Superb service and wonderful appetizers 1/9/2006

I didn't know what to expect considering the mixed reviews, but we had a wonderful dinner. The service was excellent (by far the best we have had) and the food was very good. The appetizers were better than our main courses (but the main courses were very good as well). The chicken dumpling appetizers are AMAZING! more

Smoke and Mirrors 12/20/2005

This is the biggest ""smoke and mirors"" restaurant I have ever dined in. There is lack of clarity and focus on the menu. It appears as if the business owners randomly pulled ingredients out of a hat, added on some ""power"" names for pizzazz, then slapped on a hefty price tag to make a quick buck. Maybe the longer the item's description, the higher the price that can be charged. Definitely a restaurant for fools or braggarts who are too dumb or proud to admit they made a mistake falling for hype. Cons: Food, Service, Price more

Susanna Foo ~ Don't Believe the Hype!!!!!!! 12/7/2005

We tried Susanna Foo this past weekend & after hearing the rave reviews, I thought we were in for a treat! There was a good-sized group of us, the waitstaff was indeed phenomenal. But, the venue was very loud and made it difficult to hold a conversation and the tables and patrons are crowded. Unfortunately by the time we sat down (we had a 7:30pm reservation on a Saturday) the chef was already out of the fish entree I wanted to order. I asked the waiter if I could substitute any other fish but keep the rest of the order (looking forward to the delicious-sounding sauce I'd chosen), and was informed that the chef would not do this. So, since I was holding up the rest of the table I made a quick decision to go with something completely different (scallops) and ended up giving about half of it away. Pros: Great Waitstaff Cons: Too Many to List more

Foo-ey on Foo-d 10/25/2005

Susanna Foo is a beautiful restaurant with a French-Chinese fusion menu. Appetizers are $10-16; entrees $22-29. I was expecting and outstanding meal, but was extremely disappointed in the food. The room is very pretty, lighting romantic and the atmosphere very pleasant. I ordered crab trio ($16) and short ribs ($27). The crab trio consisted of a crab spring roll was teeny with little filling and not very tasty, a crab cake, crab in the center, covered with tiny bread cubes and deep fried, and crab salad, that was 90% potato salad topped with three pieces of crab. Tasteless. The short rib was the size of a six-ounce fillet plus broccoli rabe (very bitter) in a sauce. The dish was pure disappointment. Although the meat was very tender the sauce was bland. Service was outstanding. I would not recommend Susanna Foo and go to Chinatown half a mile away. Pros: service, atmosphere Cons: food more

Loss of identity 10/21/2005

To me, the hostess and the waiter play a major part in setting the first impression of a new restaurant. It's a shame that neither failed to set a good impression. The hostess not only failed to greet us, but sat us in the smoking section and without confirming with us. The food was just 'okay'. Surprisingly the portions were quite generous. However, the dishes lacked 'character', 'identity'. They tasted like a whole lot of mix of Asian (Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Indonesian, etc.) all mixed in together. My idea of fusion is 'creating a new' from a traditional, not 'losing by fusing'. I am sorry to say but I probably will not dine in this restaurant again. It is not everyday that I feel the urge to complain about a restaurant, but I was not impressed with the food NOR the service at this restaurant. Pros: portion Cons: service more

Mailing It In 9/20/2005

Susanna Foo's is really mailing it in for restaurant week. I've had better Kung Pao Chicken on an airplane; forget about Chinatown. I won't be back. more

HUGE disappointment 9/12/2005

Had dinner last week as part of a corporate funtion. The atmosphere is dim and a bit dingy. Several self congragulatory pieces on the wall with assorted dollar store artwork, aside from which the decor is unremarkable. Portions were very small and not tasty in the least. A request for a vegatarian option instead of the lamb on the menu was met with open hostility and ""Mary"" asked me if anyone else would like that option. I have no idea why she thought I could speak for 41 other people. However when my stirfry tofu (no, I wasn't asked if I would care for tofu) was served, another party at the table asked to replace the lamb as well. They could be more accomodating to paying customers. Horrible experience that lasted much too long. Not one of the four courses served was even worth mentioning. Cons: Rude Staff, Lack of selection more

A Delicious Fusion of French and Chinese 10/14/2004

My fiance and I dined at Susanna Foo at the spur of the moment. I have always wanted to dine here and our experience was wonderful. We were seated immediately and our waitress was everso attentive. She explained the menu thoroughly and the other staff took great ""care"" of refilling our glasses and clearing our table. We had hot and sour soup as appetizers and they were good, but not great. The main courses were spectacular. My fiance had Pad Thai and I had Filet Mignon with Herb and Pepper Sauce. Amazing. The meat was perfectly cooked and each piece melted in my mouth. Finally, we had Warm Chocolate Cake with Belgian Chocolate Ice Cream. The best dessert I had in years. A perfect ending to a great meal. I highly recommend Susanna Foo! Pros: Food, Dessert, Service more

