Best

High class desserts, the staff is very friendly towards kids and they have kids menus and ambience and other kids.

Worst

I worked in a hotel that used Papa Hayden desserts when we were to busy to make our own. These were the only weeks we threw out cakes. I once opened a box and while it looked amaz...

Disappointing sunday brunch 3/25/2007

I went there last weekend for sunday brunch, and it was a very disappointing experience. Chorizo scramble was very dry and plain, no veggies, no nothing, only couple pieces of peppers mixed in, and breakfast potatoes were undercooked. They've also changed their potatos from regular house potatoes to large cubes of something partially boiled and then quickly fried, they were aweful! I will not go there for brunch for a long time. more

A must for those with a sweet tooth 2/21/2007

I've eaten lunch and dinner here on several occasions and found the food to be tasty, the service friendly, and the overall experience satisfying. The food isn't particularly innovative, (i.e. a chicken sandwich on fococcia) but it's hearty, generously portioned, priced fairly, and well executed. And since it must be mentioned..... most of the desserts live up to the hype! Pros: Desserts for days more

GREAT Service!!! 2/20/2007

Went in for an after dinner drink and something for the sweet-tooth and boy was I impressed. Our waiter Jacob, was one of the most professional waiters I've ever been served by. He was very educated on the menu, suggesting we try the banana cream pie. He also was able to recommend a very nice scotch to wash down our tasty treat. We enjoyed a piece of their homemade new york style cheesecake as well. Everything was delicious. We will be going back soon for sure. Pros: the service (jacob) Cons: a little pricy more

Delicious 1/29/2007

It's been awhile since I had eaten at Papa Haydn and I forgot what a great place it is. I had the roasted squash salad and for $11, it was a terrific and filling meal. Of course, saved room for dessert and the only bad part was trying to decide. I couldn't afford the calories to eat here all the time, but it's tried and true when you need a sure thing. Pros: Dessert, value Cons: Ambiance is a little stark more

Only go for dessert 11/11/2006

Fun place to meet . . . for dessert and coffee. I wouldn't have lunch or dinner here again. Too little for too much money. I had a great piece of salmon that was delicious, but felt ripped off since it didn't come with anything but some sprouts and the equivilent to half of a tiny red potato chopped up on a giant plate. It seemed soooooooo 23rd avenue. My husband's ravioli was below average. He had plenty of room for dessert. My suggestion is to go somewhere else and share one large portion of food then go to papa haydn and go crazy with dessert and coffee. Pros: desserts, atmosphere Cons: small parking lot often full, small entree portions more

Dessert, Dessert, Dessert 11/2/2006

I haven't eaten a meal at Papa Hyden's but I will tell you that I HAVE eaten plenty of their desserts!!! This is a destination dessert location!!! Tons of selection, tons of flavor, tons of FUN. Open late too!!! Pros: Dessert!!! more

Surprisingly dull desserts, but with good service 10/20/2006

I have heard rave upon rave about the desserts here for several years. I have even made my own version of the Boccone Dolce, which is one of my favorite desserts. Sadly, the one here and the few other desserts we sampled were so overly sugared that no other tastes came thru. The wine (Merlot) and service were great, very nice and attentive staff. Pros: service, attentive and gracious wait staff Cons: overly sweet desserts, no longer the best desserts in town more

Great Date Spot!! 10/8/2006

This place has the best desserts I have ever experienced anywhere in Portland. (The only place that rivals is Via Delizia) I often take my date here after dinner for dessert and coffee. Excellent atmosphere. Best for smaller groups, because you may be embarassed if your group gets too loud. Presentation is amazing... everything looks so good it'll take you a good 15 min. to decide on what little peice of heaven you're going to consume. Make reservations... it will be a long wait if you don't. Pros: Ambience, Dessert, Service Cons: Parking, Long Wait more

bad food, beautiful space, yummy dessert 9/18/2006

It is so sad when an old stand-by drops in to the land of restaurants gone bad. after repeated visits in the last few months hoping that eventually it would redeem itself, I have to say that this place has joined the ranks of restaurants coasting on a reputation built long ago. Desert is still lovely and delicious-- though of course with a list of desert options the length of a phone book, some are going to be better than others, like the amazing mexican chocolate cake! more

