Best

I tried Toro Bravo when it first opened and was not at all impressed. I went back last week and it was worse. Consistently Ricardo's Patanegra is the best tapas in Portland. In...

Worst

Last week was my third time coming to Pata Negra, and although I did enjoy some of the tapas, I felt that they were too expensive for what they were serving. In that case, I would...

Paella great! price not so good... 5/20/2006

The food was excellent! the taste was sooo good. However the price for the paella was too high in my opinion. We order a paella for 2, which is the minimum, and each had to pay $18.50. So basically the price for a paella for 2 was $37, which i could have eaten it all myself. So make sure to order something else because it wont fill you up. I went to this restaurant looking especifically for authentic paella and like i said the flavor was great. Their wine list and service were great too. Pros: wine, flavor, service Cons: price, parking more

A Great Spot for Groups or Girls Night out 5/14/2006

I have been here three times with my girl-friends and have enjoyed it every time. The Sangria Pitchers are wonderful, and the food is yummy. Its nice to just relax and enjoy the tastes of Spain! The service staff has been great and takes care of you on the spot! I will always suggest this place for fun! Pros: Sangria, Sangria, Sangria Cons: n/a more

The owner is a raving lunatic 5/12/2006

My boyfriend and I went on a Wednesday night at 7PM. We walk into an EMPTY restaurant with only two customers. We're instructed to sit anywhere, so trying to enjoy a romantic evening, we choose a table for 4 and decide to sit next to each other in a booth. We're informed that the manager has asked us to move to a smaller table in case the restaurant gets busy. We comply but want to see the manager who ignores our 3 requests. Finally, I approach him and and kindly ask to sit together b/c it's empty. He starts screaming loudly ""ahhhhh I care don't who you are. Get the f*** out of my restaurant. GET YOUR FAT A** OUT OF MY RESTAURANT"" ... He wholeheartedly freaked out 2 new parties that came in. We never once raised our voices, cursed, even got nasty. He just freaked out. Pros: good food Cons: hot-headed owner, empty most of time, spendy more

Good Food 4/23/2006

We ate here fairly early on a rainy weekday night, so we didn't have any trouble getting a table right away. We had an attentive waiter to start, but then there was a shift change and we felt a bit lost in the shuffle. The food was good, though, if not a bit expensive for what we received. The cheese on the cheese plate was tasty but would skip next time for a dish that was a bit more complex and worthy of the $$$. Pros: Nice atmosphere, Spanish Wine List Cons: Parking, Expensive more

Lousy food 3/27/2006

I have been to Patanegra only once, and the food was so bad I'll never go back. I started my meal with an awesome sounding duck confit and lentil salad, but was horribly dissapointed by the astounding lack of quality ingredients in a $15 salad. The duck was horribly dry and bland, and there was nothing much else to speak of. The paella, a dish that should be mastered in a Spanish restaurant, was dry, bland and devoid of character. I went into this restaurant with nothing but good intentions and searching for a good meal. What I got was below average service in the nearly empty restaurant, an empty wallet, and an unstatisfied stomach. You couldn't convice me to go back. Pros: Nice interiors Cons: bad food, Mediocre service, Expensive more

Delicious 2/28/2006

The food is simple, authentic, and absolutely delicious. Speaking as a chef, these guys did things right. more

Disappointing food 1/1/2006

The service we got from our waitress was the only thing that was really good. Oh and my husband's wine. But the food was not good at all. The food was way overpriced for what it was worth. Everything was mainly overgrilled, almost burnt. The tables are small and very close together so it feels like you are dining with your neighbour's table. The place wasn't even half filled but yet we weren't able to get a bigger table that seated 4 instead of the tables seating 2. I wouldn't go back there again...if the food was good we would, but it was not even close to good. Pros: Service Cons: Not accomodating, Food, Not much menu choices more

Always a pleasant affair 12/14/2005

Having frequented Patanegra since it's opening I've watched couples, families-large and small, and groups of friends enjoy the delicious variety and comfortable atmosphere this wonderful addition to Portland has to offer. Dressed up or not, the experience of dining at Patanegra can range from a light fare to a five course meal. It's up to you! The warm, friendly staff provide curteous service and great knowledge of their food and wine. I feel as if I'm dining overseas when I'm there and will continue to return and continue to bring friends and family as I am confident they will appreciate all the character and ambiance Patanegra has to offer. Pros: owner, food, comfort Cons: parking more

Treated very poorly by owner 11/3/2005

The food represented the best of Spanish flavors, and our server was fine, but I will never return due to an embarrasing altercation with the owner. Upon confirming our wine was corked, the server kindly took the bottle away. The manager approached us with the corked bottle, stating ""the owner won't take this...it's not corked."" My dining partner and I work in the wine industry, apologized, but insisted the wine was bad. The owner then came by and loudly insulted us. ""If you don't like the wine, don't say it's corked...I've worked in this business for years and know many wine distributors..."" He huffed off and left us in shock. We were absolutely offended that the owner of a restaurant would approach and speak to his guests this way. We promptly paid our bill, and will never return to a place where the owner has no respect for his guests. Pros: beautiful menu, extensive wine list Cons: terribly rude owner more

The food, the fun experimenting 10/22/2005

I loved Tapeo but it was limited compared to this incarnation which has more to ofter: more space, more selection, a more lively environment. I've been here with former residents of Spain and Mexico and this is both of their favorite tapas place. If only they had a full bar we'd be talking near perfect. In the meantime, I'll make do! Pros: interesting selection, quality, great sangria! more