A Depressing experience 9/30/2004

Don't go there for restaurant week. We got bad service and it was very rushed. Though a manager came over and offered me a complimentary dinner at a different time, and I thanked him for the apology, he then announced that he WAS NOT apologizing, just EXPLAINING the situation. I was quite nonplussed and won't even go back for free. more

Disappointed 5/15/2004

Went there for a birthday dinner with a party of six. For the relatively high prices, it was a disappointment. Didn't see too much of the orgininality mentioned in the many reviews. Waiter was way too pushy in terms of having us order too much food. Desserts were an unexpected surprise in terms of taste, originiality and presentation. went to Bistro St. Tropez the following night with a nother party of six, spent half the amount but with better food and mjuch better service. Pros: Great desserts Cons: , Pushy Service more

a jem 5/9/2004

this is truly a dining experience. everything on the menu is unique and sumtuous. the decor is elegant and the service is impeccable. its a bit pricey, but worth it for that special occasion! Pros: excellent food, great service, unique dishes more

Amazing! 11/24/2003

I had a wonderful experience here! The server was very gracious and attentive. The menu items were interesting and the food was very tasty. Even the less expensive stir fry items seemed to be lovingly put together. Everything was beautifully prepared. I can't wait to come back! Pros: Food, Service, Ambiance more

NOT authentic Chinese food 5/21/2003

As a Chinese-American, I had high hopes for my first meal at Susanna Foo. What a disappointment! The cuisine should absolutely not be billed as Chinese food or even Asian food. French/Fusion with most of the emphasis on French would be more accurate. Although not bad, the food was ok+, and it was not even remotely authentic Chinese food. For example, ""risotto"" was just a ball of short grain rice, the kind ubiquitous with Korean and Japanese cuisine. For some reason, the chef saw fit to heavily sweeten the rice, creating a bizarre flavor. Finally, thank God I did not have to pay for this meal. The prices far exceed the actual level of the food, with very small portions to boot. Pros: nice decor, pretty good service Cons: NOT Asian cuisine, expensive, small portions more

They good but... 4/25/2003

They use frozen peas and carrots which takes away from the true value and taste of the meals. If they would use fresh vegetables which reflect the high price they charge I would appreciate this restaurant even more. Pros: good ambiance Cons: frozen vegetables more

this is the most overrated restaurant in 3/11/2003

I do not know who keeps mentioning this ordinary restaurant in listing Philadelphia's fine restaurants, but it is a fraud. Susanna Foo may be a nice lady with good P.R. skills, but her kitchen turns out beautifully prepared food of such ordinary taste as to make the diners wonder why they are paying so much. I have eaten here three times, and every time wished I closed my eyes and picked a Chinatown restaurant at random. Pros: Excellent service, attractive room, impressive menu Cons: ordinary and bland fo, outrageous prices, small plates more

foo's gold 2/14/2003

having only been here once, i thought i'd share my experience. eating here during a party/banquet type of setting, i found their menu adequate. their food was sparing at best (small portions galore) but i already expected this before entering the restaurant. service was top notch. it didn't really get much better than this as i had waiters and waitresses at an arms length at any time. i would recommend for romantic dining on a whim, but nothing more. Pros: romantic, location, tasty Cons: small portions, bad parking, expensive more

Yummy 1/20/2003

I've been here twice. I was so excited about the food. So rarely I taste anything quite as good. The portions are perfect. I went through appetizers, dinner and desert and left not feeling bloated nor hungry. The harp player upstairs was romantic, as was the ambiance, which made for the perfect Valentines Day evening. Though the downstairs has average decor and did not make for a romantic evening in the least. more

French Chinese Fusion 1/19/2003

Remember when you are dining here, this is not to be compared to your local take-out down the street as this is a French Chinese fusion. In all honesty, this has been the best meal I have had in Philadelphia. The food was spectacular - we had ordered half of the items on the menu. Every bite was full of just the right texture and flavor. Our waiter paid attention to every detail and I could not have asked for anything more from this fine-dining experience. more

worst meal ever 1/11/2003

it is chinese you can and do get everywhere else, dressed up to try and justify the inflated prices. susanna cares only about her own purse, not your satisfaction. food tends to be greasy, while service is stuffy and slow. go to the golden empress on 5ht and bainbridge...so good, and nothing is mroe than ten dollars, or go to suannas where the cocktails start at $12 more

foo-foo prices 1/3/2003

great food but way over-priced. For half the price but same quality try Mustard Greens. more
