Great Haircut - Sonia was the BEST!! 11/25/2008

I haven't cut my hair in months and then I decided to cut about 8 inches off... I found panyc salon on citysearch and was recommended to go to Sonia. I was extremely nervous and wasn't even entirely sure what I wanted, but she worked with me to figure out a cut that looks fantastic. I have gotten nothing but raves from my friends, family and co-workers. The cut is cute, fun, sassy and so easy to manage! I love it and will definitely bring my business back here to Sonia. Thank you!! Pros: everyone was really nice; all stylists seemed to be doing a great job; Sonia more

LOVE my cut! LOVE Sonia at Panyc! 11/24/2008

I had my first cut at Panyc a couple of months ago - and while it was a pleasant experience I by no means left the salon ""loving"" my hair. Wayyyy over-due for a cut I made another appointment at Panyc and crossed my fingers that the second time would be the charm. My appointment was with Sonia and she worked MAGIC with my long hair! She listened to my requests/concerns and then gave me the beautiful, easy, gorgeous cut I had been hoping for. \r \r It's a shame the previous reviewer had such an unpleasant experience - but mine was just the opposite! It's the best cut I've had in 10yrs in NYC! Pros: friendly staff, great space, reasonable price more

Worst Haircut I've ever had - Avoid Panyc and SONIA at all cost 11/18/2008

This woman butchered my hair. I asked for a simple trim and I ended up with some crazy rocker chick chop job. I went to another salon to get a consult about fixing it and the stylist said that this was the worst haircut she's seen in years. It's going to take over a year to get it back to the way it was before. I thought $65 was a good deal, but it ened up costing $200 all together after getting it fixed. Not to mention I've lost the majority of my hair. It's been over a week and I still want to cry every time I look at my hair. So, save your money and your tears and avoid Panyc and Sonia at all cost. Pros: Nice salon space Cons: Terrible Haircut, Sonia more

meh 10/21/2008

After reading the online reviews and looking at the website- I really wanted to like this place. I have had several disasters in this city and was really trying to find a salon to stick with. I know the stylist and the salon may not always be indicative of each other (one bad stylist may not make for a bad salon) but I do feel that the owners should not tolerate sub par work, or work that does not reflect well on the salon as a whole. Apparently, there are some really wonderful stylists here, so I won't say don't try them. However, my experience was not so great. The stylist I had was on the lower end of the cost spectrum there, but he was the only one who could take me on short notice. From the time i started talking to him, i felt like I was imposing on his time and that he had somewhere else he would rather be. He was constantly acting distracted- and did not seem to listen to what i had to say except for the fact that I wanted to keep some length and wanted bangs, other than that i felt like i was pretty much invisible. He seemed really rushed (but didnt appear to have anyone after me) and continually called me ""hon"" or something like that. I felt like he did not try very hard at all- and I gladly would have paid for more and left a generous tip if he had. The cut i ended up with as well as the experience as a whole can be summarized by ""meh""- not terrible, definitely not awesome. He also wanted me to come back for him to do my color in which my response is now- ""no way in hades"" because of how distracted he was and how little respect I received from him. \r But, as I said- this was just one stylist - perhaps the senior stylists have a greater sense of customer care and service. Pros: convenient location, low key, super sweet receptionist, cute puppy to greet people Cons: impersonal stylist and assistant (who washed my hair), apathetic at best, acted bored and condescending more

Best Salon in NYC 10/14/2008

I've been going to PANYC for about two years now and have a great experience every time. Mary Lou does THE BEST highlights and is completely honest about what color will and will not work for you. I have had people stop me in the street and say they have been trying forever to get their color the same as mine. Paul cuts my hair (but everyone there is good) and gives the best blowouts afterwards. He will never cut too much or not enough and is very receptive to your concerns and ideas. Everyone there is so nice, well trained, professional and FUN! Pros: fun atmosphere, skilled stylists Cons: none I can think of more

