Best

High class desserts, the staff is very friendly towards kids and they have kids menus and ambience and other kids.

Delicious! 5/13/2004

I love going to Papa Haydn's for brunch as much as possible. The staff is very friendly, the atmosphere is nice, also quite interesting to observe the people outside. The best tasting brunch in all of Oregon. The desserts in the display case look fabulous, although I have not taken the opportunity to try any of their desserts (as of yet). I look forward to it in the near future. Pros: muffins before brunch, attentive staff, never boring Cons: , very busy at times more

Horrible rude staff ! 1/19/2004

My husband and I stopped in for dessert to go. It was a horrible experience! The ""chef"" behind the counter was RUDE and he had the attitude that he was doing us a favor! They weren't busy at all, but it took about 20 minutes to slice a piece to cake and dump a cobbler from a icup into a to go container! When we arrived home the portion was small(cake) and he gave only a 1/2 scoop of ice cream! For 7.00+ a dessert they need to make it taste a lot better and not skimp! They should be happy to have our business...but instead they lost it! Go to Zupans for dessert instead they are all nice and know what customer service is!!!!!! Shame on you Papa Haydn! Pros: on 23rd street Cons: Rude staff, below expectations, no value more

A very average restaurant 12/22/2003

The sign in the window proudly proclaims that PH has served folks in Portland for more than 20 years. Sadly, this local landmark seems to be mostly resting on its laurels. A very unambitious menu not particularly well executed - though the customer service is quite good for this town. Cheap wine glasses, dry, overdone entres, uninspired wine list and cheap frozen french fries all take away from the wonderful ambiance and attentive service. Typical 23rd Ave eatery. Very little substance behind the reputation. Portland is clearly not a demanding restaurant town based on the ratings on this website. Pros: Nice room, Attentive service Cons: Boring menu, average quality food, Obvious cost cutting more

Desserts!!! 11/18/2003

While entertaining out of town guests, I decided to try Papa Haydn. I had heard a lot of positive things about the restaurant and it's famous desserts. The botton line is that the Papa Haydn lives up to it's reputation of great desserts. Parking could be much better, but the location is in a fun upbeat area. The only down side to our visit was the fact that they were not able to accomodate a dish for everyone in our party. One of our guests is a Vegan and Papa Haydn was not able to create something. However, besides that the desserts make up for eveything! more

Cake 10/29/2003

Despite how good it looks and how many times I keep going back to try various types of cake on the dessert menu (hoping it will improve), the cakes I have tried are always too dry, too sweet and lacking nice, rich texture of flavors. I have no idea why Papa Haydn's dessert keeps being so highly rated, but I find them lacking - at least where the cake is concerned. Pros: Many choices, Good service , Good beverage list Cons: Crowded, Noisy, Expensive for value more

Over rated 10/2/2003

Visited several weeks ago with my wife and another couple. The service was very slow (and they weren't that busy). The desserts were visually very nice. Eating was not so great. Flavors were flat and had the impression vegetable oil was used instead of butter. Overall, was very dissapointed from a quality view. more

Simply the Best 9/16/2003

Simply the Best overall restraunt in Portland - We live in Denver, but everytimr we are in Oregon we have dinner at Papa Hayden's. Without question, the BEST desserts in Oregon. Pros: Location, Ambiance, FOOD Cons: Parking more

A Selection to Salivate Over 8/11/2003

I have had better desserts than those served at Papa Haydn's, but not many. Their Autumn Merengue is a chocolate-lover's dream, and their Berry Cobbler with a scoop of their vanilla ice cream is unbelievably refreshing. But where Papa Haydn's truly shines is in their selection and display. With over 20 desserts to choose from every night, you can always try something new. Just seeing all of those beautiful cakes and pies right on the other side of the display case is enough to send a non-diabetic into insulin shock. Pros: Excellent Dessert, Incredible Selection, Beautiful Presentatio Cons: Price, LowNutritioinal Value more

