Great haircuts for a ridiculous price; complete attention and wonderful staff 2/13/2008

I have been going to PANYC for the past 2 years, and have never had a haircut that I didn't love. Simon is wonderful and extremely attentive - listens to what I want and at the same time, adds his personal touch to help guide me in the right direction. I have received many compliments and already referred almost 5 friends! I couldn't believe the price for such a great haircut, service, and nice people. I'd highly recommend this place - don't think twice! Pros: great haircut, price is great, wonderful people more

Simon says. Simon cuts. Simon impresses!!! 2/10/2008

Having read wonderful reviews, I made the visit to Panyc last week. \r \r With only a cell phone picture of the haircut I previously adored and a few guidelines of what it was I was looking for, Simon really took center stage with orchestrating an amazing salon visit.\r \r Perhaps it was his amiable disposition or his genuinely enthusiatic view of me as his client. I was immediately put at ease when he had a sit down with me to talk about what I was looking for.\r \r Not only did Simon constantly confided in me through every step of the haircutting process, he made suggestions that I immediately took a liking to. Before I knew it, he had sculpted a haircut that not only enhanced my natural facial features, he transformed my often lifeless Asian hair into a full-bodied sensation. To top it all off, he guided me step-by-step on how to style my hair and also gave me different variations on styles. \r \r Simon gave me a styling experience that should be a standard for all hair salons.\r \r I love my NEW haircut. His rapport building opened me up to a new possibilities with my Asian hair.\r \r Not only will I go again, I will avidly get my boyfriend to cut his hair with Simon as well.\r \r Thanks Simon. You Rock!\r \r Pros: Amiable staff Cons: Don't take the stairs. Take the elevator. more

Excellent experience all around! 1/24/2008

I decided to try out PANYC based on the Citysearch reviews and my need to find a place more convenient to the PATH in this cold weather. I chose to go with Simon based on the reviews and the fact that I have Asian hair. I definitely liked the salon space (not cramped, lots of seating) although the building itself is kind of icky, but that's not their fault. Simon was running behind schedule but was immediately very attentive to me, which was very comforting. I really appreciated Simon taking the time to have a dialogue with me about my hair, what I was looking for. I usually am pretty strict the first time I try a new place, but Simon's contributions definitely made sense and I'm glad for that. He was very precise when he needed to be and always checked in with me to make sure I was happy with what I was seeing. My hair feels and looks wonderful, and I'll be more than happy to return again! Pros: Spacious salon, attentive and friendly to clients, great hours and rates Cons: Main building is a little weird more

Love love love love love my new haircut! 12/1/2007

Went to see Simon about a month ago looking for ""a new haircut"" when I went in to talk to him, I was probably the WORST client ever! I didn't know if I wanted to grow it or cut it, dye it or streak it, curl it or straighten it. Simon spent 20 minutes talking to me and we finally came to the agreement that I had no clue what I wanted! He was so nice and told me what he thought would look nice on me. In the end, we decided that I needed to think about it a little bit more. \r \r I went back to see him on 11/29 and he even remembered me! He actually looked at my hair, brushed it, touched it etc before he sent me to the wash. Watching Simon cut my hair was like watching an artist at work. He's so great! Plus, he's funny, personable and just makes the whole experience great.\r Here was my favorite part...He actually walked me through the styling step by step. No hairdresser in this city has ever done that for me! He showed me how much product, how to hold the blowdryer etc. I felt like I was on cloud 9 when I left the salon. \r \r When I showered and styled my own hair today it was easier than my hair has ever been! He really created a look for me that is not only beautiful and totally fits my character but it also works with what my hair naturally wants to do! I have always HATED my hair and for once I love it!\r \r Not to mention, the salon is beautiful, the staff is amazingly friendly and warm. The prices were very reasonable and I didn't get any of that snooty attitude so many ny salons have.\r \r Simon, you are amazing! I love you, and will never need to look for a new hairdresser! \r \r A+++++++\r \r UPDATE: went back today 3/22 (almost 3 months since my last appointment. Simon remembered me and how my hair reacts to products and blowdrying. He's amazing. I left with another PERFECT haircut at a price that you can't beat in NYC. In Simon, I've finally found the stylist of my dreams! Pros: Friendly staff, great haircut, reasonable prices, not pushy Cons: The building is a bit sketchy, but their space is gorgeous! more

JC rocks! 11/6/2007

I have been going to Panyc for over two years and love my experience each and every time. My only complaint (had I written this a few months ago) would have been the cramped quarters - although homey - could get to be a bit too homey. I am happy to report that now I have no compliaints whatsoever with Panyc. Their new space on 17th is BREATHTAKING and very SPACIOUS. I am so happy for them!! I just got my color and cut done and have gotten more compliments (even by strangers) than ever before. JC always takes his time and the results prove it. Thank you so much! Pros: great atmosphere, excellent creative team, professional and unpretentious more

