Food was fine, and the place is pretty cool, but the waitstaff was slow and pretty clueless. Worst of all was the rude bartender. Ordered a $9 rioja from the WInes by the Glass me...

Bad Business 5/8/2008

A couple of friends and I wanted to enjoy drinks and tapas outside. However, we were informed by both the hostess and then the manager that it was dining only outside- and that there was a minimum of tapas per person. We were going to order a few appetizers, but didn?t want to commit to a certain number since we weren?t that hungry. There was NO ONE outside, so we offered to sit outside but go back in if it filled up. The manager was completely inflexible and refused to make any kind of accommodations for us. So we left and had a lovely time (and spent a lot of money) at L?Express. By the way, I was here last summer and definitely sat outside and only ordered drinks (delicious mojitos) so I don?t know why service has deteriorated so much. This place definitely does not reflect what the atmosphere of a tapas place is supposed to be like. more

Wonderful decor 4/9/2008

Lovely chandeliers all around the restaurant. We went on a Sunday when they had live music. Tapas was very good -- very large portions which was unexpected. Would return. Good for large groups. Pros: Ambiance, large portions, live music more

Meh, this place is just okay... 3/14/2008

Went here with a friend on a Wednesday night. The place was jammed. I highly recommend making reservations if you're planning on going during prime dinner hours. Since we did not have reservations, there was a 45 min wait for 2 ppl. We were told we could wait at the bar if we like. The bar was JAMMED. I would not suggest getting a table near the bar b/c the bar overflow will be right on top of you, knocking into your chair. We decided to make the best of it and get drinks and catch up on some girl talk. An hour later, we still had not been called for a table and people that had came after us were being seated. I walked up to the hostess and she claimed she didn't know b/c she wasn't there when I gave my name. She said she would ask the other hostess. Neither of them ever came back over to give me an update so after another 15 min I walked back over and asked what was up. Miraculously, our table was 'just ready'. I don't think they're very organized at the hostess desk and taking reservations. It was quite obvious our name we had given when we got there fell through the cracks somehow. As far as the food goes, it's just alright. Not a whole lot of selection, nothing really 'wowed' me on the menu, it's a bit overpriced, the portions are small, and the food came out luke warm at best. The wait staff constantly hovers over you and snatches the plate out from under you before you've gotten the last bite from the plate into your mouth. It makes you feel like you're just a bunch of cattle being herded in an out instead of having an enjoyable dining experience. more

Never Again 2/7/2008

I've been to Pipa twice and will never return. The first time was on a Saturday and it was really crowded. The tables are really close so you are practically sitting on top of the person next to you. I went again last night. The server came by 5 times to ask if we were still working on the plates that had food on them. Then the manager came over and asked if he could by us a drink at the bar so we get up from the table. There was no one waiting for a table when we got to the bar. They were trying to rush us out of there for an hour for no reason. Don't waste your time, food is ok, service is terrible. Cons: Service was rushed more

I LOVE this place! 2/5/2008

Sure... more for the vibe than the food but.... I lived in Madrid for some time so I love a spanish restaurant with nice crowd to match. Sundays are my days ( I can't account for the others) where I've noticed the people are laidback, open and friendly. They even bring in a Salsa band for live music. Love it. more

I read the review about the service and I have to agree.. there's a blonde waiter (male) working for this place who's pretty cold and is always in a rush. But try to stay around the bar and you can avoid the "server" problem all together.... If they can take care of that service issue they get 5 stars from me. more

Small portions not worth the price 12/27/2007

Food is mostly good. The main problem is that the portions are so small that they redefine the word tapas to mean 3-4 servings a person will still not fill you up. That, 12 dollar drinks, and service that would get a subway train conductor fired make this an experience worth skipping. more

Total bummer, service ruined experience 12/4/2007

This is the second time i've been to Pipa and after the first time, i couldn't wait to go back, but after this time, it will be a while before i go again - if at all. The food is very good, however, yesterday i brought in a group of clients to entertain for lunch and we had a group of 8. It was not crowded in the slightest bit and our server was TERRIBLE. I was a bartender at one point in my life and i'm usually very forgiving for bad service if the person is at least giving it a full effort, but he obviously was not. His attitude was terrible and he was not friendly at all. One person in our group had questions about the menu and it was as if we were annoying him. I dont know if he didnt care b/c he knew he would be getting the 20% gratuity for a party our size or what, but i've always been one to tip extra for good service and i did not yesterday b/c he ruined our meal. I dont think it was as big of a deal for the rest of the group, but to me - as the person picking up the tab - I will not look to Pipa to entertain a large group again. There are plenty of other places that would love the business. The whole experience was terribly disappointing Pros: good food and ambience Cons: service was so bad i wont go back more

Tasty Tapas 11/23/2007

Living in Spain for a year has turned me into quite the Spanish tapas snob but I must say that Pipa went beyond my expectations. I was expecting a trendy, loud restaurant with watered down sangria and sub-par tapas. While the Sangria was a bit weak, the tapas were really tasty and more authentic than most ?spanish? restaurants in Manhattan. With some of the best tapas I have had in NYC, and a bill that does not put a dent in your wallet, I will be happy to return to Pipa. Pros: Tapas, ambiance, fun Cons: crowded, watery sangria more

For a relaxing time, go somewhere else! 11/16/2007

My friend and I went on a Wednesday afternoon (6pm). There was lots of seating, so we were promptly seated. I must say the tapas choices were limited. We ordered and did get our food promptly (again, not very crowded). The food was OK, nothing special. I did feel it was overpriced, but I was there to enjoy conversation, not for the food. Well, once we were done, the waiter kept on coming back. We felt pressured to keep on ordering, so we ordered dessert. Once we were done with that, the waiter just plunked down the check. We kept on talking until what I'm assuming was the manager came and offered to ""buy us drinks at the bar"". On seeing our perplexed faces, he said he needed the table and basically kicked us out. Perhaps if it was a weekend, I could understand, but it was a WEDNESDAY!! Very rude. I do NOT recommend this place at all. I will never go back. Bad customer service. Pros: Ambience Cons: Rush to get you out more

Owner Message
  • Pipa is Spanish slang for having a good time and the people of New York are doing just that at Pipa Tapas y Mas. Innovative tapas, flavorful sangria and specialty cocktails, a bustling bar scene, great music and countless chandeliers set the scene at this enchanting location.

Editorial
  • The Scene
Inside, the restaurant feels almost tent-like. Entering the candle-filled space is like opening the doors on a gypsy hideaway.

    The Food
The traditional and interpretive tapas throw a sharp focus on the definitive themes of Spanish cuisine. Few styles of cooking place such an importance on texture--baby eels in a sizzling slick of oil, for example, is nudged just a shade away from pasta by the crackle of tiny bones under your teeth. Garlic is another constant, with its fascinating range of application throughout a meal--from subtle background agent to aggressive palate-prickler.
