Still horrible food ... 11/1/2008

I'm not a computer person, and haven't written one of these before, but after reading the posted review on ""outstanding breakfasts"" , I had to spare you all. I haven't been back to the Tippy for a few months after spending a crazy amount of money for horrible food and service, not to mention the Saturday night live music was aimed at the 60 year old + crowd. Never having been there for breakfast, thought I'd give her another try since I was out on the motorcycle passing by. I walked in to the same dark, dreary place with me and the bartender the only ones in there. I was hungry so I stayed. BIG MISTAKE !! My eggs were not cooked right, my bacon cold and fatty, and my hash browns burned on the outside and cold in the middle. He apologized but it wasn't his fault. In an economy where money is tight. don't waste it here. Cons: Dark depressing atmosphere, overpriced bad food, neglecting service more

Outstanding breakfast 10/27/2008

Based upon my visit on 10/26/08, I can only assume that the only other reviews of this establishment are vendetta-based - they certainly have no bearing upon the reality I experienced. Walking into the restaurant was a comforting, welcoming experience. Tastefully decorated for Autumn, the wood tones and river-themed sculptures blended beautifully with the pumpkin-colored table settings, making the act of sitting down at a table like going to Grandmother's house for Thanksgiving. Being immediately greeted and seated by a waitress who left no doubt she'd seen and heard it all and knew exactly what she was doing added to my confidence that my party and I were in for something special; we were then personally greeted by the owner Shirley who expressed sincere appreciation of our presence. Pros: Good parking, excellent food & service, live music on weekends Cons: Couldn't find any more

City of Troutdale, PLEASE close this place down !! 10/17/2008

We thought third time would be a charm, but to our surprise it got worse ! Upon walking in to an absoutely dead restaurant / bar on a Friday night we decided to at least have a drink. While at the bar for a weak, very over priced drink we thought we might share an appetizer. While waiting, we over heard employees talking about barely passing the health inspector eariler in the week, ants in the kitchen, and how they we sick of their pay checks bouncing. We stopped a kind looking server and asked who the Chef was. She explained he jumped ship in fear it was going under. Then arrived our expensive crab cakes, we looked at each other and the smell reminded us of cat food. We politely asked for our check and could not get out of there fast enough. WHY is this place still open ? Cons: potential health hazard more

Someone's Boarded the Crazy Train 8/21/2008

My boyfriend and I went to Tippy Canoe for drinks by recomendation of a few of my coworkers. An evening at the Tippy Canoe seemed like an evening at Cheers, and upon walking into the joint my man and I felt instantly out of place, based mostly on the stares that we were gettting. We are big tequilla fans and asked the bartender what types they had available. We were quite excited that they indeed had our favorite, Patron Silver. When we asked how much it was a shot and the bartender responded $15 a piece, we thought it was a joke, but he did not find our comments the least bit humorous. I mean its only $45 for the bottle. Ive ordered Patron Silver at Deer Valley Resort in Utah, which is super hoytie toytie and it was $6 cheaper, and the ambiance was way better. As a first time customer I was not the least bit interested in going back. Definitely not the way to build local clientel. Pros: Location is ideal Cons: Way over priced more

Plan to Fail 7/17/2008

What a beautiful restaurant in a gorgeous location. From the looks of the place, I would have high hopes that the food would be good. I'll never know because I wasn't able to afford anything after ordering drinks. Apparently, I'm use to the reasonable happy hour prices that most establishments offer. The best way to stunt the growth of a restaurant after the newness has worn off is to serve, from what I understand lousy food at a price the average working class person cannot afford. If they would like their business to grow and succeed, it would be a good idea to pull in the after work crowd from the local area. I don't see this happening with their drink prices and the overpriced menu. Too bad. We'll see how long they last. perhaps they should sell some of the $5000.00 stone tables out back so they can lower there prices Pros: good location Cons: way, way, way over priced (did they do any reserch on what people want?) more