Best Side-sweeping bangs ever!! 11/2/2007

I was a little nervous to try ANOTHER new hair salon, after 2 or 3 bad haircuts at various (overpriced) salons in the CIty I finally found PANYC on citysearch and after reading all the rave reviews I knew it was a place I had to try...I've never had bangs before but I really wanted them...and Simon gave me the BEST haircut I've had in years....He cut my hair to prefection and I couldn't be happier with my new bangs! Thanks simon! Pros: Great haircut for a great price! more

Amazing Simon!!! 10/30/2007

Simon is soooo wonderful... I went in so unhappy about my hair...and walked out with the best cut I have ever had! I have never been this happy about a cut....ever. Simon is so easy going and friendly and really knows how to work with any kind of hair... If you have had any kind of problem with your hair, Simon knows how to fix it. I am a HUGE fan.... So Simon, don't go anywhere...you are my guy! Thanks! Pros: Very relaxing atmosphere Cons: You need a more prominent sign outside! more

Simon is the greatest! 10/13/2007

My hairstylist at Panyc Salon, Simon, is one of the best hairstylists I've had in my life. If they charged $25 instead of $55 for the cut, then the Salon would get 5 stars, but I suppose only my previous stylist was able to hook me up with that rate. Anyways, they wash your hair, give a head massage, and Simon does the most fantastic trendy cuts. He talks to you about your particular hair type, what you should do to groom it, and he's really cool. Pretty cute too but he's taken. Definately go to this salon! more

So far so good... 10/5/2007

I'v been jumping from salon to salon for the past 2 years now and I think I've finally found a place I can come back to. After reviewing everyone's comments about Panyc I thought I'd give it a shot. I had made an appointment with Chris today and I think he did a pretty good job with my haircut. I have this thick asian straight hair, but not quite straight enough because it tends to get a tad wavy so its been pretty hard to find someone who can understand how my hair falls. I only asked that I wanted bangs long enough to tuck behind my ears and be able to ponytail my hair and the rest he can decide what to do. I guess he had a vision and he went with it and now I'm one very satisfied customer. Its a little on the pricey side for me but I only get a haircut 2 to 3 times a year so I didnt mind paying for a really good one. Not sure how the other stylists are, but I recommend Chris and hope this helps someone out! more

Absolutely the best place to get your hair styled! 10/4/2007

Oh my gosh!, I am soooooo jealous that you have PANYC to go to for a fantastic hairstyle. I used to get my hair styled from JC when he was in a salon in Texas and it was a very sad day for me when he left for New York. When you read other reviews about people getting so many compliments on their hair after going to PANYC, believe me it is true! I always got compliments and people were always asking me who did my hair. I have been searching for 7 years to find someone that could do the fantastic job that JC did for me and haven't been able to find it. I have told my husband many times that ""all I want for Christmas"" is to go to New York and get my hair cut by JC .....haven't made it there yet....but hopefully someday I will! \r Trust me, go there, and you will be happy you did! I knew the ""Texas Trio"" would do great in New York because they are ""Texas Friendly"" but definitely New York ""hip""! Natalie Saavedra more

Best hair cut ever! 9/12/2007

I get my hair cut by Paul even though I live in the Washington DC area. I have very fine but curly hair that can frizz at the drop of a hat. I have never liked my hair the day after a cut, but I get complements for weeks afterward a trip to Panyc. Frankly, I think he is amazing! This salon is so relaxed back but professional. They charge a fair price and they really know what they are doing. Pros: Great cut, friendly staff, good with fine hair Cons: none! more

Amazing colorist! 8/1/2007

I went to Panyc with extremely high hopes and my experience there exceeded them! I have had many unhappy experience in New York with coloring my hair and I needed A LOT of repair. I asked Mary Lou what she suggested for my hair and she came up with a great plan to correct the damage. She asked questions and was genuinely interested in what I had to say. The process took a while but it was definitely worth it. My hair color looks amazing. Besides being an amazing colorist she was incredibly personable and a pleasure to be around. \r \r My haircut who was done by Simon was also a positive experience. He listened to what I said I wanted and stuck to it! There were no surprises!\r \r To finish up Mary Lou did an amazing blowout with my hair, I didn't know my hair could be that straight! Pros: Amazing color! Cons: Small space but they are mvoing more

Love this place!! 7/13/2007

I have been a client at PANYC for two years now and have recommended five girlfriends who have all had the same experience. Mary Lou is an amazing colorist. I always leave the salon completely satisfied. My color grows back looking extremely natural due to the care that she takes. So natural that people are often surprised that I highlight my hair. Last year, I cut over a foot off of my hair and was not at all scared knowing that I was in the capable hands of Paulie. He gave me a fabulous hair cut that I received rave reviews for. I have a blast every time I'm in due to the friendly and fun environment. Finally, Peanut brings a smile to my face. People that don't like dogs don't have to go near her but for the large percentage of us that do, she's nice to have around!!\r \r Best haircut and highlights I've had in the city, or in any city that I've lived in. Pros: Talented staff, fun and friendly environment, perfectly reasonable prices more

