Good food...not for everyone. 6/20/2007

I had a pleasent experience dining at Mr Chow's. We had reservations and the staff was extremely nice and hardly what I would call pretentious. We were quickly seated and attended to. Our waitor was helpful explaining the menu and custom options. I recommend letting the chefs do their thing as long as you specify exactly what you like and dont like. The food was terrific, as was the service. I think most people's issues come with the price tag....just dont go if you don't want to spend money. Dinner for two w/ drinks will be about $200+. Pros: Good food and service Cons: expensive and a bit crowded more

been there, done that, OVERRATED 6/13/2007

I read lots of horrible reviews on this place before I went for a lunch meeting and thought, ""how bad could it be if it's supposedly a huge hot spot?"" well, to say the least it was a disappointment. it is a totally pretentious place that looks run down with cracked plaster walls and dirty floors and corners that havent been cleaned in who knows how long. I have been to many top restaurants in LA and Beverly Hills and basically this is a place for people who appreciate High Prices. If you go, expect below par food - unless you're just going to see and be seen. Pros: many vegetarian options, nice location Cons: pretentious, overpriced, overrated more

Ah, Bad Chinese Take out on Memory Lane! 5/8/2007

It's odd how a place and a dinner can remind you of a childhood taste treat. Eating at the punitively priced Mr. Chow's did just that. I esperienced flavor deja vu, while eating the less than average fare: I was taken back to the comparatively glorious meals that came tumbling out of a pre-packaged Chun King Oriental Dinner! Remember the cans of Chop Suey noodles? I wished I had them the night I ate at Mr Chow - squished into a table with my friend and his soon to be ex-wife. I thought that the food was hardly on the same level as Panda Inn, PF Chang or the local fancy Mandarin eatery. During the ""must have"" beef dish, I flashed back to my mom opening the can of Chop Suey noodles: a flood of digestive memories came over me in a wave totally unrelated to the pitiful efforts on our table. Pros: Watching idiots dropping car payments for bad food, seeing stars Cons: The food, the price, the noise, the crowded seating (unless you're Toby Maguire) more

You guys are rediculous!! 4/26/2007

First of all...You don't complain that a restaurant is too expensive after you eat there. Thats the dumbest thing ever...I would never eat at a restaurant without finding out how much i'm going to end up paying Thats your first mistake. The service really isn't that bad. One woman said the waiter tried to force her to eat what he/she wanted her to eat but when i go there i order whatever i want and they don't care at all, just tell them ""no i think i'll order my own i am in the mood for something specific"" And there is no intentional seperation between ""celebrities"" and ""normal"" people ( whatever the hell that means) Some Celebrities request specific sesating and because the majority of them spend a good chunk of money and they are Mr.chows larger clientel they get what they want. So what have we learned today? #1 If you can't afford/don't want to spend a lot of money, then don't eat a freakin' expensive restaurant!!!! #2 YOU PAY so tell the servers what you want!!! and #3 everyone knows this is a celebrity hang out...if you don't want to feel like a ""normal person"" DON'T EAT AT MR.CHOW!!!! Pros: Nice treat on special occasions or nights out with the girls! Cons: Paparazzis are waiting outside all the time and they will take a picture of anything more

Mr Chows is very good 4/23/2007

The atmosphere is nice, though busy and can get a bit loud. The waiters are attentive. You can order off the menu, though I suggest the price fixed at $54 a person where they create something special for you. Tell them what you like and don't like and give them room to experiment. if you don't like it they will take it back and try again. I found the food to be excellent. Plan on $150-200 a couple. Pros: great food Cons: crowded more

So-So 4/12/2007

It's not worth the money. I had better food in Chinatown for a fraction of what we paid here. We had a party of 6 and was nearly rubbing elbows. Unless you're a celebrity and want to pay for the VIP room it's not worth it but you can always count on seeing someone famous there. Pros: Celebrity sightings Cons: Food more

Another AWESOME restaurant!! 3/28/2007

I had a great time at Mr. Chow. Our table wasn't crowded at all, the service was UNBELIEVABLY fast. I had barely finished my entree and the waiter was there to whisk it away. The champagne was flowing, the food delicious, and the accommodations were wonderful. The only downside was having large groups of people gawking around like idiots trying to spot the celebrities. Expect to have a decent size bill at the end of dinner. Well worth the cash. Pros: VIP treatment Cons: gawking tourists more

whatever...... 3/25/2007

It never ceases to amaze me how much money the lame will drop just to be somewhere a celeb is. I am reading these reviews and the name dropping just keeps on coming.....""Regina King the actress recommended it"", puhlease.....Face it people, this is a pretentiously run place with below average food that's pretention has completely brainwashed Hollywood. Celebs are no different than anyone else when it comes to following the crowd. As a matter of fact, they are worse! Very very elite places in NY and Europe do the ""no menu, eat what I bring you and pay what I tell you thing"". But those places have earned that right because those places are about the food, not Hollywood!!! You want good chinese? Go to CHINATOWN. DUH! You want a classy Hollywood scene? By a time machine and travel back about 30 years because class doesn't live here anymore. Pros: Great for desperate idiots looking for celebs Cons: food and everything else more

Perfect...For A Masochist 3/4/2007

My first mistake was going solo for lunch. See that bar up front in the pictures? Not serving there...just a front. The previous reviewers are dead-on about the tables..they are so close together that everyone might as well be sitting together. Who ever heard of tables so close together the waiters have to pull the table out in order to seat you? What maitre'd got a $250 a year raise in order to dream that up?Probably the snotty one that seated me at a table that pulls out, locks me in right next to , and across from, some old lady eating by herself. No other nearby tables are filled, mind you. When I asked the maitre'd if I could sit one table over, he turned up his nose and muttered, ""Suit yourself...."" as he marched off. OK, a famous celeb shows up a few minutes later and sits a few tables down with some agent-looking type. And the beautiful people are everywhere. But trust me folks, even all that is not worth the pain. The next minute that snot maitre'd seats two pampered women straight out of ""Real Orange County Housewives"" to my right, then some couple that met on ""eharmony"" and are on their first date to my left....I'm sure they enjoyed me being that close (especially the first-date couple) as much as I did. Pros: Celeb sightings Cons: Everything else there is to review. more