Fantastic Love It 10/14/2008

I have lived in NYC for 15 years and bounced around forever looking for the perfect salon- one with a talented, friendly, knowledgable and professional mix of stylists and colorists who treat you like they really care about cutting and coloring your hair the way you want it- a fun, laid-back atmosphere, a place where I could feel confident that should I want anything from a basic trim and color touch up to a trendy, dramatic ""new-do"" I would be be in good hands. This is THE ONE. My appointments always start on-time- in fact, the salon is managed quite well overall- always clean, well stocked with products for sale (although I never feel pressured to buy anything- but usually do anyway becuase they carry some of the industry's top product lines) veryorganized in general. It really is a treat and a pleasure to go there and I very much look forward to my appointments with Mary Lou (color) and Paul (stylist). Such a nice place to be, everyone is friendly, no attitude, no drama. I have recommed several freinds and co-workers (many are now regular clients!) My hair always looks and feels great! Pros: Close to subway, professional & fun staff, nice atmosphere, fair prices more

Expected so much more based on the reviews... 9/15/2008

My regular stylist is on vacation all summer so I had done some searching and took a chance and booked an appointment based on the positive reviews. I was really excited about the cut because it was a few days before my three week vacation and I was hoping for a great look. I rushed back from the Hamptons to make the appointment and avoid the full cancellation charge. I was pretty underwhelmed. Chris seemed bored, unfriendly, and had little to offer in the way of recommendations. In the end, I got an average cut I could've gotten at any discount chain chop shop, though for five times the cost at Panyc. Worst of all, he had actually thinned my hair out on top so much by cutting into it sideways (to add texture?) that I looked as if I was balding. When i was on vacation, I actually decided to get another cut and only 30euros later, i looked like I had hair again. Besides the cut, his way of maneuvering my head was bizarre--no verbal ques, just literally pushing and shoving my head down, up and from side to side--almost like he's mad at you or hates his work. I'm a pretty big/solid guy, so I have to wonder if he's given some poor woman whiplash... Pros: nice salon/atmosphere Cons: poor cut, not worth the cost more

edward scissor hands 9/9/2008

So, im reading reviews and i have to admit, ive never been to panyc. but my friend has, and chris cut her hair, and she was very happy with the result, although it wasnt one of your makeover type hair cuts, rather a trim. all i have to say personally is that i agree with the edward scissor hands bit with chris. because hes just as hot as johnny depp. more

HIdden Gem 8/27/2008

I feel as though I have stumbled upon the best kept secret in NYC. Mary Lou is an amazing colorist, really listened to my wants and needs and talked me thru the options and process. So happy with the results. The salon is sweet and pleasant, everyone was warm and welcoming and I felt completely comfortable and relaxed (I am usually a Nervous Nancy in salons because of past bad experiences). I kinda want to keep the secret to myself, but it is one of those things where you want to pass along the good word and share the love. Pros: Warm and welcoming atmosphere, professional expert skills, amazing results more

Fabulous hair coz of a fabulous colorist 7/17/2008

Mary Lou, fantastic!!! to say the least\r I have wavy hair that has been abused with not-so-great salons in terms of colors and at home with colors from cartons, so I had different shades horizontal straps, my brown roots, my orange ends. \r After talking to Mary Lou I still didn't know what is the name of the color I want, but with swatches, photos and a few adjectives and lots of gesticulation (like boom, wow), she understood what I need.\r 2.5 hours but the color is AAAAHmazing. I've always had red henna color but now its mahogany burgundy mix and the color is consistent throughout. One session that's all it took.\r Mary Lou was very amicable, professional, funny (maybe she is a Leo) \r No pressure to buy anything, jus suggestions.\r Will definitely touch up here from now on\r \r Pros: great staff, ambience, wonderful stylist, best color more

Finally Found a Great Stylist at a Great Price!!! 7/2/2008

I went to Panyc to get my hair cut and colored. I called in on Friday afternoon and got an appointment for Monday Evening! I went with a Junior Stylist named Whitney because their prices are the lowest, also prices go down for returnign customers! The enviroment was very relaxed, no awkward, pressed conversation - just freindly. Whitney gave me an amazing cut (before I had just long, full hair and now I have long, layered hair with bangs). Whitney also gave me an awesome strawberry blond color!!! The cut was 60 and the color (very full head of highlights) was 160, great prices for Manhattan!!! I was also never charged for additional color glazes or drying my hair like so many salons do! I left feeling happy and not stressed, so I am definitly going back! Pros: Great stylists, prices and ambiance. more

