I have never written a review before, but felt compelled to do so after eating here (and reading some of these reviews). I pride myself on trying to be objective and have no connection to this restaurant whatsoever.
We had heard some good things about this restaurant from friends and wanted to give it a try but after reading some of the reviews posted here I was a bit concerned, to say the least!
Four of us ate dinner at Tippys last night (9/12/09). We arrived about 7:00 and the restaurant was very busy. The crowd seemed to be a pretty large mix of people, families, younger couples, a birthday party and some older folks. Our wait for an outside table was about 5 minutes, the hostess was very friendly and informative and explained that all of their dinners were homemade. The overall service was a bit slow, due in part I believe to the large crowd, however we never had any issues like the ones mentioned (an hour for water?) in an earlier post.
Our server was helpful and friendly with a good sense of humor. He did forget to bring a beer to the table with our drink order, and had to be reminded.
My wife and I shared the fish and chips (we had seen the portions other customers had and decided one order would be plenty for both of us) while our friends had the pork chops and tomato basil linguine. All three dinners looked very nice and were very large portions. The fish and chips were great. The halibut was light and fresh, the salad was very good and the fries appeared to be homemade. My friend (who can be quite picky about food) said his pork chop was one of the best he had ever eaten. The tomato basil pasta was fantastic and also appeared to be made from scratch. We didn?t find a single thing in our three dinners that seemed ?canned or frozen?, all our meals seemed to be freshly prepared.
I can?t comment on ?weak drinks? because we just had wine and beer. I felt the wine was reasonably priced ($7.50 for a glass of Oregon Pinot Noir) and the selection good. As far as the food prices go: The pork chop dinner was $15, the fish and chips $18.50, and the pasta dish was $20.95. The prices are a bit high in my opinion and the only reason I didn?t give the restaurant 5 stars. I think this might be a good area for the restaurant management to re evaluate and maybe make some adjustments.
There was live music (sax, keyboard, vocals) while we ate that created a nice background for our evening. It certainly wasn?t dance music, but not piped in generic either.
Overall a very positive experience.
It is hard for me to believe that some of the earlier reviewers, in regards to ?canned or frozen? food,?butter on everything? or ?cold and reheated? actually ate at this restaurant. It almost sounds like a personal vendetta of some sort, which I think is a poor use of this forum.
Pros: Great food Large portions Nice outdoor atmosphere
Cons: Pricing a bit high Outdoor seats are hard!
