Wasn't sure what to expect 2/7/2012

We tried the Restaurant Week lunch menu. \r \r The dressing for the shrimp salad appetizer was too sour after eating the whole salad. The other appetizer we had was the black truffle and fontina cheese pizza, it was a generous size and was very tasty. \r \r The roasted chicken entree was a thick slice of breast and came out over done. The organic turkey burger was about the size of a slider, a bit underwhelming. It was the fries that filled me up. \r \r The molten chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream wasn't bad. The pineapple upside down cake with basil ice cream was more interesting. The basil flavor was powerful and unexpected in an ice cream. However, the flavor was very strong and might not appeal to some.\r \r We were seated downstairs and it felt like being in a cave. I think for lunch, sitting upstairs at street level might have been preferable. We would've been able to see our food better. more

Me like 7/23/2010

Came here for the first time and fell in love with the downstairs - just a very cool spot to drink and eat. It wasn't too loud and you weren't sitting on top of the tables next to you. It was Restaurant Week. I ordered from that menu but my date did not. I was shocked when my wasabi tuna pizza came - it was huge! I couldn't believe given that it was a special menu. It was very tasty. Strangely, my salmon appetizer was very small. Overall though, the service was unbelievable - attentive yet not overbearing. I don't know about the other reviewers, but everyone was nice, we were seating promptly with a reservation, the ambiance was great and the food was fresh and delish. Definitely want to go back. Pros: Ambiance, food, service Cons: Interesting portions more

Do not waste your time and spend money! 6/16/2010

It was the worst place where I spent more than $200! Mediocre food, unfair prices and average service. more

OK Atmosphere, Average Food 6/6/2010

I agree with the other reviewers, the food was just average and the atmosphere was fun, but would not be great for good conversation or a romantic evening. The downstairs has no windows, and the bar looks cool, and the glassed-in staircase gives everyone in the place something to look at, but still, its a basement. Not that special. The food and drink: the steamed shrimp salad was ok, with too much dressing; not outstanding like another reviewer said. The duck breast and confit was again OK, but not outstanding like you would expect from this place's prices. The cheeseburger was good, but for a nice place I would rather have a brioche than a supermarket bun that is too small for the patty. French fries were nice and crispy but plain. Mint cucumber martini was very good, if a little sweet. Nothing on the dessert menu was inspiring so we didn't have anything. The service was fine. A little slow and a little informal, but nice and willing to help. more

Casual Urban Swank 6/1/2010

My family and I went for dinner and I was very pleased. The food was fantastic and I swear the steak my sister ordered must have been marinated for months. It was so juicy and flavorful. I recommend the pea soup for amazing fresh flavor, if you love peas, as I do. Also the duck was very tasty, but put the fresh herbs, rice, and duck together for a perfect bite. I don't think the waitress was as attentive as she could have been, but our glasses were always full. One thing I was displeased with was the seating arrangement. Maybe we were just sat at an abnormally small table, but for three people it was a little cramped and the lighting was a but too dark for my taste. All in all, it was very fresh, very relaxed, and very New York. more

Beautiful setting, disappointing food 4/9/2010

I went to Mercer Kitchen with a friend and was positively surprised when we entered the restaurant. It is a beautiful setting, very trendy and yet very warm. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up too the exceptations. The food was, overall, not so good. I had the squid first, my friend the tomatosoup, and you would think that it's not that hard to do that right, and yet it just wasn't that good. Then we had the salmon, and the roast chicken, and the salmon was okay, the chicken was okay, but the mashed potatoes were really salty, the vegetables were hard, it just wasn't good enought. The staff was friendly, but not that friendly, and overall, it was disappointing. There are worse restaurants out there, definitely, but this surely isn't one of the best either. more

Crap service, nice iced cappuccino 4/8/2010

I don't know why the staff at this place are allowed to get away with their unhelpful and miserably slack attitude. My sister wants me to post this particular review. She's visiting from London, we went in this afternoon for iced cappuccinos and a cookie plate to revive jetlagged little boys on a hot afternoon. Everything had to be asked for several times, the cookies followed half an hour after the coffees - which our waiter seemed to not understand were wanted at the same time....no one was one bit pleasant. No one asked my sister if she was OK when she fell down at the top of their stupidly wrong-treaded stair - she shoulda sued 'em. Pah!! That's it for me - I don't care how nice their coffee is!! True New York Dining 12/20/2009

I've lived in New York for about three years now and I still get excited about going to Mercer. Sure the service is a bit stuffy and oblivious, but the food and setting make up for it. Its a place where rockstars, tourists and models alike all dine together. It doesn't take its self too seriously either (not a black tie kinda place), but there's still a sublime elegance. The food is simple and delicious. I recommend the steamed shrimp salad, the cucumber martinis and for main course its a tie between the roast chicken and duck confit. Dont let those other reviews get you down, if you're in New York dine with New Yorkers in style at Mercer. more

Poor Management + Reservations 11/21/2009

The previous posts regarding poor management and reservation policy are not isolated events. Our party of four arrived promptly at 8:30pm for our reservation and were asked to wait at the bar for a drink. Not unusual in New York. We were patient and accommodating to the staff, but when we asked the MD why there was such a long wait, he revealed that hotel guests have priority. Our party was bumped from our reservation twice in the span of 30 minutes as the guests of the hotel, all but flashing their black Amex cards, casually strolled in to take our place. When we pointed out that we were disappointed with the service, our hosts were stalwart to our complaints and reluctant to make us more comfortable. No free drinks or appetizers, and not even an apology! Instead, their last effort as we walked out the door was to offer us a table upstairs to continue waiting for our imaginary reservation. After 1 hour of stalling, it dawned on us that the large MK marque out front didn't stand for Mercer Kitchen, but rather Mood Killer. SoHo was a NoGo. My recommendation: Go to Lucky Strike and drown your sorrows in a pomegranate martini. Pros: Ambiance Cons: Service! more

  • The Scene
Though the fickle winds of celebrity restaurant-going have since directed A-listers to newer, more alluring spots, Jean-Georges' downtown eatery has still managed to remain a dining destination. The upstairs lounge is bright and open; the restaurant lies beneath in a large, open, brick-walled basement. Diners lounge on lavender banquettes beneath a ceiling of antique glass sidewalks.

    The Food
The Provencal-inspired cuisine takes a more minimal route than in Vongerichten's other kitchens, but the clarity and brightness of flavor still inspires. Yellowtail tuna carpaccio, lightly dressed with a hint of mint, sings of summer, and crab salad partnered with sweet-hot mango mustard and greens hits all the right flavor notes. Entrees, across the board, are quite good. And dessert--especially a stellar version of the ubiquitous molten chocolate cake--shouldn't be missed.
