Unreal Chinese food... but not bad 6/24/2003

This is the most interesting Chinese food I've ever had. Eating your rice with forks and knives, drinking water with wine glasses, I reallyd had a good experience. The food is really not bad, it's just I wouldn't call categorize it as Chinese food. However, the place and the people in it are worth a look. Just make sure you bring enough cash or a working credit card. Pros: dessert available, good service, cool decor Cons: over priced more

Fast Food for the Elite 3/12/2003

Mr. Chow has a good thing going for him. People come to spend $100/person on fried leftovers. Basically Mr. Chow takes anything he finds around the kitchen, deep fries it, and calls it cuisine. The elevated fast food experience begins when your waiter tells YOU what you are going to eat (we were on his bad side from the start by asking for a menu), then they lay on the lies by telling you how delicious everything is that you have ordered. I couldn't even stomache the food (deep fried scallions = fast food onion rings). Desserts aren't even home made as we saw them returning them to their original boxes at the end of the night. Save your money b/c if you're looking for Mr. Chow cuisine, you can get a year's worth at a drive thru. Pros: Good people watching, Hollywood experience Cons: Disgusting food, Snotty Staff, Long Waits more

Table for six please 3/3/2003

I went to Mr. Chows for a business dinner - I found it exciting that I saw stars (Arquette and Val Kilmer among them) sitting right next to me. The food was o.k - the ambience, well if you like sitting in dark corners- so tight that going to the bathroom was more of a nuisance to everyone including the table next to me. And to end our dinner, they gave us the wrong bill which was $295 - I thought, jeez that was expensive chinese food - but the waiter came back and told us he gave us the wrong bill and handed us a new bill for $467 - I was flabbergasted! I had to pay $467 plus $98 for the tip. I'm still trying to reach the restaurant to find out if the tip was already included - they usually are in a party of 6. Pros: Great service, dine with stars Cons: extremely expensive, tables too close, it's just chinese foo more

Might as well hand over your wallet! 9/3/2002

For what averaged out to $75 per person (and we didn't have ANY drinks), we were served an array of lackluster appetizers and entrees -- fried pork/shrimp dumplings; lettuce wraps (I still have a problem paying for iceberg); noodles with some unidentifiable substance resembling dog food; scallion tart; phlegmy-textured Dover sole; beef with asparagus (okay, the asparagus WAS very fresh); spicy battered shrimp; and pigeon (which looked and tasted like something you'd be forced to eat for an immunity challenge on ""Survivor VII: Marooned in Central Park""). The service was tag-team style, and included our snotty waiter and a team of underlings who mumbled the names of each dish as they placed it on the table. Don't waste your time or money at Mr. Chow. You'll get better food and see celebrities if you buy a ""People Magazine"" and go to Panda Express! Pros: clearly labelled exit, cloth napkins, good asparagus Cons: EXPENSIVE, mediocre food, bad service more

  • In Short
Hot spots cool fast, but Mr. Chow has held the eternal flame of see-and-be-seen dining since 1973. The decor is stark and modern, and the vibe is clubby and buzzing with energy....