Not only dessert also good food 7/22/2003

I used to just go to papa haydn for dessert. A portion of cakes is big and most of desserts are good. you can look at all the cakes before you choose. Good food and good dessert. Not good coffee though. more

A Solid Experience 6/23/2003

My main complaint with this restaurant is that parking is impossible, but it's impossible for everything else in the area, and I knew what I was getting into, so how much can I complain? I came mid-afternoon, so getting a table was very easy, although I've heard of long waits. The service was good, but not incredibly so. The entrees were good and wholesome, but simple. I have no complaints because they were priced very fairly for what they were. We shared two desserts, a boccone dolce and a fleur de lys. The former was excellent, but the latter was just OK. Pros: dessert, peoplewatching Cons: impossible to park more

Skip the Cake! 6/1/2003

Some of the most delicious goodies I've ever eaten! Enough to satisfy almost any sweet tooth. However, you might want to skip the cakes. I prefer moist, rich cakes. PH's tend to be on the dry side. Very dissapointing. Also, I find the hours rather inconvenient (particularly on Sunday), and it is often crowded. Pros: Yummy desserts, Great atmosphere, good price Cons: Poort hours, low quality cakes, often crowded more

Mixed feelings 4/1/2003

Great atmosphere and usually the wait staff is courteous/experienced. But weve also been highly disappointed on many occasions as well stale cake covered w/ ganache, poor food presentation, poor service (got coffee??), etc. Its a toss of the dice. Pros: location, atmosphere Cons: inconsistent, parking more

Got Milk??? 3/31/2003

I worked in a hotel that used Papa Hayden desserts when we were to busy to make our own. These were the only weeks we threw out cakes. I once opened a box and while it looked amazing, I took a bite and thought it was past its pull date. It was so dry and flavorless!! It had only been delivered the day before! I was shocked having heard so many good things before. Further encounters did little to change my first impression about their desserts. Pros: Presentation, Creativity, Good food Cons: Flavorless, Dry desserts, Overpriced more

dessert 3/12/2003

I love Papa Haydn's for dessert. I have taken numerous friends here and everyone has been delighted by their desserts. I have also had a few lunches at the NW location. The food is good but a bit over priced. I have a salad, hamburger and another sandwich. Pros: dessert, quick seating more

Got Napoleons? 2/22/2003

Papa Haydns used to be the best now its more trendy than tasty. I still go there if I wanted to be seen. They dont even serve Napoleons. Need I say more? more

resting on its laurels....... 2/21/2003

Years ago I went to Papa Haydn's on Milwaukie. It was a pleasure to stop in and have a dessert or a meal. I have been to the one in NW also, but recently it has slipped. The last time the food was quite mediocre and the service needed some real work. I am sorry to say that what I experienced years ago seems now to be a thing of the past. more

Mmmmmm..... 12/14/2002

Simply great desserts, and the food is not that shabby either. more

Best Desserts EVER! 12/11/2002

Papa Haydn has the most decadent desserts! Not only are they beautifully displayed, but they are simply divine. They melt in your mouth. Meals are also very good, but nothing compares to the wonderful selection and taste of their desserts. Pros: Trendy, Good Food, Good Service Cons: Crowded, Long Wait more

worth driving 3 hours for 10/29/2002

we come from the Seattle area every year for our annual christmans shopping trip - we always include Papa Haydn on our list of must do's more

Cool desserts that are not-so-hot 10/28/2002

Papa Haydn has a few good desserts. Unfortunately, many of them are better to look at than to eat. The portions are often too big...that's right...too big. There are eateries in Portland where desserts are truly wonderful, full of citrus flavors and locally grown fruits and nuts; perhaps topped with an unusual ice cream or sorbet. Also, sponge cakes and pastry shells filled with light (OK, but high calorie) mousses or puddings and perhaps drizzled with fruit or chocolate sauce. Those are the desserts to die for (and not to die from). Papa Haydn is your place for desserts if you like a big piece of something heavy and dense - a ""killer"" dessert. Pros: Big portions Cons: Crowded more
