the good servers quit due to no business, and bouncing paychecks. No Chef ( apparently they can't afford it) untrained cooks in the kitchen, frozen food, vendors calling asking for their money, poor health code practices, and the list went on. The bartender comented on an ongoing ant infestion they can't seem to get under control. Then we got the bill ... $ 29.95 for those crab cakes ?!!! and $ 17.00 for two drinks ?!!! I can't say any more. I wanted to call the next day and talk to the owner, but he/she obviously needs the money more than us. I had to post this truth after about having a heart attack from reading the two below posting very apparently written by a failing owner. Sad to see the Tippy sank, maybe, just maybe a new owner who knows what they are doing might help. Pros: Parking ( do to no customers) Cons: Horrible tasting, frozen - thawed out food, HIGH PRICES, what happened to service? more

Darn Good Food 1/17/2009

Don't miss Shirley's Tippy Canoe. Located just minutes off I-84 and adjoining Gresham. Gorgeous in all seasons. Currently a waterfall as you step out of the car. In the summer, a wonderful outdoor patio that can be rented for private parties. The inside atmosphere is warm and cozy. The food is high quality and very generous in portions. We really enjoy Taco night on Monday and Pasta night on Sunday--priced so affordable. The staff is friendly. Shirley loves her customers and does everything possible to insure a great dining experience. We would highly recommend you give this restaurant a try. Pros: Quality food-everything homemade. Great atmosphere. Easy Parking. Nice Service. Cons: Can't think of any. more

Lotsa great food and atmosphere 1/10/2009

I have no idea who or what these people are that give Tippy Canoe such a bad rating. I have been twice now, once for dinner and once for breakfast. Both times the food and service were wonderful. The restaurant was clean with a warm and inviting atmosphere. The owner Shirley was a hoot! The clam chowder was a perfect thickness and the best I have ever had. The seafood omelet was chuck full of shrimp, crab, and white fish. The fried potatoes were cut thin and the perfect crispness. The sauteed onions made them very flavorful. Prices were a little high but the quantity/quality of food was worth it. I would suggest splitting a meal for $3.50 additional charge (you still get your own soup and salad!) more

Tippy Canoe 2009 1/5/2009

New for 2009 what a great idea starting mid January. Monday nights (5:00 pm til closing) for guys, beers $2.00 & $3.00, well drinks $3.00 add that to the appitizers and you got just what a guy wants after work. Tuesdays for the ladies (5:00 pm til closing) Martini's & Bellini's $5.00 ea. Wednesdays are Wine night (bartenders choice) $5.00 a glass. I think there is good things coming can't wait . I keep hearing alot of buzz about the things to come.....That little canoe may keep floating after all. more

Keep Driving, Biking, Boating. Don't stop. 12/31/2008

The wife and I tried to stop here some time ago as we both have very fond memories of the Sandy River growing up. Newcomers, don't judge the area on this shady operation. This place belongs in an airport where you have no choice but to eat there. Pros: It wont last Cons: price, a general lack of joy more

Guess some myths are true : 12/21/2008

What do you know ? Snowing at Tippy ? Guess is does snow in Hell ! The atmosphere inside was as cold and blizzardy outside. Cold omelete, fatty bacon. What more can I say ? Dark, depressing, overpriced. Fresh seafood? The halibut frozen in my home freezer tasted better than this. Establishment needs to take serious lessons in customer service. Don't bother. Pros: still thinking Cons: fruit flies and ants are part of bar decor more

Tried It Again... 12/15/2008

Made another visit to the ""Leaky"" Canoe and sure enough nothing had changed. So hoped it had improved as the location along the Sandy River had some great potential. But as usual, the service was non-existent, the food was reheated prepared food, and the prices were too high for the quality received. It will be sad to see this one sink, but I'm almost certain it's on its way. Pros: Nice location Cons: Stickly a bar atmosphere, poor service and food more

Rest In Peace Tippy Canoe 12/2/2008

You've got to be kidding me! I just read the below review ( obviously written by a desperate, failing owner) and and had to put my two cents in. I was at the Tippy Canoe recently on a cold but sunny day and sat on this patio. We waited so long before we saw a server, and saw no other guests we wondered if they were still in business. The fire pits are subpose to be a high point but when I asked if they can be turned on, I was told no because their gas bill was too high. Why even have them there ? Freezing we went inside to a dreary enviroment that even looked worse than the outside. Not too pleased about the fire pits, we were hungry and asked to see a menu. WHO DO THEY THINK THEY ARE CHARGING THESE PRICES !!! We split an almost $20 fish and chip that we were promised was fresh halibut. I'm sorry, but as watery and greasy as these were I was curious if they were frozen. The server fessed up and said they get price breaks on large amounts and freeze them off for who knows how long. Come on Tippy Canoe, I would say see you in the summer when the patio will be welcome, but after what I saw after a repeat visit and no other guests in the restaurant you will not make it that long. Don't waste your time or your money. RIP Pros: Makes me appreciate real restaurants Cons: HIGH prices, BAD service, very weak drinks, horrible food, long wait for food more