Excellent customer service and awesome hair coloring and styling. 7/9/2007

My husband and I were in New York on vacation the last week of June. We happened to come accross PANYC hair salon. I needed to get a new look for my son's upcoming wedding. So, I walked in and was helped immediately by Paulie and Mary Lou. They made suggestions on coloring my hair and a new hair style. Mary Lou did an awesome job on my hair. She colored and styled in a timely manner. When I got back to Texas, everyone was asking where I had gotten my hair done? I told my friends they would have to go to PANYC in New York City to get their hair done. I wished they would have a trendy salon in Texas like this one. I can't wait to show off my new hair color and style at my son's wedding on July 14th. I really appreciated the fast and friendly service. Thanks for great experience. Pros: Excellent skills and great atmosphere more

too busy for a new customer 6/27/2007

I called today to make an appointment since the other reviews seemed pretty favorable. The receptionist was snotty when I tried to make an evening reservation for color. I was ok with either colorist as long as they could fit me in after 5 on any weekday next month. (pretty flexible with date) I explained that I had long curly hair. She didn't understand that I couldn't leave work early during the week. Then she went on to tell me how busy they are because of 4th of July and that I had to make it in at 4:45. They only had an hour. An hour?! for highlights? yeah right. I don't need to spend that much money for a rushed job. ...didn't even consider another weekday closer to the end of the month. they acted like they don't need my business. maybe they don't, so I'll go somewhere else. you should too. they are too busy. more

Finally a salon that delivers great work, everyone needs to experience PANYC 5/3/2007

PANYC has a very comforatable atmosphere that makes you forget that you are in NYC. The team brings their artistic passion when working with my hair. I feel very comfortable with everyone that makes up the PANYC family. I recommend this salon to everyone I know. I am definitely a fan. Pros: Professional & great ambience, great availibility of service hours, open late more

WONDERFUL SALON/ GREAT COLOR! 4/25/2007

I am so glad that I found a great salon. After so long I was thinking that I would never find a nice place. I went in for the first time this past week, and got my hair highlighted by Pauline. It was so great. She was fast, and very professional. She knew exactly what I wanted. The salon is like most New York spots, small, but soon they will be moving to a bigger location. I can't wait. If you haven't found a great place, try this place. Everyone is so kind, and the work that walks out of there is mind blowing. I'm so glad I found Pauline. I can't wait to tell all my friends. I'm so happy with my hair, for once! Thanks again Panyc. You guys have made me really happy!! And at home. Pros: Pauline and peanut more

Exciting!!!!! 4/21/2007

I am soooo excited! \r at last! i have been looking for the right hair salon for me like the one I left behind In Barcelona when I moved to the city two years ago, there are millions of salons in the city but whenever something is good and nice- something else ruined it for me. I then checked on city search and found this place. i am so happy! (who would believe finding the right place can excite me so much ;)) I went there for the second time last week, to really check that my first time was not just ""beginner's luck"", and yes, I'm inlove with the place. The service is very professional but you still feel like you are at home, the staff is so welcoming and friendly, and you dont get to feel any of the ""salon drama"" which is typical to most other places i tried. and most important is the great artwork that was done with my hair, these guys are creative and artistic enough to suggest great ideas but at the same time really listen and quick to understand what I was looking for. their color expert Marylous made my hair excatly what color i wanted and my now new stylist ""JC"" gave me a wonderful cut and styling after. GREAT PLACE, I really recommand and cant wait to see their new salon they are working on. Congratulations to you guys and thank you so much! I'm goint out to conqer the city! :) Pros: Artistic vision, updated fashion, professional, friendly more

Not sure about cozy 4/1/2007

I went to Panyc after hearing the rave reviews but I was a little disapppointed. The place is so small, everyone was bumping into eachother, including the stylists. The bathroom was a little hole in the wall complete with a non functioning window which was removed and propped next to the window so that the neighbors got a good view of you. There were not enough seats for people recieving treatment and so at one point, I switched off with someone then switched back again. To top this off, their water heater was small and so we had to stop in the middle of my shampoo to wait for it to heat up. 5 minutes later, I was rinsed with iced cold water.\r \r All that aside, there is a very energetic aura to this place. There's friendly laughter and chit chat. Most of the clientelle seemed to be regulars, if not friends. I got a half-head of highlights done with Coleen. I am satisfied with the service but not blown away.\r \r I think that the prices are ""good"" compared to upscale NYC salons, but poor considering that the place is about the size of my bedroom and doesn't have hot water. I heard some talk about them opening up in a larger location. Until then, I wouldn't go back. Pros: no pressure to buy products, nice people Cons: too small, no hot water more

Go elsewhere 4/1/2007

I was very disappointed with my visit to PANYC. After reading the reviews, I went in expecting a good haircut by an experienced stylist. After a few minutes, the stylist (Chris) snipped his finger with the scisors. To my surprise, he said ""I do it all the time"", pulled out of his drawer a pomade to cover it up, went to the back to get a bandaid and continued to cut my hair --with the same bloody scisors. Yuck!\r Maybe it's a common occurrence -- but in my 32 years of getting haircuts, I have never had a stylist who snips his fingers ""all the time"" -- that speaks to inexperience. And that, unfortunately, shows in the haircut. I went in for some simple layering and will have to pay for a second haircut (elsewhere) to give it some actual shape. I would not recommend it to anyone, more
