Not exactly what we had in mind! 8/16/2011

Anyone who has anything to do with preparing and serving food in the UK takes great heed of the words of the restaurant critic A A Gill in the Sunday Times. ""Good food with bad service presents itself as bad food"" Such an epithet can surely be placed fairly and squarely on the shoulders of the proprietors of Shilo's We arrived six handed without a reservation (not a great idea) , to be told that they could accommodate us but it would be 30 minutes wait. Fair enough. 60 minutes later and counting we were ""fortunate"" enough to be led to a large table for 8. Only to be led back to the waiting area, as there was some confusion about whether the table was already taken or not. We finally sat down and was greeted by, well, nothing. A waiter en passant said that they were very busy and that he would give us his full attention in 10 seconds. I think he meant 10 minutes but I wasn't in the mood to argue, and I don't think he was either. When he eventually did arrive there was no explanation of the dishes on the menu just what was off the menu. Sort of Faulty Towers ""the veals off' moment, without the comedic genius of John Cleese. Just substitute chicken for veal and you get the scenario. A kosher eatery with no chicken equates to a Starbucks without coffee! We all agreed on something simple to eat with the exception of one member who ordered a plain Kobe burger, stipulating plain, plain and even plainer. You guessed it, it came with all the trimmings. Waiter to diner ""well we are busy,we are trying our best"" obviously not at listening. It did eventually arrive plain adorned with a miserable smirk from the messenger. All food tasted fabulous but not sure what the 6 condiments, placed before us in little dishes were, I suppose it would have been nice to know, but that's a bit too much to ask at Shilo's. To add insult to injury the table was cleared before one of the party had even finished eating, perhaps it's a French custom I have not come across before. Forget the high price, forget the high quality steaks, forget the obligatory 18% service, forget even the lack of car parking space. Go there for one thing and one thing alone, to taste the heady mix of superb kosher food, repugnant service, and French indifference , that leads to an unforgettable evening for all the wrong reasons. more

An Amazing Experience! 8/26/2010

When it comes to fine kosher dining in Los Angeles, no one pulls it off quite like Shilo’s. 1. Service – I really feel welcome when I walk into Shilo’s, they always seem to go out of their way to satisfy each customer. From their pleasant mannerisms to their great advice regarding menu selections, they genuinely want to ensure I have the best dining experience possible. 2. Food – I honestly have never tasted food like the treats served up at Shilo’s. I especially like how the head chef comes up with creative ways to mimic “forbidden” food in a kosher way. Take the Bleu Cheese Burger for example – I HAVE SIMPLY NEVER TASTED A BURGER LIKE IT. Even the bun looks like it was created for this burger! Add a Kobe patty, fake bacon (or pastrami or whatever it was, IT WAS GOOD!!) and that amazing imitation Bleu cheese! Dude, I can’t believe the bad press I’m seeing on here regarding that Bleu cheese. Do you folks react the same way when eating yogurt? Because it tastes sour? Or how about Swiss cheese? Come on people! It’s SUPPOSE to taste like that. It’s not for everyone! But coming on here and calling it “old and moldy” – please – it’s not even real cheese folks…I don’t think mold will ever be an issue. I guess the point I’m trying to make is that it’s a kosher restaurant with an amazing head chef that designs his menu to offer unique tastes to the Jewish community. 3. Food – Sorry, I need to speak a bit more about the food. Head on over and get a Kobe steak (be sure to order it the way you like it done), you’ll thank me later! 4. Misc – I’ve gone to social gathering there and I’ve closed business deals there. The owners are always so warm and gracious. They make you want to come back – and I always do!!! more