Something old/something new 12/2/2008

I thought the place was BEAUTIFUL! From the rustic inside to the stone table and firepits out on the patio! They have a full bar outside, a band that plays on the deck(older softer rock n roll) and bbq some wonderful ribs and steaks out there too! Pros: one of a kind experience Cons: a little out of the way more

What a shame 12/2/2008

I want this place to work, from the prices( $ 39.50 for the captains plate$14 hamburger...)To the dirt/sand in my salad to the croutons( had enough grease in them to deep fry a turkey), stale tacos @ the taco bar (TACO BAR?)My fish and chips (Halibut?)were cooked correctly but lacked flavor There is no vendetta against the Tippy Canoe, just people who recognize bad food Gordon Ramsey If you can read this HELP In addition to the"" Low Life"" Sooner than later the Tippy Canoe will go out of business, the above comment and all the ""positive"" reviews are clearly a feeble attempt to up the STAR rating by Drinking buddies of the owner-as one of the MANY low life's,that appreciate good food-go down river to Tads chicken and dumplings for a good family style and up river to Yoshida's Riverview for more of an upscale experience that come with a riverfront view, good food and good service NONE of which the TIPPY CANOE has Pros: Instant seating Cons: overpriced bad food more

The owner should have paid us for eating here ! We will NEVER go back 11/18/2008

I was in this establishment with my wife and another couple on Saturday night the 15th. Taken back by how dark and depressing the atmosphere was, we stayed because our friends had been there once before and said it was prime rib night. After a very long wait after ordering, we finally received our $18.95 plate of cold fatty meat that couldn't have been more than a six ounce cut. My friend's wife ordered crab cakes that were $29.95 and honestly smelt like cat food. We tried to be polite, but asked for at least the rib to be the appropriate size and warm. The server told us she was unable to because their food costs are too high do to lack of business, but offered us a free bottle of wine. We declined, but asked for the bill to be adjusted but she said again she was unable. Looking around, the few other tables were obviously experiencing the same. Our neighboring table demanded to see the chef to complain. She told him there was no longer a chef because the owner didn't want to pay him, and was replaced with a $10.00 an hour cook who couldn't handle it. The chef IS the restaurant, now this makes sense. I still am intending to call the owner and demand our money back, but I am still so mad I am waiting to cool off. Not to mention the boring live music just about put us to sleep. What a shame the Tippy Canoe is such a terrible disappointment. Leaving angry and hungry, we drove down the street to Tad's restaurant for a fantastic meal. A couple of other tables at Tad's were also from the Tippy. If the owner from the Tippy Canoe ever reads these reviews, be expecting a call from me and no doubt many other unsatified guests that will not be back. Pros: please tell me Cons: terrible food, VERY over-priced, dark, weak expensive drinks more

great restaurant on historic columbia hwy 11/17/2008

this was an old biker bar that has been transformed into a nice restaurant. There's a really interesting waterfall across the street from the restaurant and the drive along the Sandy River to get there is beautiful. There aren't a lot of places in this area that has such fresh seafood. We've tried the halibut many times and it's always fresh with great flavor. Bring a friend to split a meal or choose something from the menu that packs up well for leftovers. The portions are huge - way too much to eat in one sitting. They serve most of the meals on platters instead of plates. This offsets the high prices on the menu. It might cost a lot but one entree feeds two hungry people or can even be split up into a couple leftover meals. Pros: seafood, scenic area, large portions, not crowded Cons: high prices more

Waste your money and stomach cramps elsewhere 11/13/2008

I first visited Tippy Canoe during the summer for a wedding reception out back on the patio. The service was slow but the food was good. I got to meet the Chef. Not only was he talented but was quite a looker. I was invited back by a couple of friends last week and looked forward to it. What the hell happened ! (Please excuse my language). The patio of course was closed (due to bad weather). There was no one in the restaurant other than us. The live music I don't think even my parents would listen to (and I am 28). The help looked as old and tired as the decor, except for one little shining light who apparently just gave 2 weeks notice. We tried to pry her as to the vast difference from the summer. Our food was very expensive and very questionable. Apparently the Chef left to save his reputation. She said he was being asked to serve sub standard food that wasn't up to his quality. We heard enough and left. After hearing of unmentionable kitchen pratices I don't think this place should still be open. Pros: ? Cons: EXPENSIVE, dirty, empty more

Best Service, Awesome Atmosphere 11/11/2008

Tippy Canoe has the best service, food and atmosphere. Homey but classy. The employees are a hoot and very nice. I gave this place a chance after reading some bad reviews, and I'm so glad I did.I've had breakfast and dinners there, and everything seems made from scratch. Delicious. I will be a regular customer. I don't usually take the time to write reviews, but this is an exceptional place, with exceptional people. Pros: view, decor, service more