Cool Setting No Soul 4/23/2008

We love Tippy Canoe! 4/4/2008

For starters, the telephone number on this site is not correct. For a reservation call 503-492-2220. We have eaten breakfast 4 times and dinner twice with positive results. We have a reservation at Tippy for this evening to celebrate two birthdays. The breakfasts are tasty with large portions and great for us to split. Even when we split we have home style potatoes to take home. We have found the prices in line with fine dining restaurants in the area. Our dinners have been excellent and prepared with care. The wait staff are always eager to please and the chef willing to make changes for a restricted diet. The musicians, Friday and Saturdays, Ollie McClay and Craig Bidondo are wonderful. They perform easy listening music for all ages. Since this restaurant has recently been re-modeled and opened under new ownership, there are understandably kinks to work out. It is exciting to have Shirley with her years of experience and energy (just a kid in her 70's) working hard to have another fine restaurant along the Sandy River. The outdoor eating area will be very inviting this summer. Pros: Ambience, live music Fri. and Sat. Lovely setting along the Sandy River! more

Gotta Love Those Catfood Cakes 3/29/2008

Its comparisons to tuna fish are unfair to tuna. It really ought to be compared to ground .99c cat food; that would be a better description. I had heard the reviews said they were bad, but considering there was little on the menu for under $25, I decided to go ahead and get them at $14.50 a plate. I received three dinky cakes, probably the size of a silver dollar and a dollop of mayo. Yum. I had to order extra lemons to get the taste out of my mouth then go to the grocery store for food afterwards. Not only is every menu item guaranteed to keep the meat industry in booming business (they are big on steak and pork slabs), the prices are exorbitant, ranging from $25 to $40. My friend got a salad. It appeared the croutons had been soaked in lard. I tasted one and almost threw up. Unfortunately the server failed to bring a napkin so I had nothing to expel it into. Pros: Alcoholic floor show; Music; Romantic if your date fishes and wears hip waders and Carharts, and I'm not being ironic. Cons: Catfood cakes (unfit for cats), croutons, no napkins, toilet seats, PRICES more

Bad restaurant with a bad identity crisis 3/25/2008

It's a bar and grill. It says so right on the sign outside. The place is dominated by a huge bar. Every table is set with kitschy oversized mugs. There are notably drunk people in evidence. Clearly it's meant to be a casual neighborhood place. So why, when I sit down, am I handed a fancy-looking menu in a little leatherette book, while the waiter goes into a five minute spiel about every item listed? Why do the prices start around $25? And why has no one told the short-order cook in back that he's supposed to be a fancy chef now? Because the food sure ain't chef food, whatever the pricing. I can't add anything more to what's been said by others other than to reaffirm that, yeah, it's that bad. Had the same experience with the mouth-burning, can't-clear-the-nasty-taste crabcakes. The only positive is that maybe for a while having another restaurant on this stretch will make it a little easier to get a good table at Tad's--until everybody has their requisite bad experience here and figures out not to go back. Or maybe the owner will figure it out and change the menu to food they can actually prepare well at reasonable prices. But probably not. Pros: Umm... plenty of parking? Cons: Inedible more

WORST food ever, STAY AWAY!!!!! 3/22/2008

I wish I had read the reviews before going. I thought there was finally a local option for great seafood. Hah--more like chum. Unlike other reports, our service was ok. The food was the problem. They made a huge deal over ""hand cut"" steaks that were like thin Winco specials, and quickly became overcooked sitting on the ""sizzling platter"" they were served on. But nothing compared with the crabcakes. As others have said, it was all I could do the rest of that night to try to get the taste out of my mouth. Absolutely disgusting. You'e better off w/ the 2/$3.99 frozen ones from Trader Joe's (which are bad, but still way better than this). This is cheap, bad food, poorly prepared, and sloppily presented--and they charge you a fortune for it. I could not believe the bill. How can the owner not know this food is horrible? We should have refused to pay based on the slop we got, but I just wanted to get out of there. Most of the good reviews seem to be for lunch and breakfast, and maybe those are better (assuming the reviews weren't written by the owner). I'll never know, as I'll never go again. I heartily recommend no one else does either. It was bad enough that afterwards I looked up their health inspection record--also poor. Just stay away. Pros: None--you don't even get a view of the lovely setting from inside Cons: Horrible, horrible, horrible, horrible food more

HUGE, HUGE Disappointment 3/15/2008

A review in the Outlook led me to believe this had been transformed into a family friendly establishment with a special connections guaranteeing great seafood. That is exactly wrong. Pros: ??? Cons: Horrible food at high prices more