Still going through growing pains, but wonderful 10/2/2005

The mixture of reviews almost made us miss this spot. That would have been bad. The sangria was a fantastic balance os citrus, spices, and wine, where the wine was definitely more than simply a carrier of other flavors. The Flan was simply the best I've ever had, creamy and smooth. The venison stew with forest mushrooms was simply smoky, savory perfection. The mushrooms were not over done or slimy. The garlic shrimp had a wonderful balance between the sweetness of the shrimp and the garlic bite. The lamb Osabuco had great flavor, with enough heat but without the heat overpowering everything, however, the lamb was about 30 minutes from proper doneness. The onely down dish in the 7 we shared. Pros: Sangria, Service, Seafood Cons: Noisy, Crowded, No Reservations more

Wonderful Meal 9/25/2005

If you loved Tapeo, you will definitely love Pantanegra (same owner)! The new restraurant is larger and not as stuffy. The food and wine is still marvelous and you do not feel like you are sitting on top of your neighbor. We had been faithful customers of Tapeo for years and were very upset when they closed. I am extremely glad to see the owner has reopened at a larger location. Pros: Excellent Food, Excellent Wine more

Avoid Paella 9/24/2005

We'd had paella in Spain and loved La Catalon's which no longer exists. Patanegra's paella had overcooked and hard sausage, the fish and rabbit were actually cooked just right, but not with the whole dish (I think they'd been added at the end). The rice had a smoked flavor (ugh). The salad was bland and came with goat cheese but the menu didn't say it was 2 slices melted onto two pieces of toast. The waitress treated everyone with disdain. There was a guy seated alone at a table for 2 next to us. The restaurant was only about 1/3 full so he moved to a table for 4. The waitress sternly told him he COULD NOT sit at a table for 4 but could move to a different table for two. After she moved him he got up and left. Pros: nice space Cons: food, wait staff more

First and Last Visit 7/10/2005

I can only say that this was the worst dining experience I have ever had. The waitress was abrupt and rude throughout the evening, not allowing one with allergies time to peruse the menu. We asked for an item which we never received taken off the bill, she then became argumentative. That being the last straw, we went to the owner, who was just as rude as she was - saying we didn't get good service because 3 in our party came 15 minutes late for the 6pm reservation - ridiculous! The owner came to our table - yelling ""f-ing amateurs!"" I hope he was more embarassed than we were, he should have been. The food was too oily and needing salt, as well as expensive for the size dishes you get. Better service, treatment, food and prices can be found elsewhere! Pros: colorful walls, sangria taste Cons: horrible service, cost more

Patatas Bravas Make My Year 6/23/2005

As with much of the neighborhood, we mourned the closure of Ricardo's Tapeo. We took my parents out to dinner at Patanegra to celebrate his return and my mother's birthday, and had a wonderful time. The service was fun and entertaining, and humored our attempts at Spanish. Many of the dishes were wonderful, particularly the Patatas Bravas (deliciously spicy) and the mushrooms. We ate every last bit, even the little fish (sardines? anchovies? I didn't order them but I did enjoy them), and moved onto dessert. The expanded menu is nice, and the opportunity to order large or small sizes is great. Delicious wine! Pros: Delicious Food, Fun wait staff more

Too oily, and need to be more accommodating 6/17/2005

A gal-pal and I went here in its first two weeks of business. We were sorely disappointed with the service and the lack of accommodations made to diners. I was 6 months pregnant, yet even so the waitress wouldn't BUDGE when I asked for one ingredient to be left off a salad. My friend finally blurted out, ""but she's PREGNANT, and might be allergic to it!"" Nope, waitress said chef was very adamant about not making any changes. She also gave my friend a hard time about the beverage she chose. For a new restaurant, we expected them to be more accommodating to promote business and good will. Also, the food was swimming in oil and way, way, WAY too garlicky. We will not be going back. Pros: Pretty interior Cons: Rigid servers , Poor customer service, Food too garlicky more

As good as you can get outside of Spain 6/3/2005

Patanegra is is the most autentic Spanish tapas I have had in the US. Great food, wonderful atmosphere, you can't go wrong! more

Wonderful Flavors 5/24/2005

What a great way to spend time with a group of friends. We ended up at this fun place after a night at the theater and indulged in pitchers of Sangria to start - great use of fruit and just the right amount of brandy and wine. Our array of tapas were perfect, succulent clams, mussels, garlicky prawns, the best duck we've had in a long time. The fish special with cremini mushrooms were cooked just right. Gather your friends, select from the best Spanish wine list in town, try the wonderful selection of spanish cheeses, tapas and paellas, enjoy the atmosphere and you might actually think you're somewhere on the Iberian coast. Pros: Fantastic Flavors, Great wine list, Ambience more

Fantastic! 5/23/2005

I have travelled quite a bit over the years and Spain was always a favorite destination with many lengthy stays. This place serves the best tapas by far from any I've experienced on this side of the hemisphere and possibly beats many in Spain itself. We have been back several times and each time the service, food and ambience was a pleasure. Tapas and paellas were full of flavor, wonderful use of pimenton, spanish paprika, and the wine list spectacular. I completely disagree with the prior review and have to say it is unfair to judge a restaurant after one visit and especially when a place has been open less than a month. Pros: Great flavors, Friendly Staff, Excellent wine list more

Waste of four hours 5/17/2005

While the server was very friendly, the price and the food was not. It was a total waste of time, and they apparently do not know the difference between vegetarian and non-vege. Save your money and go to the great bakery next door. Pros: friendly server Cons: meat in vegi item, price, serving sizes more
