Our friends recommended the place. We had a good time. I found the menu simple and not very expensive by NY standards. Food and Service was good. I would go back there again. more

Sensational food on tiny tables in dark room 3/30/2003

This is one of those places I'd like to remodel since I adore the food, particularly the wasabi pizza (something I had to be urged to order) and everything that followed, but the table was just slightly bigger than our plates and I worried that things would fall off. It's a strange setting - in the basement of the Mercer Hotel. Could not be hipper, could not be darker, hostesses could not be thinner. Food could not be better. So I'll return, but I'd like to bring a flashlight. It's not cheap, but it's worth it. Dinner can come up to $90 apiece but you'll love the food. I'm less sure about the decor. more

What's wrong with Jean George??? 3/6/2003

Well, the place had a hip atmosphere, typical for Valentine's Day. Seemed nice at first sight. The food was decent; but the Chef is an asshole, just the way he treated his cooks, I heard a guy complaining that he wasnt getting paid his hours, then he started cursing and yelling; come on it's an open kitchen for god's sake he shouldn't be doing that at all. I know its not directly related to the food, but I cannot patron a place where the employees are not treated well. more

Valentine Massacre 2/16/2003

Not good, not bad... just plain jane, run of the mill. but at the price and the hype, you expect sooo much more! Service is just OK and the food is a bit less... Save the $$ and try something else, especially for a special night out. Pros: trendy, romantic Cons: pricey, food is not so good, service is just OK more

Looks like it could be a trendy waste of time; IS a fun, special experience 1/29/2003

The flattering, pretty, skylit SoHo basement is as welcoming and cushy as can be. A view of the kitchen is invigorating. The decor is tasteful, at once rough-hewn and soothing. When I saw our waiter I thought, Uh-oh, he looks like he should be on the cover of i-D Magazine, not IDing today's specials -- wonder what this is gonna be like. But he turned out to be smart and gracious as well as drop-dead gorgeous. And we were both wearing jean jackets! I went there with my Midwestern parents for brunch. My dad, a European-born chef, found the place completely unpretentious yet stylish and the food ambitious *and* satisfying. I had a quince sorbet-and- crumble for dessert which I still remember. Even the HOSTESSES are good here. That's really saying something. Nota bene for night owls: Wednesdays at subMercer (attached bar/lounge) there's a very hot DJ night. Good luck getting in if you aren't well-connected or on Page 6. more

Trendy yes awful not. 1/24/2003

Been to the Mercer a few times and honestly, the food is good despite its trendy vibe. I absolutely agree with other posts that you get very little food for the price but the food is good. Remember you are also paying for the name. I love the decor but would not recommend sitting in the communal tables unless its a very big group, much more fun getting a table and people watch while you chomp on your $20 palm sized truffle pizza. Not the scene it used to be so if its a scene you want go somewhere else. Pros: food, decor more

A Trendy Place with Decent Food 1/23/2003

I was there 1-22-2002. The restaurant was a little loud. The service was attentive. (I've noticed other comments to the contrary) I liked the fact that there was room to move around your tables, atypical for a NYC restaurant. The food was tasty, although as said below the portions were small, so it might not be the best value for the $$. I had the steak which was good (for a steak covered in sauce) but it was a very small size. I would have called it a petit strip. I was with a business group, so I never saw the bill. This place forces bottled water on you, I doubt it was free. Anyone know if they charge for this? If so, they didn't present it that way, and that's always something that stinks of getting taken advantage of. Like being forced to pay for bread. Pros: nice architecture, Open Kitchen (Downsta Cons: small portions more

Worth a Look 11/21/2002

Mercer Kitchen is nothing out of the ordinary. It's a great space with amazing light. However, the food is only so-so. The crowd was pretty mixed. So, it's not that trendy anymore. YUM! 11/18/2002

Finally came to Mercer Kitchen after all these years and we were not disappointed. Creative, seasonally-inspired menu and prices lower than we expected. Delicious appetizers and entrees, our server recommended a wonderful bottle of wine, and we couldn't resist dessert. Service was attentive and knowledgeable. The restaurant itself is sleek and striking...very cool to sit under the sidewalk and watch the shadows loom overhead, and the dim lighting makes the beautiful crowd look even more sexy. Pros: great food, sexy ambience, unique decor more

HELL! Kitchen 11/3/2002

Truly one of the worse experiences in my three years in NYC. Saw our waiter once. They forgot to serve some drinks and the entree of one person in the party (who ended up getting it twice after everyone had finished). A complete disaster of a meal, who just got everyone worked up and anxious to finish our 2 hour nightmare. The free champaign and desserts do not really help me to even consider going back. more

The worst service in New York 10/14/2002

The service at Mercer Kitchen was the worst I have ever had in New York. They seated my party 30 minutes late, then it took the waiter nearly 25 minutes to bring us our menus and take our drink orders. After about another 10 minutes we still had not received any bread, so one of my friends stood up and served our table bread. The bus boy came over and laughed - it was not a joke, it was pathetic. The food was edible, but that is about it. There are so many excellent restaurants in New York for the same price, please take my advice and go to another one. more

  • The Scene
Though the fickle winds of celebrity restaurant-going have since directed A-listers to newer, more alluring spots, Jean-Georges' downtown eatery has still managed to remain a dining destination. The upstairs lounge is bright and open; the restaurant lies beneath in a large, open, brick-walled basement. Diners lounge on lavender banquettes beneath a ceiling of antique glass sidewalks.

    The Food
The Provencal-inspired cuisine takes a more minimal route than in Vongerichten's other kitchens, but the clarity and brightness of flavor still inspires. Yellowtail tuna carpaccio, lightly dressed with a hint of mint, sings of summer, and crab salad partnered with sweet-hot mango mustard and greens hits all the right flavor notes. Entrees, across the board, are quite good. And dessert--especially a stellar version of the ubiquitous molten chocolate cake--shouldn't be missed.