Chow is A GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT!!! 3/1/2007

This place is all hype. If you are shallow enough just to go to a place because CELEBRITIES eat there, then that's another story. The service is horrible, and they don't cater to you even when you have reservations. The food is so-so, I would rather eat at PF Chang's any day of the week. The maitre de was scooting people past us, and I understand taking care of regulars, but if you have a reservation there, take care of the reservation. They may will be your next regular if they feel they are taken care of on their visit to the establishment. Choose somewhere else to eat Chinese, and save your money for something worth it. Like Panda Express, the food and service is better there. I heard Paris was seen there last night! HA Pros: Nada Cons: Service, Food, and cramped seating more

How to eat a lettuce wrap 2/4/2007

Mr. Chow's wins the triple crown of horrible LA dining experiences: medicore food, obnoxious service, and pretentious atmosphere. Cons: Obnoxious service, average food, pretentious, overpriced more

Terrible... terrible... terrible... Need I say anymore!!! 1/14/2007

Comparing a city's top restaurant to a neighborhood taco stand is just silly, but I can't help but say that the food in this restaurant is nothing better than the a six dollar meal you get in a fast food Chinese restaurant @ a corner shopping center. The appetizers were tasteless. The main course had dry meat & chicken/duck, tasteless fish, the meat mix with the noodles was salty and terrible tasting, and the shrimp was ok! I ordered regular coffee...It tasted like muddy water, I was so fed up... I asked them to take it back and provide a refund for the $3.50 charge. Cons: Bad food, service, cramped seating, bad choice of music. more

Horrific Tourist Trap - Avoid 1/13/2007

I've dined at some of the best restaurants in LA, NYC and London. Mr Chow now has the distinction of being one of the worst restaurant experiences in memory. The waiter told us that the chef wanted to create something special for us. Usually, this is a win situation. However, in Mr Chow's case, we soon realized that ""something special for us"" meant ""something the waiter tells everyone."" We were soon presented with a succession of gastronomic mediocrity that included bland dumplings, wilted lettuce wraps, room temperature whitefish and some kind of red meat that looked so uninviting we simply pushed the dish away from us. This place is not even in the same league as PF Changs. Pros: Celebrity sightings Cons: Horrible food more

Posers welcome. 12/27/2006

I cannot believe this restaurant has existed for so long and remains eternally crowded despite its mediocre food and service. Oh wait, it's in Beverly Hills and it's a ""celebrity hangout""... everything comes together now. Not that authenticity is always a concern, but you should know this is about as Americanized ""Chinese"" as you can get. Totally crowded, loud, bad service. I once attended a dinner in the private room upstairs, which was a real disappointment. Seafoam green walls without windows, no artwork... felt like a mental institution or something. Some of the food is downright BAD, other food just bland and forgettable. It is kind of nice that they'll do a tray of lychees if you want it, but they clearly came out of a can. Just... don't go. Pros: I guess you can see celebrities? But aren't they everywhere? Cons: food, service, totality of the experience more

best service 12/15/2006

I took my daughter for her 14 birthday her for lunch and i had an amazing time. what makes this chiness restaurant different from all the others is when you r seated u r seated without a menu and first asked what to drink then the waiter will ask you if you would like a menu or he/she will make one up to your liking asking you what you like and suprises you wonderful light fare like never before. my daughter shared everthing because it comes family style and just enough for the two of use. Pros: good food and service Cons: crowded seating if at a table more

come on, authentic? 12/1/2006

are you kidding me? anyone who says this is AUTHENTIC chinese food is definitely not chinese...nor asian. i think it's fine to love the restaurant b/c of celebrity sightings and ""tasty"" food, but calling it an authentic is outright insulting (food doesn't have to be authentic to be well-seasoned obviously). also saw some other visitor attribute the small portions to asian food in general b/c asians are small. the portions are small b/c you're eating at an ""upscale hip"" restaurant, not b/c asians portion-control to stay ""small."" Try eating in the san gabriel valley for huge portions of authentic chinese food. But of course, go to Mr. Chow's if you're looking for a hip Beverly Hills celebrity hangout, nothing wrong with that. :) Pros: celebrity hotspot Cons: not meant to be ""authentic chinese food"" (probably stating the obvious to my fellow Native LA folks) more

Big Fan 11/30/2006

Mr. Chow is one of my favorite places to dine. Many complain about the price but fine dining means $$. When dining at Mr. Chow 's you have to understand and take in his concept. When you walk into his restaurant the first thing you will notice is the artworks from Keith Haring and Helmut Newton. Don't ask for a menu because the staff will pick out the right dishes. You'll be dining away on fine silverware (all the silverware are engraved with Mr. Chow) and crockery and be sipping on the finest champagne. Imagine how much this man spends to have that fine dining experience for all his clients. The food is amazing! Its authentic Beijing cuisine with a mix of cantonese. As you can tell I'm a huge fan! This restaurant is so impressive and a great way to impress clients if you're a regular there! You feel like V.I.P! Maybe thats why the celebs just pack this place every night. You feel like you're at a one huge party everytime you enter (well at least I do). I should get a free meal for this advertising. I love this place! Pros: V.I.P treatment and real fine dining experience Cons: Pricey more