Great Location, Great Atmosphere, Best experience overall 6/27/2008

Finding a good hair Salon for a decent price and without bitchy and arrongant stylist is pretty hard in New York. Well dont look for it anymore go to Panyc. \r The Staff is friendly, the location is nice. I hated hair salon before discovering Panyc.\r i went there without an idea of what i wanted to do. made an appointment with Paul, and decided to totally trust his instinct and let him do what he thought would be good, the results was great. My hair are curly and the hair cut for months after the cut still looked good curly and straight, and was so easy to style. \r And girls let Paul use his razors to cut your hair, he loves to use them (from what I gathered) and your haircut will be fantastic!!!\r Pros: Friendly staff, experienced and patient Hair stylists, prices, nice space Cons: none so far more

SIMON...a Shear Genius!! 6/22/2008

I'm so glad i finally tried panyc b/c i loved it...or should i say SIMON. The man is a hair GENIUS, a hair whisperer that understood all the annoying nuances of my hair. I've got hard to cut asian hair that's thick in the back, thin in front, and was trying to grow out my bangs from my last bad cut. Both the haircut and experience (like the styling tips) were in a different league...better than all the japanese salons i've tried (including hoshi coupe, ueno) and other $100 cuts in other cities. I actually LOVE my hair now for the first time in a long time. He's also sweet and unpretentious unlike so many stylists these days. I'm so done looking for a hair stylist...at $65 for the first cut, then $55 thereafter...it's totally worth every penny to look and feel your best. Pros: SIMON, Simon, Simon Cons: Shady building but the actual salon is a hidden treasure more

GREAT COLOR EXPERIENCE WITH MICHAEL 6/15/2008

I have 2 friends that go to Panyc and they suggested I go there when I finally decide to say ""bye-bye!"" to box color!! So, that time came and I made an appointment with Michael. When I got there, he sat me down and we talked about what I wanted and what he could do for my hair considering the color defects that were left by the dreaded box color. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by how much time he spent with me discussing my hair and color options. I never had another stylist or colorist take so much time listening and really working with me and caring about me and the result. My processing experience was great -- Michael made sure I was comfortable and he kept checking in on the color. I felt like I was the only one in the salon -- and I wasn't. He blew out my hair and was giving me styling tips, which I appreciated. I was really happy with the results -- the color looks incredible! I also love that what he did suited my budget -- he took into consideration the upkeep and how often I'd need to come back. That was a definite surprise. He was real, and really seemed invested in me, his new client. I'll be back for sure. THANK YOU MICHAEL. :) more

First trip- good overall experience 5/28/2008

I was in need of a cut and color place in NYC as a filler for when I can not make it to my fav stylist up in RI. This place was great- Michael did my hair- and i loved what he did with the cut and color. Its a really reasonable place price wise and the staff was incredibly nice. Dont let the decor fool you- as you walk in it looks like it is an abandon construction sight- the salon is nice (not amazing) but nice. For a cut and highlight you cant go wrong with PANCY. more

Amazing Haircut by Simon!...Color Disaster... **Fantastic (and Difficult) Color Correction by Marylou 5/23** 5/20/2008