Holey smokes 5/28/2006

That banana cream pie could tame the wildest animal. Never a more enjoyable dessert on earth. Pros: nice presentation, good ingredients, different and new more

What is the fuss? 4/17/2006

I found the desserts very dry, the same as the review below. I have tried three things here and they where all average desserts. The dinner was average at best they said house ravioli and it was so obviously premade I was actually shocked. It is slighly amazing how busy this place is when there is a better cake at the new three lions bakery, better dessert at saint honore bakery and better meal at wildwood just down the street! Pros: Lively atmosphere, plenty of choices, wine list Cons: dessert, food, wait more

no need for dinner 2/19/2006

Although dinner is great, the desserts are beyond! throw jenny craig out the window and just enjoy the delightfull, have to have a glass of milk with, desserts. Pros: desserts more

What a difference a year makes! 8/4/2005

Wow. My partner and I recently returned to Papa Haydn after a year's absence. The food was great, apparently they have a new chef. Desserts, of course, were awesome (we always share the Boccone Dolce). Service was friendly and attentive. And the wine list... why don't these guys get more attention for having such an inventive, eclectic selection? Our dinner at Papa Haydn was THE BEST! Pros: Wine List, New Chef, Desserts Cons: Long Wait, Tables Too Packed In more

To die for!! 7/29/2005

The desserts are to die for. You get a lot of great quality dessert for the money. I haven't tried the food but I would highly recommend the desserts. They have a long wait sometimes so be prepare to wait! Pros: great quality, worth the money, a good selection Cons: long waits, staff, parking more

Yummy 6/20/2005

Everything here was delicious. Unfortunately, there was a long wait, but that is only because everything is so good! more

Service worth hurling up over 6/9/2005

This place used to be a great place to eat dessert. The regular food menu is not worth the price. I used to endorse this place, but I can no longer. This is not a place where you can walk up and buy a whole cake, rather they like to send you down to the market down the road for a cake that's a couple days to a week old. The service the last time I went in recently was horrible!!!! I was ignored for much of the time. I've noticed the last two times I've been in the cake I was served was rather rigid and stale. It's hard to get anything somewhat fresh anymore in this establishment. My espresso also was sour instead of bitter. I should have just gone to the green and white super chain if I wanted a sad excuse for coffee! May I suggest Moonstruck down the street or one of the other dessert establishments for a better dessert option on 23rd. Pros: Ambience, Selection Cons: Parking, Stale Desserts, Unsavory and Snooty Waiters more

Sad to not go back 2/11/2005

I used to go to Papa haydn's regularly until I experienced bad service. Anyhow I visited the other location and found it to be a pleasant ambiance and the service was oh-so-much better. The dessert is to die for, that is the only reason I go here. I highly reccomend the dessert, but the other customers, and the staff, thumbs down. Pros: parking lot, best dessert ever Cons: crowded, noisy, bad service more

Average 1/8/2005

Although reservations aren't accepted, you can have a cocktail or glass of wine in Jo-Bar next door after you put your name on the list. Most people seem to come for the deserts, so waiting for a dinner table doesn't take long, and they'll come get you when there's an availability. I tried the Gnocchi with Shitake Mushrooms and balsamic vinegar. It was delicious. My date had the ravioli stuffed with potato and cheese, which I tasted and found not too impressive. It had artificial bacon flavor and you couldn't taste the cheese at all. It's a very lively place, so go to have fun with a group of friends. If you want romance however, I'd try a smaller place with better lighting. Papa Haydn's has fairly bright lighting. We didn't try the destert, but you may want to. Apparently that's what they're famous for. Pros: 23rd Street charm, Nice Staff Cons: , no reservations, loud more

Exquisite Desserts / Crowded 10/9/2004

The Portland faithful tend to be dedicated to this place as the posh, trendy place to be for the perfect after meal option. Good for dinner and for dates, this is the place to be. Pros: Desserts, Location Cons: , Crowded, Service more

Over hyped 5/21/2004

The Papa Hayden dessert meme is done! I have tried several cakes and they were all very dry. I'm guessing the pastry chef doesn't know that cakes need simple syrup to moisten them up. The flavors were flat and the choclate tasted cheap to me. You'll have to try another restaurant if you're looking for good dessert. Pros: descent service, desserts look nice Cons: , dry cakes more
