Nice! 4/26/2012

The owner is a great guy and the bartenders are very skilled and friendly. They get drinks quickly, socialize even when it's busy, and have a great time doing it. more

Bad Food Bad Service- Why would you? 12/30/2011

Spent a few times here for cocktails and food. Cool place with lots of antiques and old time history but.... dealing with the bad service along with food that tastes like it came from a vending machine is something else. Why would you spend $100 or more and end up chasing down the waiter (or worse-complaining at the bar because you cannot find the waiter)- endig up with food (calamari that tasted like it was soaked in salt) and cheese bread (most likely made 4 days prior)?? Sorry Barbara, but your company is going downhill fast. Best sort it out before he CLOSED sign is posted. Spend your time and money somehwere better. With all the choices in LA....why would you??? more

Bad Bad Bad 11/11/2011

BAD BAD BAD ........ Disgusting food, horrible service, very very very rude staff and the mangers tops it. Security guards are bunch of nasty people. They made $500.00 out of our table and treated us in a worst way possible. Would never go back there and I DO NOT RECOMEND any one to go. more

"Stepped back in time" 10/18/2011

Went here on a weekday; Didn't have any trouble getting in or any problems with the dress code. Great place for a drink or even a romantic date. I do admit that the bar service is a little slow. Great atmosphere, feels like you stepped back in time. Would recommend to friends to see. more

Cool decor, but forget about conversation 7/21/2011

This is a really hip spot and fun to experience once or twice. But if you're on a date or really wanted to relate to the people you are hanging with you'll have to scream all night and probably won't get very far in getting to know them better. more

No specialized service, all crowds, all scene 3/28/2011

The typical crowd at this place is very mixed. There's the afterwork corporate types, the headshot types, the Jersey Shore types and yes, Steampunk and Vintage scenesters do show up. In order to get service, seating or anything remotely convenient at Edison you have to make a reservation or come extremely early. Anyone who shows up here after 9:30 expecting elbow room and a quick drink is going to have a terrible night. Bar service can take a long time. Food comes out relatively quick, but their wait staff is often overwhelmed. The ambiance of this place is unique and esoteric with an early 20th century bohemian theme. Ask for specific tables at least a week in advance when making dinner reservations, as spots closer to the floor show allow for no conversation. They sometimes have burlesque acts, sometimes live bands and sometimes DJ's. If you enjoy swing or couples dancing, there is the occasional night for that. Look out for the guys who hang around the bar - some of them are slimy 50 somethings who think it's ok to grab women by the elbows. The Green Fairy who comes by with Absinthe shots is uber cute, but be forewarned that the shots are weak. more

Great Place but service non existend 3/13/2011

It is worth it for the ambience and decor. Dress code important and that is a blessing. Even if you go earty say 9 pm on a weekend you have to struggle to get a drink, as for food .....forget it. Do not go there hungry. I wonder how Edison can make money since the bar is solid blocked by some people that do not move away from it, no visible servers, and most of the people do not hold drinks in their hands. If you are late after 10.30 pm there is a block length line outside while the inside is packed anyway. So good luck. Bottom line is worth to see it once and that is it. more

the experience is good - but that's about it 12/30/2010

The edison is a very cool place to experience. very dark, goth ambience. but I was charged 10 dollars for someone to take my backpac and place it on the floor 2 feet away from where I was standing. when I said I didn't want them to take it they told me I was not allowed in. I pointed out that 5 people just passed with their backpacks on and they didn't get charged. they could have cared less. whatever...welcome to L.A more

Crap Service -- Don't waste your $$$$!!! 10/24/2010

"Horrible, Horrible, HORRIBLE!" Great ambiance, horrible service for what you pay -- They don't care about service, just $$$ Got a table and paid over $700 -- they still wouldn't let my two beautiful girl friends in because "no one told them in advance" yet they were letting people in left and right.... powertrip?? Took 30 minutes from drink order to drink service and half the time WE NEVER GOT DRINKS!!! So then we went to the bar instead and STILL NO DRINKS. I walked away after 25 minutes because, really??? C'mon people, you are not THAT busy. You have plenty of time to wait on the same person 5 times because waiting on me once. Servers thanked us for being patient while they screwed up (basically everything) and then when I asked for them to help get my two friends in, they turned 180 degrees and said they couldn't help..... definitely will NEVER go here again, you shouldn't waste your money either!!! more