I just left PANYC with mixed YET STRONG reviews. Simon cut my hair-and I swear this is the BEST cut ever!! What talent and genius!!When I made the appointment,I was told that I need to come in for a consult with the colorist in advance.I was very clear-my natural hair color with some natural looking, sun kissed, warm blonde highlights on top.He asked red?I said, NO RED.HATE RED.He said it was easy. Today when I got there, we spoke again. He seemed uncertain but told me that it would be great, and I tried Michael out.Well, I just left there with hair that is striped RED and yellow- not even a natural red (unless I'm a Gerber Daisy),but a lipstick red!The job is sloppy- my roots are bright red and the red dripped over onto the too white highlights. The highlights are uneven, more pronounced on the left side (although he asked about my part, and parted it correctly) there are nearly no highlights on the right side on the top layer where my hair parts. This is the worst color job I have ever seen!THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE OF EVERYTHING WE SPOKE ABOUT.TWICE. AFTER my cut, the colorist came by-he never even saw it after the wash.I explained my problem. He said it looked great. Then he told me to wash the hair I just payed $100 to cut and style. Then he told me I would need to wait a week until he comes back to fix it.Upon checkout.I had to tell the receptionist as I paid an almost $250 tab with tears streaming down my face.**I was scheduled for Friday and spent almost 5 hours with Marylou... who is SO SKILLED that she patiently studied my hair and returned with the 5 or 6 various mixtures to begin.Carefully foiling sections- even pieces-at a time, washing the sections in different parts, conditioning my hair in between so it did not dry out terribly, toning and carefully checking to see how it took. I left last night with NORMAL hair. Not quite mine yet.It is a too dark brown and the highlights are still a too cool tone. But I am too scared to do anything for a while. MIXED EXPERIENCE. Pros: Simon's haircut... Marylou, Master Colorist and Color Corrector. I urge anyone who hates someone else's mistake to let Marylou fix you! Cons: The defensive and unapologetic attitude of first colorist after two prelim consults and a color resulting in the EXACT OPPOSITE of what I said and we spoke about. Very upsetting. more

Get your hair cut here! 4/3/2008

I just moved to the city and was in NEED of a haircut, it had been about 7 months ( i was letting it grow out). I was overwhelmed trying to find a place to go, and while I am willing to pay some money to get my hair cut, I am not going to pay 150+ when i don't know how good they are. My friend suggested PANYC, and I totally owe her. The place is easy to get to- and ya, its in an old building, but this is NYC. They have the entire 5th floor and it is such a great space. Everyone was really friendly, and I had to wait a few minutes (I was early and he was running a few minutes behind) and the receptionist gave me magazines, offered me something to drink and was very nice. JC cut my hair, and he was fantastic. Basically, I told him I need help, and I had no idea what I wanted. He talked to me about my hair, if I air dried it, etc and then told me what he thought would look good. I just let him have at it, and it is the best haircut I have ever had! I can do it a bunch of ways and its really easy. JC was super nice and friendly and totally knows what he is doing. If you are willing to pay above $60 for a cut, but still aren't sold on the super expensive salons, then this is the best place to go! Pros: great staff, JC is fantastic, best haircut ever, pretty affordable Cons: busy place more

No Joke, a Great Salon to Try if You are looking for a Great Style 3/12/2008

I have lived in the NYC area for 9 years, gone to probably about 50 different stylists (Including salons like Bumble and Bumble and Elizabeth Arden {who made my look like Bon Jovi}), and FINALLY have found a stylist that is worth (and more) the price in Panyc and JC. The laid-back feel is not intimidating, they work with you, make sure the cut/color is right for you, and totally gives you a great look. I have gotten countless compliments from other stylists on my color and love my cut.\r \r It's worth it Pros: Location, price, experience, I was always taken ontime more

Lots of frills, no thrills 2/19/2008

I tried this place out in October because I needed a trim. Made the appointment at the front desk. Since it wasn't a major style I wanted I said that I would take the lowest level of the stylist. Having no idea of what the levels of the stylists meant (the place I used to go to in Boston was a regular salon and I'd been going there for years, so this level-thing must be a NY phenomenon), I figured it couldn't be that bad to get a simple thinning out and trim from a person with a few years of experience. It took about an hour for this guy to cut my hair and he didn't even thin it out as much as I wanted. I couldn't really tell the difference in the before-and-after. He just seemed to clip the dead-ends and focus a lot on the back of my head than anywhere else. My hair looked ok when I left and I was glad the split-ends were gone, but I paid way too much for the end result. The other thing that creeped me out was the stylists would pick up and pet this dog, Peanut, not wash their hands and then serve the customers. I am now in need of a real cut and short of going to Boston to get it done, it will be trying out a chain salon. Pros: none really Cons: price, sketchy location (building, not neighborhood), hygiene with the dog more