Great restaurant! 8/25/2010

I went to this place a week ago with some friends and totally recommend it , they have a great variety of appetizers and I was amazed with the wonderful flavors; the service was fast and great. We were fortunate to have chef Katsuji coming to our table, he even explained the way the appetizers are made and I have so much respect for the creativity that chef has on putting all these amazing food together. Then the chef made us some ice cream from scratch right on our table that was quite an experience! We had an awesome time!! more

great food, ..great ambiance..a great Chef 8/23/2010

I loove this restaurant. If I was asked to go out for dinner, Shilos would definately be my first choice. Not only is the food soo tastey, you get great service!!! The ceviche is great , not only one type there are three different ones that iv'e tried and tested over and over again. The Baby back ribs and cowboy steak are soo tender. My hubby realy enjoys the blue cheese (parve) Burger, it is unlike any other burger youve ever tasted. The surf n' turf is something out or the ordinary as well, I would deffinatly recomend it. The Chef is amazing, he will go to table after table letting you test out his different, and new items that aren't listed on the menue. Ive been there over and over again, and have always been satisfied, overly satisfied!!. Not only have we gone out alone, we've gone out with freinds and my hubby and freinds even made me a surprise party there..It was wonderfull..Thanx Katuji!!! more

Best Kosher restaurant in Los Angeles 8/23/2010

I went to Shilohs for my girlfriend birthday and it was an amazing experience. First, we had really good original appetizers, the tarte flambee and the scallops, then my friend had the blue cheese filet and I had the cowboy steak ( i'm really a meat lover ;-) ). It was great for both of us, the addition of the blue cheese truly enhance the taste of the delicious filet and my cowboy steak was tender and very tasty. At the end, the waiter brought us a very good chocolate souffle with a candle singing happy birthday for my friend. I thought it was nice delicate touch.\r \r Overall, I would recommend Shilohs to anybody who loves great food in a great ambiance. more

Repulsive, Expensive, Expired Meat 8/20/2010

The other day, me, my mother and my sister decided to try Shilo's. We ordered two hamburgers and a steak. The meat of the hamburger was smelly and tasted literally like trash. I couldn't eat it past the third bite! The check ended up to be $73, which is absolutely ridiculous! We took the food home and my dad happened to eat it too. He got food poisoning and was throwing up for an hour straight. As well as that, I got diarreha and my sister and mother got stomach aches. I will never ever go back to that place, not only because of the food but also the service. It took the waitor a long time to bring us our drinks and once he brought it there was a fly in my water! You may all think I'm joking but it really is the truth! more

Love this place 7/9/2010

I don't know what the person who wrote before was talking about, because my husband and I and all of our friends think Shilo's is amazing. The chief is always trying new and interesting dishes while keeping the favoriates around. I have enjoyed many of the steaks and would suggest the blue cheese (parve) steak or the archetta. Both are great! Also love the appetizers! The petite couisse and tarte flambe are definately worth trying. I have always enjoyed the civiche and if you want to try something really unique try the surf n' turf. We have always had excellent service as well. I can't say anything about the apple dessert but if you like bananas then definitely try the bananas foster. We have been going here for nearly 3 years and never had any kind of flies in the resturant, and we have been there at all times of the day, not just the evening when its dark or wtvr. To make a long story short, this really is an exceptional restaurant whether you keep kosher or not. more