Coolest Bar in L.A. 7/22/2010

I love this place! The decor is amazing as is the vibe. Definitely the place to dress up 20s style and go for a few drinks. Lots of excellent choices of Absinthe as well. Would recommend getting a table, that way you avoid the hollywood types at the bar and can enjoy the music and appetizers in peace. Book a week or more in advance and pay attention to the dress code. Pros: Music, Atmosphere, Absinthe, Decor Cons: Patrons more

Still the go-to bar downtown 3/12/2010

Bouncers here can sometimes be rude regarding the dress code, so be forewarned. That said, it's nice that guys and gals look good inside the bar. Thugs stay outside. Very beautiful decor inside. Great looking crowd, although financial types have sort of ruined it a bit lately. Pros: Best design in LA Cons: Dress code sucks more

Overrated 2/19/2010

you are welcome to this phony hangout. overpriced and unwelcoming, I was not surprised to see plenty of poor saps lining up to pay inflated prices. got poor service at bar and was glad to leave. Pros: Got out without a fight Cons: run by thugs more

good place, good music, nicely-dressed crowd 11/28/2009

Interesting, unique decor, very cool music, especially Willie' McNeil's band is fun and entertaining. Once you're in, you're pretty much on you own. Nobody will hound you for drinks, although the "absinthe fairies" carting the classic absinthe service around are appealing, even if the absinthe itself is not. Pros: Elegant, Interesting Decor, Cool Music, No Cover. Cons: parking downtown. more

Burlesque Wednesdays 10/30/2009

I've been a fan of the Edison since it first opened, but its appeal faded after a year or so. I recently went back for the burlesque circus on Wednesday nights and... DAMN. Entertainment is incredible, the crowd dresses up and the drinks never miss, although you may wait for quite a while. If you're looking for a refreshed sense of the Edison - go on Wednesday nights. Pros: Burlesque Troop more

Great place for a date 10/8/2009

The food here is eclectic and absolutely amazing. It's good for a romantic date or even meet friends at the bar. I particularly enjoyed the belly dancer show she had a python in her act. The service was amazing well worth the prices. Pros: Sexy belly dancer Cons: In the Center of Down town La more

Ruined evening 9/12/2009

I just got turned away from this stupid club because of my attire. I'm supposed to be there for a birthday party. My knit shirt from Nordstroms "doesn't have a collar" and the bouncer didn't like my shoes either. Do ya think I'll ever go back there? Pros: ? Cons: Inflexible more

Classicism 9/3/2009

I've been told this place is full of rude staff and ridiculous costumers and now I can confirm this, spend you money where you will be treated like a person, there much better places nearer by. Pros: Great if your into class war and like to play dress up more

How to be a bouncer, stand by door, be rude 9/3/2009

At 7:10pm I arrived at the Edison for my friends birthday get together, I had sneakers on (I had just come from work) And had missed the dress code cut off by 10min so I left but because my friends are better people than the management and door man at the Edison they finished there drinks and left as well, most never to return. Pros: cool building Cons: The people who work there more

Downtown's lounge-life evolution continues in a historically refurbished, turn-of-the-century boiler room.

Owner Message
  • With the opening of Andrew Meieran's new industrial cathedral, Downtown is once again the place to be in Los Angeles. The Edison presents a marriage of refined industrial architecture and art deco chic - a world class lounge that retains the mechanical artifacts from its history as downtown LA's first private power plant. The grand staircase spectacularly descends into the depths of the historic Higgins Building. The Edison revitalizes the art of the classic, hand crafted cocktail with house specialties designed just for the space old-school bourbons luxuriously transformed with a house made lavender & honey infusion. A small, upscale menu of food and drinks. The Edison offers a respectful nod to LA's famed nightlife that haunts Ciros & Coconut Grove and continues to punctuate billiards. You can also enjoy an early evening retro juke box for nightly Cocktail Hours.

Editorial
  • A throwback to Hollywood's Golden Age, this underground haunt is without a doubt one of the coolest places in Los Angeles. (Sort of ironic, considering it used to be a boiler room.) Located near Harlem Place Alley--core of L.A.'s early 20th century music scene--the sprawling downtown space is old-school glam done up right. The 1910 Higgins Building's original structure remains intact, with many of the historic architectural elements still around. (Even the enormous central power generator is visible through a glass wall.) Think of it as a living, breathing museum where handcrafted cocktails flow, pretty people mingle, ceilings soar and the attitude remains squarely at the door. (Sometimes the bouncers can get a little uptight, but hey, this is downtown, after all.)
