Really cool place 2/11/2007

Previous reviews caught my attention...thanks for the advise! Yup, this place is realy cool. I will be brief... -Door men can be jerks, but they let you slide if it's your "first time". Guys should wear shirts with shoes, no kicks -Drinks average about $10. -Eclectic crowd. F/M ratio was good. -Plenty of space to hang out. -Music can get old after 20 minutes...there is only so much of 1920's music one can take. -Decor is very impressive! -Smokers will enjor smoking area...super unique. -Parking not too bad. $5 a little south of Main & 2nd st. Great place. I will be back very soon. Pros: Decor, People and lots of room Cons: Dress code. more

Absolutely the most unique bar in Souther California but horrible doormen 2/9/2007

I went to the Edison a couple of times and it was great. The interior is amazing and truly one of a kind. The crowd is young and trendy, the drinks are good, and the place is not crowded like the typical bar/club in hollywood. Its roomy with plenty of room for seating. Its a good place for a large group. I went last weekend with a large group, most of whom where from out of state. I was eager to show my friends this unique bar only to learn there was a strict dress code. It was a requirement to wear a long sleeve buttom up shirt. One friend was wearing a Lacoste polo and would not let him in. My other friend was wearing a long sleeve sweater and he too could not get it. Prior to this night I really liked this place, but after this experience I don't know if I would go back or even recommend it. Really upscale clubs in Hollywood do not even have a dress code as strict as this place. This place is nice but the staff at the door completely ruin the experience. If you decide to go, (for the guys) you might as well wear a suit if you don't want any trouble at the door. Without the door staff I would rate this place an "A." Because of the door staff, I would rate this place a "F." Pros: Unique decor and good crowd. Cons: The worst door staff who won't let guys in unless their practically wearing a suit. more

Coolest interior of any bar in L.A. 1/30/2007

I have to completely agree with the previous reviewers. This bar has the most amazing interior I have seen. It's spacious but not crowded, not too loud, eclectic music selection, unpretentious people, old movies projected on huge screens on the walls, and very upscale. The only problems, which are mostly minor, are lack of parking in a scary neighborhood, weak drinks, no photography allowed, and no place to dance. I will be back to this very cool place. Pros: Great atmosphere, not loud, very large inside, good music, lots of nice areas, not too much VIP/reserved Cons: Weak drinks, no parking, very slow to get a drink - they should add a side beer bar or something more

As of the New Year 2007, the coolest spot in Los Angeles, hands down. 1/21/2007

Just one of the coolest interiors you will ever see. The coal bins, generators and furnaces have been kept intact, in a huge basement room , with 20 foot high ceilings. Two huge bars, cool jukebox and also a small stage for bands to play. the only drawback is the massive size. Even with the cool factor and downtown renassaince, I see them having a hard time filling this place up Pros: Incredible interior, friendly staff Cons: NO PARKING for a still scary neighborhood, suprisingly weak drinks more

A Breath of Fresh Air Downtown-who knew? 11/11/2006

I attended the grand opening of the Edison. It is beautiful and fun without being snobby. Eclectic mix of people, awesome drinks and the atmosphere was unbelievable! It's more obscure than any place in Silverlake and more trendy then any Hollywood bar, but its not pretentious at all. I am going back again for sure! Pros: beautiful and suprising atmosphere, eclectic mix of people, good drinks Cons: sometimes a line at the door more

Unlike any other LA spot 11/10/2006

I attended an event last night and I am so happy I decided to venture downtown. One of the most unique venues in Los Angeles, the Edison Bar is a spatial and visual delight! The vibe is industrial, artsy and eclectic. I had the pleasure of dancing, drinking and feasting in a crowd that was unpretentious and knew how to have a rousing good time. My advice is to GO, the loft dwellers downtown shouldn't be the only people in the know. Everybody should make the trek to what is a fantastic spot. Tell your friends, drag your co-workers...you'll be glad you did. more

Downtown's lounge-life evolution continues in a historically refurbished, turn-of-the-century boiler room.

Owner Message
  • With the opening of Andrew Meieran's new industrial cathedral, Downtown is once again the place to be in Los Angeles. The Edison presents a marriage of refined industrial architecture and art deco chic - a world class lounge that retains the mechanical artifacts from its history as downtown LA's first private power plant. The grand staircase spectacularly descends into the depths of the historic Higgins Building. The Edison revitalizes the art of the classic, hand crafted cocktail with house specialties designed just for the space old-school bourbons luxuriously transformed with a house made lavender & honey infusion. A small, upscale menu of food and drinks. The Edison offers a respectful nod to LA's famed nightlife that haunts Ciros & Coconut Grove and continues to punctuate billiards. You can also enjoy an early evening retro juke box for nightly Cocktail Hours.

Editorial
  • A throwback to Hollywood's Golden Age, this underground haunt is without a doubt one of the coolest places in Los Angeles. (Sort of ironic, considering it used to be a boiler room.) Located near Harlem Place Alley--core of L.A.'s early 20th century music scene--the sprawling downtown space is old-school glam done up right. The 1910 Higgins Building's original structure remains intact, with many of the historic architectural elements still around. (Even the enormous central power generator is visible through a glass wall.) Think of it as a living, breathing museum where handcrafted cocktails flow, pretty people mingle, ceilings soar and the attitude remains squarely at the door. (Sometimes the bouncers can get a little uptight, but hey, this is downtown, after all.)