Huge breakfast- try the corned beef 3/2/2008

Although I have heard a lot of complaints about the ""new tippys"", I found a friendly staff, with generous portions of really good food. However I understand the prices are much higher than they used to be- but keep in mind that the old tippys was falling apart - maybe the cheap bear had something to do with that..... more

Shirley's Tippy Canoe 2/24/2008

What a major mistake! We were looking forward to an upscale tavern, but found instead a restaurant with dreams of becoming an elegant place on the river. But if the service which was poor, and the food which was anything but good are going to be the standard the dream will never be realized! We had fried shrimp which had the shells left on...what an unpleasant surprise to bite into. Oysters that had to have been flatened with a brick to be so flat and a beautiful piece of halibut that was ruined by spices that burned the lips and mouth....the waiter knocked a fork on to the floor and just kicked it under the table. Portions of each dinner were left off the plate. The wait between being seated, and being served was long, the prices were extremly high for the quality and service. Pros: Beautiful View, Cons: Food and Service more

DO NOT BOTHER:( 2/21/2008

Waste of time and $$$$ 2/10/2008

I read the reviews on the website to friends and we decided to go anyway last night. Big Mistake! Pros: None! Cons: Poor service, overpriced food, over cooked (black) carrots, poor tasting food more

Terrible Food, Terrible Service 2/7/2008

The service here is terrible and the food isn't any better. I went here with friends for lunch and Shirley herself waited on us. She was all business, no smiles. I ordered a hamburger and fries and after quite a wait (there weren't many people in the place) I got my order. The fries were greasy and limp and when I bit into the burger, it was raw in the middle. Since I couldn't track down Shirley or any other waitperson, I pulled the patty out and just ate the bun, lettuce and onions - that part was good. When Shirley finally came by to give us our bills I pointed out the raw burger on my plate. She snatched up the plate and said, ""You should have said something earlier!"" and walked away. We were stunned. I called her back and explained that we couldn't find a waitperson, but that she may want to tell the cook about the raw hamburgers. She walked away, saying over her shoulder, ""Yeah, I'll be sure to do that!"" When I went to pay, I requested a discount on my meal and she refused, saying again I should have said something earlier. By this time I was angry and said I would tell all my friends about the terrible food and service and she said, ""I'm sure you will, I'm sure you do this kind of thing all the time."" I have to admit, Shirley is pretty good - she can serve a customer a raw hamburger and make it seem like the customer's fault! Bottom Line: Don't go there. Spend your money where the food is good and the owner actually wants to please the customer. more

Still have the bad taste of the crab cakes in my mouth! 2/2/2008

Funny how different people will have different opinions. Ours is BAD about this place, if it were just about the main dishes that'd be one thing, but the sides were horrible also. We had the crab cakes with salad, fries and limp toast. The crab cakes tasted like a bad Stouffers Stuffing mix, the fries were limp, cold and undercooked, the salad, although mixed greens, were gritty and only had croutons on it. The other dish we had was the deep fried crab special with an underbaked twice baked potato. Due to the deep frying, the crab shell was too soft to open and get the meat out of; we're hoping after refrigeration at home we'll be able to open the shell. Oh, and the dishes were way over priced...$25 for three little Stouffer cakes! We recommend you go to Yoshida's across the river - same price, better food. more

LOVED IT! 1/27/2008

What a great surprise! We had dinner there last night for the first time and didn't know really what to expect. The menu is quite extensive with generous portions. We had oysters and halibut (both fresh)...the guys had all-you-can-eat oysters! Food was great with excellent service. Will be going back very soon! more

Highly recomended! 1/24/2008

We went yesterdy for the first time and were pleased. The servings are large with salads that aren't just the usual lettuce with a little shredded carrot, it had lots of veggies and several lettuce types. We both had the lunch fish and chips which were perfectly cooked with larger servings and not just of the fries, there were 4 good size fish filets. We will be going back to try breakfast and dinner. Something to be aware of they serve most breakfast items until 5 pm which is great. Dinner servings start at 5:30. The prices are not roadhouse prices, but then this is no roadhouse. Any place which serves lamb chops and bone in rib eyes upto 60 oz is a restaurant and from the taste of things, one to be enjoyed again and again. But it wan't expensive either our check for two huge fish and chips platter, side salads, three beers and two wines was under $50.00. The atmosphere is woodsy and warm. Pros: Food quatily and choices more
