Food was fine, and the place is pretty cool, but the waitstaff was slow and pretty clueless. Worst of all was the rude bartender. Ordered a $9 rioja from the WInes by the Glass me...

For a relaxing time, go somewhere else! 11/16/2007

My friend and I went on a Wednesday afternoon (6pm). There was lots of seating, so we were promptly seated. I must say the tapas choices were limited. We ordered and did get our food promptly (again, not very crowded). The food was OK, nothing special. I did feel it was overpriced, but I was there to enjoy conversation, not for the food. Well, once we were done, the waiter kept on coming back. We felt pressured to keep on ordering, so we ordered dessert. Once we were done with that, the waiter just plunked down the check. We kept on talking until what I'm assuming was the manager came and offered to "buy us drinks at the bar". On seeing our perplexed faces, he said he needed the table and basically kicked us out. Perhaps if it was a weekend, I could understand, but it was a WEDNESDAY!! Very rude. I do NOT recommend this place at all. I will never go back. Bad customer service. Pros: Ambience Cons: Rush to get you out more

A Fantastic Time Was Had by All!!! 11/3/2007

I went to Pipa with a large group (I believe there were 25 of us) and we were seated and served promptly. The ambiance is beautiful, perfect for a first, second or, for that all important, third date (*wink wink*) . The tapas experience is so much more enhanced when sharing it with good friends. This is a great place to go with friends or to entertain out-of-town guests, as I was. The neighborhood is great for a lovely New York evening. P.S. Try the shrimp potpie. Awesome! Pros: Amibiance, FOOD and Tapas! Cons: Sangria (not the best) more

Come for the Tapas, Stay for the drunk guy acting like a rooster 8/31/2007

On a recent office outing we went to Pipa and had an excellent time. The service was seemless, and the food and the sangria was to die for. The calamari was so tasty that we had 4 orders of it, and the sangria flowed like the Nile. Later on in the night some guy decided to act like a rooster and started crowing in the middle of the place. Not really sure why the guy did this, but it was entertaining. The same guy also proceeded to eat prawn eyes, and eat the brains of the prawn (a delicasy in China). On a side note this place is also excellent to celebrate a briss. I would like to end with a shoutout to Mother Hen, cluck, cluck, cluck. Pros: Excelent food and service Cons: Very cramped seating more

Summer at Pipa 8/14/2007

After multiple visits to Pipa, I felt compelled to drop a line or two. Unlike someone remarked before, their selection on tapas is very wide and appealing. I usually take a table outside, and service has been always very solid and consistent, maybe bacause I always get the same polite, fast and attentive server...After living in Europe for a while, the food and hospitality of this place makes me feel a little nostalgic...Only once I had a problem with my mojito, but my waiter was more than helpful in resolving the situation...Try the Paella, it is a must since the really use Bomba rice !!! Pros: paella, waiter, outdoor seating more

GREAT AMBIANCE< SERVICE 8/14/2007

I was there on A Friday Night, weeks ago, and had a blast....Super friendly, smily waitstaff, very receptive and accomodating... and to be honest we were not an easy group to deal with!!! We took over a huge communal table, nearby the bar, and even though the area was extremely crowded, the servers went an extra mile to ensure that we were having a good time...Food was all right, and sangria, out of this world...I will be coming back with more friends!!! Pros: servers, location Cons: crowded more

Walked out 7/31/2007

Even after 10pm on a Saturday, all they had was outdoor seating which is cramped and right on the street. I'd wanted to come here bc the space is very cozy and pretty, but the menu was ridiculous. I've never seen such a limited tapas menu. Nothing sounded appetizing and as a vegetarian i was basically limited to potato leek soup. My friend who eats meat was equally unimpressed so we walked out before ordering. Prices are very steep and hosts unfriendly. This place would be better for just drinks at the bar. Pros: atmosphere Cons: everything else - odd and limited menu more

Inexcusably bad service 7/11/2007

Awful service, rude waiter who insulted our intelligence and ignored us unless he wanted to push drinks on us all while being seated under a dripping a/c unit. Pass! Pros: cute place Cons: horrible service more

Terrible Service 7/2/2007

I was there yesterday and it was crowded for a Sunday evening. We had to wait longer than usual for the waiter to show up to get our menu. We ordered white sangria and good thing we didn't order the pitcher because it was awful. I had a bad heache the rest of the night due to the cheap wine used in the sangria and it was way too strong. So while we sipped on our drinks, it took more than 20 minutes for our first tapas to arrive. Then the 2nd one came out about 10 minutes later and it took another 20 minutes for the last 2 tapas to arrive. It was painful having to wait for so long and what made it worse was the the table next to us who was seated after us had all their food while we had to wait. And the tapas was nothing interesting. We would never come back here. It was just awful. Pros: None Cons: Bad Service more

  • Pipa is Spanish slang for having a good time and the people of New York are doing just that at Pipa Tapas y Mas. Innovative tapas, flavorful sangria and specialty cocktails, a bustling bar scene, great music and countless chandeliers set the scene at this enchanting location.

Editorial
  • The Scene
Inside, the restaurant feels almost tent-like. Entering the candle-filled space is like opening the doors on a gypsy hideaway.

    The Food
The traditional and interpretive tapas throw a sharp focus on the definitive themes of Spanish cuisine. Few styles of cooking place such an importance on texture--baby eels in a sizzling slick of oil, for example, is nudged just a shade away from pasta by the crackle of tiny bones under your teeth. Garlic is another constant, with its fascinating range of application throughout a meal--from subtle background agent to aggressive palate-prickler.
