Food was fine, and the place is pretty cool, but the waitstaff was slow and pretty clueless. Worst of all was the rude bartender. Ordered a $9 rioja from the WInes by the Glass me...

Great Date Spot 1/18/2009

With Tapas on my mind i looked for a quick fix to my craving in the Union Square area. A quick search later i found Pipa, a rustic bohemian meets grand ballroom feel with tasty and reasonably priced fare for all. The chandeliers and unfinished ceilings make the feel both comforting but still high end. The staff was attentive and courteous. My favorite was the shrimp tapas. Making an online reservation was totally convenient and the prices were totally reasonable. I impressed my date and felt like a savvy new yorker. Take a chance and check out Pipa. Pros: ambience, price, food, service more

The food is outstanding and the atmosphere is lovely. The size of the restaurant, the menu and wine list, and the quality of service give it a very european feel. Everything we ordered for dinner was wonderful, and simply, but beautifully presented. The servers was available if we needed them, but they did not overrun our dinner checking on us. The focus of dinner was the food, wine, and my company, not the pomp and decor of the restaurant. I very much appreciate that. more

delish! 11/19/2008

My favorite restaurant in New York City. The food gets better and better every time I go. the ambiance is perfect for a date but yet great to go with girlfriends or a large group. They also have the top 3 best sangria in the city. more

Good FUN! 11/10/2008

This place is awesome with friends, for dinner, drinks and lots of sangria. We ordered a good amount of small plates and enjoyed the red and white sangria which was absolutely delicious. The food is not too heavy and absolutely delightful. I would recommend making reservations because it is normally crowded. The ambience was nice, although the servers aren't equally as friendly. It is really lou din there so I would not recommend taking your date there after 8 on weekends. Pros: GREAT food good fun more

Perfect Ambiance 10/6/2008

Just thinking about Pipa makes me smile. I have been here several times and it is the one restaurant in memory that I can say has surpassed my expectations every single time. The Arroz con pollo is phenomenal and I can eat everyday. Their entrees have always been exceptional- simply prepared and perfect. Our last meal there ended with a dessert that I've been craving ever since. I have always been happy with the service. The wait staff probably errs on leaving you alone more than some may be comfortable with, but I'm rather easily irritated by staff who are constantly asking if I need anything. The decor is romantic and welcoming and exactly the kind of space that makes eating enjoyable. I will certainly return here again with high expectations. One of my favorite simple restaurants in the city. Pros: ambiance, service more

Perfect romantic dinner! 7/30/2008

The tapas we ordered were all wonderful, the service was good (although not noteworthy), and the room has a very romantic ambiance. The bacon-wrapped almond-stuffed dates were my favorite thing. I went there for dinner with my boyfriend on a Saturday night. Although we didn't mind, the tables are very close together. We split 6 tapas and one dessert, which was the perfect amount of food for us. And surprisingly, for the amount of delicious food we ate, plus wine and coffee, we thought the price was very reasonable. Pros: Ambiance, food, good location Cons: Tables are close together more

Once and a while it's ok 6/17/2008

hard to tell with this place. I'd advise no weekend trips when all the young 20's daddy's girls go to it prior to going out....well if you are a guy it wouldn't be that bad. However the tables are small and you are packed in there. If you get a seat to the wall, forget it you can't get to the bathroom. Plates come fast and randomly...whatever is done first comes. You will be rushed out if it's a busy nite. Oh and hope you are good of hearing b/c it's loud. Pros: Steal stuff on the wall Cons: 'OMG I'm cool!' more

Wonderful experience 5/28/2008

The ambiance is great: dark lighting, exposed brick, and beautiful for-sale chandeliers hung from high ceilings. The food we had was fantastic. Great chorizo and honey-glazed calamari. The steak flat bread and ham croquetas were delicious as well. With just these 4 tapas dishes, my date and I were stuffed, and it cost us less than most other dinners of this caliber in NYC. Thumbs WAY up! Pros: Great value for great food, flexible with reservations Cons: tight seating more

it's ok, pros and cons 5/10/2008

I like Pipa, but there's so many drawbacks, I don't go very often. I like the food, despite the limited menu. They really should consider adding more tapas and variety. The ones we have tried have been very tasty. For the people complaining about the small portions - these are tapas, not entrees! They're typical tapas size. For two of us, we usually get 4, which leaves us satisfied. The service has usually been below average. Slow, not super friendly, they drop your food off and don't return to your table throughout the whole meal. To get a refill on drinks is always a challenge. And it is very crowded, tables much too close. The bar area is set up in a way that it leaves very VERY little room along the bar, and it's often so crowded you can't get to the bar or move. The decor is very pretty, which is one of my favorite things about this place. Obviously the location is good, too. Dont go out of your way to get here, but overall its a decent meal. Pros: decor, food is good Cons: service is poor, tables much too close/crowded/cramped, wait despite reserv's more

Bad Business 5/8/2008

A couple of friends and I wanted to enjoy drinks and tapas outside. However, we were informed by both the hostess and then the manager that it was dining only outside- and that there was a minimum of tapas per person. We were going to order a few appetizers, but didn?t want to commit to a certain number since we weren?t that hungry. There was NO ONE outside, so we offered to sit outside but go back in if it filled up. The manager was completely inflexible and refused to make any kind of accommodations for us. So we left and had a lovely time (and spent a lot of money) at L?Express. By the way, I was here last summer and definitely sat outside and only ordered drinks (delicious mojitos) so I don?t know why service has deteriorated so much. This place definitely does not reflect what the atmosphere of a tapas place is supposed to be like. more

  • Pipa is Spanish slang for having a good time and the people of New York are doing just that at Pipa Tapas y Mas. Innovative tapas, flavorful sangria and specialty cocktails, a bustling bar scene, great music and countless chandeliers set the scene at this enchanting location.

Editorial
  • The Scene
Inside, the restaurant feels almost tent-like. Entering the candle-filled space is like opening the doors on a gypsy hideaway.

    The Food
The traditional and interpretive tapas throw a sharp focus on the definitive themes of Spanish cuisine. Few styles of cooking place such an importance on texture--baby eels in a sizzling slick of oil, for example, is nudged just a shade away from pasta by the crackle of tiny bones under your teeth. Garlic is another constant, with its fascinating range of application throughout a meal--from subtle background agent to aggressive palate-prickler.
