High class desserts, the staff is very friendly towards kids and they have kids menus and ambience and other kids.

I worked in a hotel that used Papa Hayden desserts when we were to busy to make our own. These were the only weeks we threw out cakes. I once opened a box and while it looked amaz...

I work in the 23rd district, and am always referring people to this restaurant but NEVER again will I refer anyone here. I went in on a Saturday night (knowing that they would be busy), but could barely even get through the door to just say, I want some dessert to go. Once I finally got up to the dessert case, that was fully covered by even more people and rude waiters yelling ""I need by."" About 45 minutes later, I finally got out and when I got home to finally enjoy what I had spent so hard getting, my desert was dry and almost stale. You would think that a successful restaurant would realize that they need more space, mannerisms training for their staff, and a better way to keep their food fresh. Wedding Bells 10/2/2002

I'm 22 years old with no clue who I'm going to marry, let alone have a clue as to when I'm going to get married. But the one decision that has been made, and was made years ago, is my wedding cake will be made by Papa Haydn. I have always lived close to the location on 23rd, taking friends and family there for a late night dessert with coffee. Every person I have taken walks up to the glass case, eyes wide open, drool coming from the corners of their mouths. Not even the most sophisticated of people can hold back the look of a child seeing their presents Christmas morning. more

A reason to travel to Portland 9/23/2002

A restaurant with desserts to die for, in a charming neighborhood to walk off the calories. The food is also imaginative and good, as is the service. The only drawback is finding parking. I'm in a business where I get to see and eat a lot of fancy cake. In my opinion, Papa Haydn's cakes RAWK. My fave is the lemon chiffon. So many other choices too, plus lemon bars, gelato, and macaroons! On weekend nights the wait for a table for dessert can be long, but the attentive host staff made our wait easy by taking our cell phone, so we could shop NW23rd while we waited; they called when our table was ready. One caveat: they put too much cassis in the kir royales. The drink should be pink, not red! Pros: amazing selection, a pampering treat, great location Cons: too much cassis, prepare to spend more

If you feel like indulging yourself once in a while you should start by savoring one of the wonderful desserts artistically served at Papa Haydn. It is almost sinful, but I am sure that HE would forgive you...as well as you should forgive yourself for the extra calories. more

There is nothing better than the traditional chocolate cake, and Papa Haydn has one that is truly heaven. Their triple chocolate torte is amazing, everything one could possibly want in a rich chocolate cake with thick chocolate ganache. Yummmmm! Hard to argue 7/31/2002

I've sampled four different dessert varieties, they're hit and miss. The Peanut Butter pie was a bit too buttery, but still good. The ""Cassata"" was a disappointment. Prices are a tad high, but if I owned the place I'd do the same thing, as there's no shortage of customers. Why the early close on Sundays? Perfect end to an evening 6/15/2002

A group of friends came here after a wonderful evening of dancing, and this just wrapped it up with sparkly ribbons. Now (several years later) the only part I remember of the night is this restaurant. I would definitely go back! The desserts were all we had but the quality was better than anywhere I've been. I have eaten here on different occasions and really enjoy the atmosphere. The breakfasts are excellent and most of the dinner options are full of flavor. Worst Brunch in Portland 5/27/2002

My girlfriend and I went to Papa Haydn's one Sunday morning for brunch. Sunday brunch has become something of a tradition for us, so we can compare Papa Haydn with easily 20 other places around town. This was the worst. Her Eggs Florentine featured two solid egg yolks on--no kidding--one piece each of spinach and mushroom, each sitting on limp English muffin halves. My french toast was dry. Like sawdust. We pointed this out to the waitress, who nicely comped us our lattes, and assured us that this never happens. The woman next to us had received likewise overcooked Eggs Florentine minutes after we did. I guess they get points for consistency, but we'll never be back. This place definately has the best desserts in Portland. They are rich and to say the least... satisfying. Its a good place to go late at night... its classy, so its a good place to take a lady-friend. Sharing a dessert over a glass of wine is sure to win her over. The service may lack at times, but give them a break. They are just average Gen-X'ers who work in food service. Besides, the food and ambience easily outweigh any shortcomings.