Will never go back 6/30/2010

Where to begin. The margarita tasted like it had absolutely no alcohol in it whatsoever. Just margarita mix and something indeterminate. When we questioned why it tasted funny, we were told that they don't have any liquor, it was made with white wine. We sent it back. Awfully pricey for a drink made without hard liquor, even with the impressive dry ice floating on the top! That's when we started noticing the black bugs flying all around our heads. They were larger than gnats, smaller than flies, and suddenly I realized that I had had the exact same flying bug problem 2 years ago when I was there last. I can only surmise that, since we were there during the daytime, the bugs were more obvious to us than they would be to diners during the dimly-lit dinner hours. The mushroom eggrolls were cold and tough. The ceviche was boring. The kobe hamburgers were great, though, and I guess that the meat is where they have their corner of the kosher market. That, and it is lovely inside. We ordered 2 desserts. Apple Crumb and Rhubarb Something-or-Other. My friend dug into the apple one first and said ""Wait, there are absolutely no apples in this."" I took a spoonful and it was possibly the most vile thing I've ever eaten. I wanted to spit it out, but instead took a big swallow of wine so that at least that bad taste wouldn't be the note with which I ended the meal. We sent the apple one back. Not one person came over to ask why the dessert was sent back. It was suggested that they already knew how bad it was! The rhubarb one also had no fruit that I could distinguish except for a sour taste--I guess that's what passes for rhubarb. We just left that one not eaten. We're not in the habit of sending food back, although we now have a little more practice. Our server could not even stay at our table long enough to finish his rehearsed half-sentence. I figured out why when we got our bill. 18% is added automatically for larger parties. I have no problem with that. I have a problem with dismissive ""service"" - I use the term loosely. Had the service been as stellar as the prices, we would gladly have tipped 20%. I am now reading a review and it says ""the young owners are welcoming and pleasant."" Perhaps they were on vacation. Too bad--they missed us playing ""catch the gnat."" Pros: Decor Cons: Bugs more

Best Kosher in CA 6/14/2009

All of Pico/Robertson know that Shilos is the #1 Kosher Steak in CA, and by far!\r I'm more of a lunch guest and I just love it there!. The lunch menu is very different than the dinner with very good prices and good food.\r Pros: Food and Service more

Editorial review from GrubHub 10/30/2008

Was not impressed with their "lean cut" steak, very fatty and rubbery. The Ahi avacado stack was pretty good, but the lightly grilled Ahi had the texture of an eraser and was flavorless. Too overpriced for the quality you are getting. more

Stars and Actors Favorit 10/29/2008

I do not know if you seen the photos on the back but Demi Moore, Ashton, Bill Cristal, few Mayors and a lot more do eat there weeky.\r This place has been around for almost 3 years ?? and nobody told me about it!! I told the owner (very friendly and modest) they should be the top rated SteakHouse in LA.\r The special of the day changes every week and its from a different country every single time! now I can eat all over the world without using my privat jet...\r Pros: Specials Cons: Location more

The best steak restaurant! 8/31/2008

I've had a lot of steaks, and these are probably the best, even better than more expensive non-Kosher ones. Choose the Laredo Log Steak (lean thick cut). Also the chocolate mousse is the best I've ever had (and I've had quite a few)! Also, the fresh, hot bread served at the beginning is the best anywhere. The prices are not cheap, but also not as expensive as the quality of the food. Lunch is cheaper and excellent. Pros: Steaks, desserts more

Shilos, great place, amazing deserts 8/30/2008

If you are looking for a koshersteakhouse with style go to Shilos. I would not recommend the chicken but any steak is usually amazing. Avoid the cowboy sauce if you're not a fan of heavy sauces. I would definitely go there for deserts, it is unique and kosher. Pros: Kosher, deserts Cons: expensive more

Shiloh's keep going up!! 3/27/2007

there just is something about there steaks that make me dream about steak more and more...\r On a serious note, the food is fantastic. the young owners are welcoming and pleasant.\r What more can ask, maybe for them to open an other one closer to my home?\r \r \r Pros: Great food, great atmosphere, great service more

LA's Rock'n Steakhouse 3/27/2007

Shilo's Kosher Steakhouse is one of the best restaurants in Los Angeles. It is an intimate, modern steakhouse with pleasant staff, who enjoy entertaining and celebrating special moments with their guests. There is an array of steaks to choose from whether you are looking for something lean or something a little heartier, with various delicious sauces to choose from as well. My favorites are the Cowboy Steak and the Chopped Salad and the great thing, from my frequent visits, is they have daily specials with a variety of appetizing steaks, fish, pastas, appetizers, and salads. Though it may be a bit cozy, owners mentioned that they are in the midst of expanding. I can?t wait for my next meal at Shilo?s! Pros: Cowboy Steak, Chopped Salad, and Tuna Tartar Cons: Can't think of anything more
